“Great Time on the Mountain in the Summer”
Reviewed 10 August 2013

We had such a good time on top of the mountain. The drive up was beautiful. We took the chair lift right to the top that was great. At the top we walked the trails saw all the beautiful scenery from the different sides of the mountain. We saw the birds eating right out of the hands of the children. We came back down and watched the people on the bungee jump and had a look in the little store. We went to Fat Teddy's Bar and Grill to have lunch an decided to share a mushroom swiss cheese burger and soup, they both were fantastic. I would say a visit in the summer is worth the drive
It is free to look around but there is a fee for the chair lift.

“Chair lift to the top of the world”
Reviewed 10 August 2013

The views from the chair lift are incomparable. For $17.95 per adult, you save hours of sweaty backpacking and ride silently to the top of the world. Butterflies, dragonflies and tame birds abound. You can see 360 degrees of mile-high views of mountains, water, islands and lakes, all on a half-kilometer walk. Small children have to be well supervised, because the cliffs are only partially marked and VERY steep. Lovely inukshuk sculptures made from granite rocks, too. The staff on the lift is very friendly and helpful. Bathrooms, food and drink are only available at the bottom of the lift in the day lodge, so bring with you what you need. You can hike down, but the lift is sooooo much easier and quicker. Again, the views are fantastic.
The food and prices in "Fat Teddy's" restaurant are good, and they have funny stickers in the gift shop.

“Paradise Meadows ( Mount Washington, Courtenay B.C.)”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

This review is not just for those who can afford to sky at the "best' ski resort of the Pacific Northwest: Mount Washington, at a mere half hour drive from Courtenay ( Comox Valley). This review is for those who can honour the splendor of a region that, unfortunately, it is up to grabs but, thankfully, Nature here is the boss, i.e. regardless of those alpine-like condo-suburbia being built at Mount Washington, anyone can just go there - and walk, and breathe to his-her heart content without having to pay a penny - unless that one would like to ski of course ...

Paradise Meadows is the jewel of the jewels, the heart of Mount Washington. It is free. Only the Almighty is the owner...Summer, fall, spring etc what a gem of a walk. Forget about taking all those maddening walking workshops ...Just walk. There are breathtaking lakes here and there; skinny dip yourself but not in the winter of course ... Celebrate simple jewels of life. Celebrate before it all get paved out. But, at the end of the day, cemented hubris are going to be swept away ... Go, lose yourself in Mount Washington. Hitch or drive. Just go. And be thankful for it all.

“Great Views of Vancouver Island from Top of Mountain”
Reviewed 11 July 2013

We rented a beach house in Buckley Bay to be on Vancouver Island but not to be in the big city. We have been to Victoria and absolutely loved it. But this vacation we wanted to go "boring!" Sit around, relax, but still have enough to do for the week. When we got to the beach house, the owners gave us a short what to see and where to eat tour. The absolute thing they recommended was a trip o the top of Mt. Washington. During the winter, this is an alpine resort with skiing and other winter sports. Believe it or not, it really doesn't snow on Vancouver Island except in the mountains. But during the summer, the view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking we were told. So this was definitely going to be in our plans. Although the weather forecast for the entire week looked spectacular, when we woke up on Monday and there was not a cloud in the sky we decided Monday was the day to get the great views. You know how the weather forecast accuracy is, so a bird in the hand! We packed up and got into the car and drove the ocean highway road (19A) up to Courtney. Glad we did as there was a mature and an immature bald eagle just sitting on the rocks on one of the beaches up to Courtney. Got out of the car and although the immature eagle flew off, the mature bald eagle stayed and let me walk to within 100 feet without flying away! And with my 300 mm zoom, I could have checked his eyes! This was going to be a great day!

We drove through Courtney and then followed the signs to Mt. Washington Alpine Resort. Just about 15 minutes from Courtney. You went up the mountain at a pretty good grade. You know it is steep as there are stations to put on your tire chains which are mandatory during snow season. The drive up the mountain provided beautiful views. At the top, you knew it was "Off Season" as everything was closed down and the snow vehicles were all parked in neat rows. We headed for the lodge, as we could see the chairlift operating. The air was clean and brisk and the lot had a significant number of cars. We went into the lodge and purchased lift tickets for $17.50 Canadian. You know there was no way the lift tickets would have been this cheap during the skiing season!

We walked over to the lift. EVERYONE who worked at the resort was pleasant and very friendly. It seemed as if they liked working there as compared to some of the young people who did the job JUST to make money. The chair operator helped us board the chairlift and off we went. View going up the mountain was not great since all of the scenery was behind you. But we did see some VERY interesting "scenery" about half way up in some of the trees. Bras & panties and cups decorated some of the trees. Oh, to be young again! Once we got to the top and dismounted the chairlift the views were outstanding! It was truly a crystal clear day and you could see for miles and miles! Do NOT miss this opportunity to go to the top of Mt. Washington in the summer.

A few helpful hints. BRING BUG REPELLENT! The bugs will follow you the entire way. I think some of the flies were either gigantic flies or miniature birds! And WHY would there be mosquitoes at the top of the mountain? There are! Bug repellent should definitely be on your list. And lastly, bring fresh cherries or or seed to feed the birds. There are VERY friendly birds that will eat right out of your hands. You put some cherries or seeds in your hand, hold your hand out, and the birds will fly to your hand, eat or grab the food, then fly on. VERY COOL!
