Inevitably when you travelto Machu Picchu you travel through the Sacred Valley. In the Sacred Valley there are a number of ancient sites. One ticket is purchased allowing access to all the sites. The ancient sites have to be seen in conjunction with the Inca site at Machu Picchu in many places the sites are more extensive and in better condition. Exploring the sites can be exhausting, some of the sites involve a long walk to get to them and some of the sites are on the sides of steep hills which involve a strenuous climb. The views from the top are breathtaking and worth the effort but not for the feint hearted.

If you are in cusco don't miss out on the sacred valley, it is situated slightly lower than cusco and can help with acclimatisation. A days trip can take in a number of sights, the main one being Ollantaytambo a huge hill fortress, allow some time to look around the town too.

The valley is very green and fertile with the river running through and you can even stop off for some chicha morada (a purple corn fermented drink) on the way back to urubamba.

The scenery, history, markets, ruins and lovely people make the Sacred Valley an area that deserves at least several days to visit. I brought a group of weavers to Chinchero to weave hands-on with the local women in their tradition for three days. It was the experience of a lifetime and an cultural immersion into an ancient way of life.
