This was a beautiful resort that offers you the chance to get to know the rural side of Nica. We drove from Granada (approximately 2 hours) and would only recommend doing so in the dry season and in the daylight since the roads tend to be a bit treacherous. We enjoyed the drive because it gave us the freedom to see a bit more of the country.

What I loved about this place was the owners (Bill and Casey) are very invested in making the experience delightful. Bill knows the area like the back of his hand and is a great surfing guide. You definitely want to take the opportunity to surf a day or two. As an inexperienced surfer, it was nice to have guided surf sessions in relatively small waves (February). We also incorporated some sort of side trip into most of our surf sessions which helped us to get a perspective on the surrounding area. Casey ensures that your time at Soma is smooth and relaxing - whether you want a massage, yoga, horseback riding, or just to relax. It was great to get to know them and their staff who work hard to make this a true retreat.

They have animals on-site, three dogs and two cats. I love animals and it was nice to have them around. They are super sweet and well-behaved. It's just a "good to know" for those who aren't accustomed to animals.

I would recommend at least 2 days of surfing. And definitely bring a rash guard or buy one of theirs on-site.

I wasn't impressed with yoga. For $20 it was more of a stretching session that incorporated some yoga positions. If you are any sort of yogi, this was bordering on the super, super light side of a restorative session. What I did like was that I got to travel to a cool artists ranch for the class. They also hold classes on site.

Prices are definitely American prices, as we found in most of the Nica resorts. You'll spend ~$30 per day / per person on food and there aren't many other options unless you have a car (and even then it's super limited and requires local knowledge). Massages were $60, so we passed on those since we had other opportunities in other places for less.

If you are a more experienced surfer, bring a car and have Bill / Casey direct you to the waves. Just know that Bill also has some local knowledge and relationships that can make it easier for you to have access to the beaches.

Try the Witches Kiss! It's a delicious drink!

Both Casey and Bill are amazing! You will love every minute that you are there. Their helpful staff (Eddie and Carlos) treat you like royalty. Everyday was an adventure. From waking up early to have their delicious breakfast before you venture out for an amazing surf trip. Fishing on the open seas with Caesar, who mind you won't take you back till you've caught a big one, to relaxing at their amazing resort. You make it back in the afternoon just in time to catch a spectacular lunch (steak taco sliders are a must) just to head back out and surf again with Bill and one of his best guides Maurie. After surfing in the afternoon Bill will take you to a local cantina to grab a quick bite and many many cervasas. My favorite location was Magrock where you get to hang out in the bar on the top and watch the sunset. After the sunset you come back to have another astonishing dinner and desert. You will make friends will everyone else that is there and will continue to keep in touch with them. I loved everything about Soma Surf Resort and it was hard to leave. I will definitely be returning shortly. You owe it to yourselves to make the trip. You will not be let down by Casey and Bill's charm.

Such a great destination for a relaxing trip. Casey, Bill, and the Soma staff take care of your needs, whether it be organizing surf trips to the beach, a drive to a yoga class, or a trip to Magnific Rock. The beach is close, but it is a drive. This ended up not being a problem, as it was actually nicer to relax by the pool at Soma as opposed to the beach. The beach is very hot with no sun coverage, and there are nice breezes by the pool at Soma as it is set back from the beach. For surfing, Bill had us up on our first day, and feeling more confident the next few lessons. The bungalows are very spacious - one suggestion to bring your own toiletries, though, as there aren't any provided. The food is delicious, fresh, healthy, and affordable. Overall an amazing vacation to get away and relax with little distractions. Will definitely be back again!

WONDERFUL hilltop resort a couple hours from the Managua airport in Nica. I went with a friend and both of us had never surfed before, but we got up on the board the first day thanks to Bill. We also did Yoga in the middle of the jungle which was absolutely incredible. There isn't anything around the resort...so you definitely have to be satisfied with lounging around the pool, reading books or surfing the web, eating DELICIOUS meals, and doing one or two outside activities per day (surfing, yoga, horseback riding, etc.)...but this was just what we were looking for. I can't say enough good things about the food, it was so fresh and just phenomenal. We also went to Mag Rock (a hostel on the beach with lots of young surfers around) for sunset 2 nights which was really enjoyable, as well as the hot springs which were great to relax in after a day of surfing.

The only negatives were that I do wish that there had been more variety in the beaches we visited for surfing (we went to the same one every day) but that beach was nice and deserted. We did the week long all-inclusive surf package, which was an incredible value (worth every penny), but the days did get a little repetitive toward the end. I think 4 days would be absolutely perfect at Soma. Also the electricity did go out a couple times making it pretty hot to sleep one night, but this is typical for a developing country. Soma did have generators they were able to turn on in the morning.

We also went and spent a night in Granada before our flight home (which I highly recommend instead of staying in Managua if you have an early flight). Cute little touristy city. We took a tour which included zip lining and a trip to the Volcano -- both were great.

Overall an unforgettable, incredible trip. Casey was also incredibly accommodating. We had to reschedule our trip due to a last minute issue and we were able to switch to a new week without incurring any costs.

I highly recommend a trip to Soma for new surfers. Thanks for the amazing experience Casey & Bill!

The food is outstanding, the setting beautiful and breezy and the staff as hospitable as you will find. It is a great place to go to learn or sharpen your surfing skills.
You should put them on your itinerary.

Beautiful hill top location place with nice views but not in the beach. The beach is close but you will need a car or let the people from the hotel drive you everywhere, of course there will be a charge for it.
The staff is incredible, the people that work the kitchen and do the maintenance of the hotel are very nice and hard workers.
Tasty food with different options to choose from, with descent prices. The restaurant may close early except if there is a big group coming from outside so plan on having early dinners..
There is not a TV but there are a lot of areas to just relax. The WiFi works fine in the common areas but there is no signal in the bungalows.
The bungalows have a lot of space with a great shower, they have soap pump but no conditioner so if you need any extra toiletries plan on bring them with you. The beds are very comfortable.
An interesting factor is that the wall that divides the sleeping area from the bathroom doesn't reach the ceiling.
Overall we liked the place just think that if you are trying to go for all the activities you will need a big budget, since it is not cheap to go for a surf trip.

Room Tip: Go for the bungalows if you don't mind not to have a wall that reach the ceiling.

We accidentally stumbled upon Soma Surf Resort at few weeks when planning our trip to Nicaragua over the holidays when we were looking for a few extra days at the beach with our 2 kids (13 & 10). This resort truly is an oasis. The minute we arrived we felt welcomed and relaxed. Bill & Casey are excellent hosts were super accommodating. The accommodations were stylish, comfortable and plenty big for our family of 4. The infinity pool was refreshing and had the best views, as did the veranda that was dotted with hammocks. Most of all though, we loved the community feel of Soma. We met families, couples, and singles from all over the place. There was communal dining at meals, and the food was healthy, plenty and reasonably priced. Only 1/2 of our family had surfed before, and Bill & his assistant got us up on surfboards during our stay. The beach is a short drive from Soma and expansive and empty. I can't say enough good things about Soma...I almost hate to write the review because I feel like I stumbled upon something I'd like to keep secret. I for sure will be back.
