Excellent food and top class real ales in a comfortable room with a nice coal fire in the winter. Add to this the cricket in the summer on Sundays in a pleasant quiet village with a good childrens park ( well away from the Buck) and the bonus of jazz every second Sunday lunchtime n what more can you want.. Mike the owner is well versed in real ale all from local breweries and the whole place has a nice ambiance

I first discovered the Buck when my in laws used to live in Bedale some twenty years ago.It was at that time, our Saturday night out with execllent food and beers and a nice group of regulars. My in laws since moved away from the area but I still regularly find time to travel the 140mils or so from Cheshire to spend a couple of nights at this great little pub for a great relaxing weekend.
Yes I know things have moved on in terms of decor, and yes I know I can go and stay in Harrogate with fancy wallpapers and bedspreads in a boutique hotel, but when I want to unwind in an unpretentious, quiet, out of the way place with great food and great beer, this is where I go.
My dog loves the place too (Tiger Lily the Shih Tzu) and dare I say it Ive got her on to Black Sheep !
Keep up the great work...we will keep coming back

Room Tip: Front view is good.........so is the back if you want a quieter room

My overall feeling of the Buck was that it was a complete contrast between the facilities and the restaurant.

The room was clean but small, the beds were uncomfortable and really do need new mattresses. To be woken at 06:50 on a Saturday morning by an extremely noisy pump because someone in another room turned on a tap was very unwelcome, the noise must have woken up people in number of the rooms.

Having said that the food and beer were what can only be described as wonderful and had the room been a little better and not exactly cheap, this would be the perfect place to enjoy a short stay in this most beautiful part of the country

Room Tip: Cannot comment on other rooms but ours was no- 6 small with a nice view of the garden but the beds w...

My wife and I spent five nights B&B in the Buck and we ate there in the evening. The breakfasts had everything you would expect from an English pub - and more. And the evening meals were also excellent. There was a good selection of real beers in the bar. The service was friendly and welcoming throughout. The bedroom was clean and comfortable and the selection of tea, coffee, chocolate and biscuits there was excellent. We found the Buck in the Good Pub Guide where it certainly deserves to be.

Reading the last reviewer, I feel I have to reply.

I cannot understand the obsession that some people have regarding their dogs. I, for one, am grateful that dogs are banned from the public rooms at the Buck. I cannot think of anything more disgusting, whilst enjoying a meal in the bar or the dining room, than having to watch Fido licking various parts of it's anatomy.

Yes, dogs are welcome to stay in the rooms but please don't inflict Fido on the rest of us. After all, would you be impressed if I brought my pet snake into the dining room?

As for the Innkeeper being unfriendly and unaccommodating, nothing could be further from the truth.

As the last reviewer admits to not eating or staying at the Buck, how can such a review be of any help?

quite bizarrely this pub allows dogs in the bedrooms but you are unable to go in the bar with your dog and have a meal. landlord was unfriendly and un accomodating. stayed at thornton watlass hall there is only one pub in the village so would have been nice to have eaten in there rather than have to get in the car and find a place that was dog friendly. seems quite strange that a dog friendly b&b pub does not allow dogs in the bar of an evening/lunchtime. perhaps an idea to state this on website
