Just minutes from the A303, this is great place to stop for lunch when travelling to/from the west country. Has that old fashioned travellers inn feel, but with modern service. Good choice on the lunch menu with very helpful and friendly staff. Decent coffee as well. Plus if you have time to spare, take a walk around Stourhead Gardens, probably the finest garden in England.

from the moment we arrived with reserved parking space till the moment we signed out we had a lovely time
the room was lovely and the staff were very welcoming and friendly but not 'in your face'
we dined for two nights and the food was excellent, compliments were sent to chef about her goats cheese starter

Room Tip: there are five rooms available

We stayed for five nights in February. We were looked after beautifully and made to feel very welcome. The inn does get really busy at lunchtimes - but we simply went out for long walks and made the most of the tranquil atmosphere later in the day. Great!

Room Tip: Room 3 was very spacious. None of the rooms have a view of the Lake.

We have stayed at this Inn before for my sister's wedding and found the rooms charming and very comfortable. The location is great with the beautiful and romantic Stourhead gardens that are owned by the National Trust right on your doorstep. The staff are friendly and our food arrived without having to wait a long time. This is definitely an Inn worth visiting especially if you're looking for something a little special!

We went to the pub with friends for lunch; there were very few customers. The menu was quite limited.

The "Wild Forest Mushroom & Asparagus Wild Mushroom Risotto topped with Rocket & Parmesan Shavings served with Long Grain Rice" (£11.95) sounded good but seemed just an oversalted dollop of mushrooms in cream with no sign whatsoever of any asparagus, a small protion of rice and a sprig of parsley. It was not enjoyable.

The bilious yellow fish pie came in a dish with what might have been spinach mixed in, and strangely had sliced carrots on top. For the price we would have expected a separate dish of vegetables. Our friends reported that it was not very nice.

The ham,egg and chips (£11.50) was the best of our meals but the egg yolks were congealed. As they were presumably the only part of our meals that had to be cooked rather than just reheated, this was disappointing.

The only special offered was pheasant. There were sachets of ketchup and mayonnaise on the table, but the staff seemed too busy chatting to each other throughout our meal to offer vinegar for the chips, mustard, desserts etc.

We won't be repeating the overpriced and rather grim experience; there is an excellent nearby National Trust restaurant that serves delicious, very reasonably priced lunches.

We were delighted by what we found in the Spread Eagle when we stayed for a couple of nights on our way home from holiday in the West Country.

When we arrived the staff really went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcome and that immediately put us at our ease.

We had a lovely room above the bar and looking out into the cobbled courtyard. We had stayed in the room on a previous occasion but it had been completely refurbished since then and it was bright and fresh. The bathroom had a real 'Wow' factor.

The Spread Eagle is essentially a country inn which has retained that character because it is owned by the National Trust and is at the centre of one of the Trust's most attractive estates.

The bar is really pleasant and is full of character.

There are only about five or six tables in the restaurant but on the first evening we were told that the Chef recommended the rack of lamb which he claimed was 'awesome'. Knowing that many chefs recommend what they cannot shift, we were a tad suspicious but went for it. The Chef was right! It was awesome and some of the best lamb that we can ever remember having.

Obviously the following evening's meal was always going to be a little bit of an anticlimax but it was still a good meal.

One of the really nice touches about staying in the Spread Eagle is that guests have access to the Gardens at Stourhead after they have closed to the public in the late afternoon. They are really wonderfully as the dusk falls over the lake in one of the finest landscape gardens in England.

The Spread Eagle is a charming little inn which is fresh, inviting and still retains a great deal of character. We enjoyed our stay and will most certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Overlooking the court yard is good because the bar is seldom noisy.

We Have just returned from the most relaxing short break ever.
We took our two girls aged 12 and 14 with us and stayed in a beautiful large room .
The furnishings were very in with the age of the Inn . Immaculate room fluffy white bath towels warm and cosy chairs huge bed just divine.
I will be going again.
We walked around the stourton estate which is owed by the national trust the gardens are amazing .
The evening meal was very tasty and we sat by the open fire its a real gem of a place.
The Inn has some family games you can borrow these were great fun.
Go and visit all the rooms are lovely .

Room Tip: Room 3 is huge with a view out on to the lane a lovely window seat to people watch.
