“Ronnie the Ringleader”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 October 2013

A little piece of tranquility at the end of the world......After unloading our things for a 3 night stay we looked out the window and were pleasantly surprised by a flock of sheep and a goat (Ronnie the ringleader) merrily grazing away just outside of our room...Just simply FANTASTIC! Then there was the view of the water that was also amazing....We had booked a room in the main lodge ( for price point) and were pleasantly surprised by the size and cleanliness...we were informed when we got there, that there was no coffee maker or phone in the room which was no problem. Just go to the dining room at any time to get coffee or tea etc...The staff were very delightful, open and friendly. This is a place to sit by the fire with your cup and listen to the tales, or check out the local happenings......Whale watching too.....

I have mixed feelings about Brier Island Lodge.

The place is ideally situated, on top of a cliff overlooking the Annapolis Basin close by and the Gulf of Maine in the distance.

Rooms are a good size, view is great, bed comfortable; be warned, no phone, coffee, nor fridge in the rooms, just a very small TV - but none of that matters very much.

Lodge organizes its own whale-watching cruises, which are well-run at a decent price.

Dining room offers fresh fish and seafood, however with little attention to accompaniments or presentation; the view kind of makes up for it, though, but really, they should get some beer glasses, beer served in a water glasses just isn't right. Very few selections on the menu.

Staff overall is very pleasant, casual, knowledgeable and helpful.

Property is well-maintained, and the family dog is very friendly...more so than the goats or chickens, anyway.

The biggest problem is check-in and, especially, check-out.

Painfully slow, erratic, disorganized.

Took forever to settle our bill, even though it should have been very straightforward, 2 nights, 2 whale cruises, using credit card; but they don't use a computer for check-out, so you're back in the 60's, and it takes a long time.

Worst thing is, when we returned home the next day, there was a phone message telling us that we had not paid our bill!

Ridiculous! Of course we paid our bill; had receipt to prove it; I'd never been accused of not paying my bill before this.

So I phoned, and the best the lady who answered could do was to say it wasn't her who called, and she couldn't explain what this was about, she wasn't sure, etc etc....; so I gave up and hung up, wasn't going to get an answer from this lady.

Fully expected that someone would call back the next day to explain and apologize for the error, but no, it never happened.

So all of this left a bad taste, and it could all have been fixed with a bit of competent customer service and relations. Rating would have been 4 or 5, because the place is truly beautiful, but this incident kind of ruined everything.

The Brier Island Lodge was an average hotel with friendly staff and good food in the restauraunt. We stayed overnight one night in preparation for an early morning whale watch. Nothing stellar to report, but adequate for my family's needs.

the rooms were dated and we were not given any helpful information from the reception staff, it appeared that because she didn't live there on the island, she was not interested. she also informed us tha tea and coffee were complimentary but we were charged as tea was served to us in a teapot and not a paper cup although the waitress did not inform us of this when she took our order. also I did not like the idea of the owner's dog in the dining room. anyway on the brighter side, its a wonderful location

I love the way the staff at the Lodge made me feel like I was family. They were friendly and really cared that my stay there was comfortable and enjoyable. The halibut dinner was amazing and melted in my mouth. The room and the lounge had beautiful views of the ocean. Will be back!

Let me start by saying that Brier Island is a lot farther than we anticipated. We arrived at the lodge later than expected, but this was no problem for the gracious hosts, check in was prompt. The rooms are a bit dated, and are in need of updating. However, they are well kept and very clean. The views are fantastic!!! We had breakfast the following morning and it was great too.

We went whale watching in the morning with Welcome Aboard Tours. There is a registration desk for the tour right at the hotel. They give you the passes and the directions to the boat. The boat was large and inviting, covered sitting area below and open deck on the top. I would recommend going to the top, as the views and pictures are better from there. We went a long way and at first all we saw was some Harbour Seals. The Captain, and I am so sorry I can't remember his name, then stopped the boat, and had us listen for sounds that would tell us where the whales were. You could actually hear them breach, a term I learned on the boat, and off we went, like hunters in the forest. We found them alright, 4 of them in fact, and they are absolutely enormous. Only feet from the boat, tails waving in the air, and truly remarkable.

Room Tip: If you have lots of luggage, try and get a ground floor room. There are lots of stairs to the second...
