The highlight of the visit was the opportunity to scale the scaffolding to see the massive waterproofing work in progress. The National Trust Volunteer guide who led the "tour" was excellent- lots of good info and enthusiastic. He made the day for me.

Coming to the end of a six year renovation to deal with water penetration which has dogged the castle from when it was first opened circa the early twenties. It was built for a self made millionaire by Edwin Lutyens. It sits in a very commanding position over the Teignbridge Gorge. Well worth a visit and has a separate visitor centre with tearoom and shop.

Hard hats and high viz jackets was an interesting way to start our visit. We were in a group of 10 carefully climbing up the scaffolding on stairs set into it so felt very safe.A structural engineer showed us various pictures showing how bad the roof had been before they started the restoration.Evidently this was the last castle to be built and the owner had decided to use the latest roof cladding which leaked from the start. The scaffolding is a work of art itself as it can't be attached to the listed castle. You can see builders working in the roof and outside amazing views. We then went to the outside of the castle and around the back through the rhododendrons to the crypt.A beautiful chapel in there .Finally into the castle, not a particularly friendly welcome by a lady who seemed upset we didn't want to wait for a guided tour.Other staff members extremely helpful and seemed eager to show us various unusual things.

Amazing place, National Trust, but again the same problems, guides not willing to talk and share information, would be much better if guided tour

Good car park and easy access to house grounds, contained a good range of flowering rhododendrons and magnolias.Very good views of the valley and countryside, which provided an excellent walk. The house is still undergoing building works but will be well worth the wait when finished.
