“Disappointing afternoon tea”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

We had a very poor cream tea here after a walk round Stourhead gardens. The scones were stale but they insisted they had been baked that day, which was evidently not the case. They tasted as if they'd either come out of the freezer or a packet. It was very over-priced for what it was. We'll go to the National Trust place next time!

Great hospitality from all staff (especially Angela who saw to us). Comfortable room, excellent facilities, high level of cleanliness. We had a good night's sleep following by a delicious vegetarian breakfast. Right next to the Stourhead grounds for beautiful walks.

What a wonderful place, the inn has 5 bedrooms-we had 4 of them. The staff were all friendly and helpful, evening meal was lovely and smoked salmon/scrambled eggs breakfast was just perfect with a view from the window over Stourhead Lake bathed in sun with the Sunday Church bells ringing in the background. Very English, old fashioned bedrooms but very comfy bed, mugs and cups/saucers for tea/coffee which there was plenty of.
Only wished we had stayed two nights.

We were given a night away at this beautiful retreat in stourhead. The landscape, gardens and the architecture were fantastic. Had a lovely stay a good nights sleep, a hearty breakfast and the restaurant catered well for gluten free options. The rooms are quite dated but goes with the theme. My only negative comment about the hotel was our bin in the toilet hadn't been emptied from the previous occupants. Overall a lovely stay. we will be back!

We had walked around the lakes on a very hot day. We decided to stop at the Spread Eagle for something to eat. We ordered a class of wine and a pint of beer I asked for a glass of water and was told there was a water station outside. The water station, was a small table with plastic cups and 4 jugs of water no (no lids) The table was in the blazing sun, the water was very warm. I asked for some ice and was told that the ice bucket was empty and she couldn't go down to the cellar to get some, because she was the only one on duty and couldn't leave the bar

Room Tip: we didn't stay the night

As a place to stay overnight and have dinner, the Spread Eagle might be regarded as fairly average, but it stands out because guests are allowed free and out-of-hours access to the splendid Stourhead park just across the road. If touring in the area, it is worth staying here just for that. Our room was comfortable and spacious, furnished in the style of an Oxbridge student set circa 1970. The bathroom also had plenty of space, but was rather shabbier. Visitors might find all this either pleasingly traditional or in need of refurbishment.
The evening meal was memorable on two counts: the enormous portions served, and a very strange item on the starters menu. This involved anchovies in a muffin, coupled with a deep-fried poached egg - I ordered it out of morbid curiosity, and later wished I hadn't. It's the kind of thing that would have the MasterChef hosts shaking their heads ruefully. However, the fish dishes were good, and the breakfasts also fine.
All the staff we met were extremely pleasant and helpful. The atmosphere in the dining room and bar was a little funereal, though - it struck us as a place that would be at its best on a winter evening, with a fire going, or at lunch-time in the summer. This review is meant to be a positive one - I would encourage anyone to come here, but perhaps moderate your expectations.

This review only falls short by one star for one reason which is that the dinner menu would benfit from from some fine tuning. This menu does not always deliver what it promises and may be falling victim to a woeful trend in modern British catering which is the triumph of style over substance where quality and simplicity is eclipsed by unnecessary innovation. The general standard is excellent but dinner is badly let down by warm soggy sauteed potatoes posing as "hand cut chips" and a microwaved bread and butter pudding which was way too dense to digest despite having a good flavour. Is the Great British chip too down at heel to grace a dinner menu? If it is then I beg to differ! There also seemed to be little opportunity to have a lighter bite in the evening as not everyone wants a full blown dinner. There seemed to be some confusion as to whether the lunch menu was available in the evening, (which interestingly delivers quite excellent chips which are crisp, golden and hot), so some clarity here would be an improvement and benefit choice. We have enjoyed several superb meals at The Spreadeagle over the years,(which go way beyond the enjoyment of chips), and this is one of the reasons that we keep returning for more but simple lapses in the culinary department like this detract from what otherwise would be a faultless and excellent experience. It has to be said by way of a contrast that all the other aspects of a stay at The Spreadeagle Inn score an unequivocal five out of five; the accommodation is clean and comfortable and you would be hard pushed to find more helpful and welcoming staff anywhere. So many many thanks, and we will certainly be back for more.
