“What a romantic stay!”
Reviewed 11 December 2008

We stayed for 2 days in September 2007.

Location: Excellent. Within walking distance to all points of interest. Surrounded by shops/restaurants.

Room: We stayed in a Jr. Suite and it was gorgeous. Huge, beautifully decorated room. Bathroom was enormous as well and had a shower and jacuzzi. Extremely clean.

Front Desk: Very friendly and helpful.

Overall: Would highly recommend the Hotel San Gabriel – it was one of the nicest places we have ever stayed. Very romantic hotel so ideal for couples.

I believe previous reviews have commented on the "nothing was too much trouble" attitude at this hotel. How right this proved when the hotel owner jumped in his VW van and came out and rescued us and our bicycles from over 50 km away (along a bleak mountainous road) when we could cycle no further. The hotel is delightful and very comfortable with a lovely sitting room, free internet access and an honesty bar. All the staff have the same helpful attitude.

We stayed at the Hotel San Gabriel for several days last month and it was a great choice - easy to find (by car), great room, wonderful location, nice staff and satisfying breakfast. The San Gabriel is most certainly a small hotel but it seems more like an upscale traditional Spanish home, with a delightful ambience.

The staff, Anikka at the front desk and Jose - an owner, were great (advising us on some special rural roads and in helping resolve a credit card and rental car problems.) The price was most reasonable. We did not utilize the "movie room" and bodega but they seemed to be nice additions. There is no hotel parking but free, and safe, parking is located nearby. I could not recommend it more!

  • Liked — the overall ambience
  • Disliked — nothing - ideal for us

I would highly the San Gabriel. We stayed in a junior suite, room 22, and it was the most beautiful hotel room I've seen in a long time. The en suite is fantastic, gorgeously decorated, complete with a two-person jacuzzi bath.

The owners and staff were all very nice and friendly - a refreshing change from the other, more business-type hotels we stayed in in Andalusia.

It was a real treat staying here.

I liked that the hotel really is in the center of it all. I walked to/from the train station (it's between 1 & 1.5KM's), the hardest part of the walk being crossing the "New Bridge" (kind of a goofy name, seeing as the bridge was built in the mid to late 1700's) where you'll find plenty of tourists walking and lining the sides and making it difficult to roll a bag. Once you cross the bridge and walk up the very slight hill 2 streets, turn right and boom there's the Hotel. I was impressed with how easy it was to find.

There's a lounge in the basement, open during the late afternoons & evenings, meant for guests to socialize and share some delicious drinks (there is complimentary sherry in there, but I believe the general idea is BYOB). I never saw a single person down there during my stay.

Pluses:

A computer in a sitting room where guests can use to get on the 'net and keep in touch with friends & family. If you brought your own computer, there's ***FREE WIFI*** access, at least in the vicinity of the guest computer in the sitting room (i.e. the WiFi signal isn't strong enough to be picked up throughout the hotel; you can get the access code for the WiFi router from the reception desk).

Breakfast costs €6.50 extra per person, but with it they'll have: slices of local cheese, Museli cereal, yogurt, toast & croissants, different types of local spreads (e.g. honey, pate, tomato gazpacho which you can have by itself or put onto the bread along with some olive oil). Walk on into the breakfast room and let the staff person working in the back room know you're there (otherwise you may be waiting for a while for the table to be cleared off and your toast & juice to get delivered).

I think another review mentioned not seeing an elevator. Wrong! There is an elevator, discretely hiding behind painted doors. Very useful to get luggage between the 1st & 3rd floors.

Pros & Cons:

This is a renovated mansion (the owners still live in a part of the building) and many of the room furnishings are antiques. A chair and table in my room (room # 2) felt a little too fragile for me to sit or place things upon. This isn't the quietest hotel I've slept in: some doors squeak like crazy when being opened & closed (not very good for light sleepers). Thankfully I was able to use the aircon / heater units (found in each room) overnight to generate enough white noise to filter out the ambient sounds from outside.

The cinema room seems intimate. I never got a chance to use it.

Varying levels of friendliness, in terms of the service. The evening lady seemed somewhat brusque, but the rest of the staff seemed very welcoming and friendly to me.

Slight Negative:

My only negative experience was a maintenance problem: the shower in room 2 needed a fix up (water leaked all over the floor from a non-securing shower door).

One recommendation I'd like to offer that I should've taken advantage of: if you're going to see more than two or three of the following -- 1) the New Bridge's interior "interpretation center" 2) The Giant's House 3) Mondragon Palace 3) Arab Baths 4) Painting Museum 5) Bandit Museum -- you should get a Bono Turístico (for 8€) or a Bono Turismo (12 €) combination ticket, which will end up saving you some euros. Otherwise you'll feel like you're spending euros and not getting your money's worth. You can get a list of timetables for attractions and prices of things at <http://www.turismoderonda.es/informacion/pdf/horarios.pdf>

This hotel is just perfection at every level. It's an old house built in 1736 in a small courtyard in the old part of Ronda just 50m across the bridge.

We stayed only one night but we wish it had been a month. I've stayed in hundreds of hotels but I've never found a place with such character and warmth and with such kind staff..they were so kind and helpful in every respect.

I hope to get back to our room (10) with the pillar and arches someday, The historic room we had also had all the mod cons discreetly woven into the room's layout. Everything was spotlessly clean to the keenest eye.

Booking is personal and welcoming but also quite reassuring..you get a personal e mail from the mangement

Breakfast is 6.50 euro and wonderful and the mini bar is cheaper than going out...gotta say it's hard to leave the place.

we're definetly coming back asap

A beautiful hotel, in a beautiful small town. We booked the honeymoon suite and were not disappointing. The bathroom is exquisite - with a large jacuzzi tub.

The service did however let down the standard of the hotel. Whilst it wasn't bad, it was just surprising that it wasn't very helpful let alone warm. For example, upon arriving and asking to check in, we were just taken through the formalities of providing passport information etc. before being shown to the room. No smiles, how was your trip, information about the hotel or the vicinity - just passport please, and follow me. This experience was repeated on our check-out (by a different staff member) and also at breakfast - although I'm sure other people's experiences of this would vary considerably depending on who they dealt with. In general, the room, location and fact the service was adequate if not outstanding would lead me to recommend this hotel.

  • Liked — The room was outstanding.
  • Disliked — The service did not live up to the otherwise outstanding quality of the hotel.
