“Go with Huascaran Adventure Travel”

Reviewed 19 August 2013

We did an 11 day trek in the Cordillera Huayhuash with Huascaran Adventure Travel (based in Huaraz) in early July.

Before the trek Paulino, the owner, responded promptly to all our email enquiries and was very helpful. We decided to allow ourselves a week in Huaraz to recover from jet lag and to acclimatise before the trek. Paulino helped us organise acclimatisation walks and tours during the week before the trek, organising a guide/taxis for us if necessary. He also managed to find others to join the trek with us.

The Huayhaush trek was amazing. Paulino’s quote was one of the cheaper ones we received, but everything was extremely well organised, the equipment was good, and our guide Miguel and our cook/arriero Samuel looked after us very well. Miguel offered us alternative routes some days, and was always keen to take us on the most scenic route. Samuel prepared heaps of excellent food. Both were cheerful, helpful and good company.

Weatherwise we had a bit of everything - rain, hail, snow, wind and a few sunny days - so you need to make sure you have appropriate gear. It's almost all over 4000 metres, so the nights in particular are pretty chilly. Scenery was spectacular - an unforgettable trek.

We tackled the Huayhuash circuit independently, without guides or donkeys, and completed it in 8 days. You could easily spend longer doing it, with more days at each camp, which would allow you to explore the stunning scenery more thoroughly. During our trek the weather was good, which allowed the path to be easily identified, but there were local farmers who will also point the correct direction if necessary. If you have a good level of fitness and have acclimatized to the high altitude it is possible to do it by yourselves, as long as you know what it is like to carry your gear for 8 days, over numerous passes. I would definitely recommend this trek, as the scenery is amazing. There are lots of tour agencies in Huaraz who will be able to help you plan your trip and who provide guides, cooks, donkeys, and all the gear if necessary.

This is a fantastic trek, but be warned you are mostly over 4,000 meters so you need to be acclimatised to do this trip. I went with Abner and his brother Adolfo of Los Amigos de Huauhuash. http://losamigosdehuayhuash.free.fr/ and can highly recommend them, They are a family run business - no office in Huaraz - and out of the trekking season they both work on their family farm. One of their satisfied customers has set up this web-site for them and their sister responds to email bookings and inquiries It's good to know that all your money goes to the local community and to those who are doing the work. Abner guided, Adolfo was the pony man and they shared the cooking. Only had to carry a day pack each day and camp was set up when we arrived

I did a 13 day trek which allowed time for a couple of side trips up to 5,000 meter lookouts with spectacular views of the mountains. This is as close to the mountains as you can get unless you are a full fledged mountaineer. If you are after a really spectacular trek and have a reasonable level of fitness this is certainly one to consider,

The "Cordillera de Huayhuash" trekking is known as one of the most spectacular trekkings in the world. All the time you will enjoy views at immense rock formations, glaciers and a lot of beautiful colored lakes. You can organize your trip for your own, according to your current physical condition, resistance to high altitude, etc.Ask to the travel agency if they can fix the trip for you. You will be miles away from civilitazion, so pls don't forget your camera, batteries, wáter filter, and medicine. Enjoy your trip!!

If you are limited on time and want to do one of the best treks in South America I can't recommend the classic 10 day Cordillera Huayhuash circuit enough.

We've just finished the trek with Sabino and Elmir from a family run company 'Huayhuash Aventuras'. These guys were brilliant, from answering questions in emails leading up to the start date, being flexible with our requirements, Sabinos cooking excellent and Elmir always being the first to campsites with donkeys to get best locations in front of the majestic mountains!!

I highly recommend Sabino as a guide/cook, for the price we were worried that we might not eat well but we ended up putting on weight over the 10 days haha. Sabino always went the extra mile to show us different viewpoints that other agencies/guides didn't know about which we loved. You can contact him by email 'huayhuash_aventura@hotmail.com' or phone '(043) 44-7185.

Tips:
* Every day you must hike over a pass, for an average-to fit person this isn't difficult.
* We paid 225 soles in total to communities along the way so remember to bring extra cash
* On the 7/8th day in Huayllapa (small village) it is possible to buy extra supplies food, batteries etc
* Bring a good sleeping bag as it gets really cold at night sleeping under the mountains
