“Good meal after long walk”
Reviewed 28 February 2014 via mobile

Friendly service and fish pie very taste. Puddings wonderful but bread seemed to have seen better days. Warm fire on wet cold days always an advantage.

“Superbly efficient pub!”
Reviewed 18 February 2014

If visiting Stourhead you have to take a break at The Spreadeagle--always busy but so so efficient-food delivered quickly and well presented.
Staff are efficient, food is good-do not be put off buy the number of people in the pub, you will be served quickly. Food is very good.

“Cosy pub and comfortable room”
Reviewed 22 January 2014

Booked for my birthday by my husband, having wanted to return here since we stayed 20+ years' ago... when he asked me to marry him! Mid-week night, so we were the only guests staying and the only people dining, although there were several people using the pub itself. Our room did not seem to have changed very much in those 20 years (ie, old-fashioned charm with genuine old furniture and pictures and NOT boutique-style accommodation) but was pretty, nicely decorated, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Large bathroom with a shower that was OK... just. Dinner was good pub grub, served by charming staff. We slept well and thoroughly enjoyed the well-presented breakfast - the cooked elements were excellent, not too greasy, and there was a wide selection of fruit, cereals, jams etc. Excellent value for the price. The weather was not brilliant, but we managed a lovely walk round Stourhead gardens at dusk and then another, slightly longer yomp the next morning. Very nice to be there without all the crowds... definitely worth booking for a relatively bargain break.

“Relaxing on a cold December day”
Reviewed 12 December 2013

A building of living history on the edge of the National Trust's property Stourhead. Spread Eagle is an 18th century inn that still has original Georgian and Regency architectural features.
Pleasant staff and a simple menu with many local ingredients were a fine welcome for our lunchtime meal. Unfortunately the A4 typed menu was badly laid out and choices for Starters and Mains etc. was unclear.
After close examination I chose the Fish Pie with local Cheddar mash topping, it was just superb and deceptively filling. Others in our party had Trout Pate 'very good', Farmhouse Sausages and mash 'great' and Country Ham & Eggs from a local farm 'lovely'.
Beautiful Wiltshire countryside surroundings and Stourhead's Henry Hoare designed garden made this a lovely day out for us all - even in Winter.

“Friendly service, decent food”
Reviewed 28 November 2013 via mobile

Great for breaks if staying on or visiting the Stourhead estate. Formal dining room lacked atmosphere and was a bit chilly despite the wood burning stove. Food was nicely presented and appeared to be home made and gastro pubby, with generous portions. Would recommend this spot for both lunch and dinner. Allergies catered for too (including gluten free)
