We had 4 days at this beautiful place - far exceeded all expectations, and we would recommend anyone to book a holiday here. We arrived at Pisa airport, was picked up by the owner (Martin) and taken to Villa Sermolli. We was shown to a beautiful suite with private terrace and the most beautiful views ever of the garden, lemon and orange park, lilly ponds and in a secluded part of the garden was a swimming pool with loungers etc. Numerous terraces with rocking chairs surrounded by flowers. The villa itself dated back to the 16th century full of antiques, it was like going back in time. The food was to die for, breakfasts were amazing, fresh bread, fruits hams, cheeses, yoghurts, apple cake, fruit juices. Every day you had a leaflet at breakfast giving you the menu for evening meals, also giving you the weather for the day. Nothing was too much trouble..........a holiday to remember........ we will return... thank you..... Barry and Donnia Cardell.

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely here, but we had a suite with a private terrace which was wonderful.

Purchased a short break to Villa Sermolli for 4 nights 5 days September 15th-20th as a special break for my husband and I. We found this offer on ebay but good rates can be found on Villa Sermolli website, especially if like us, you want out of high season when the weather is great for sight seeing. Arrived in Pisa airport from Dublin, hired a small car and 45 minutes later with the use of our Sat-Nav (essential) we were at our destination, up in the hills of Northern Tuscany within the small hamlet of Baggiano di Castello. We were able to park in the allocated Villa Sermolli car spaces down at the bottom of the hill at the roadside - please do not park anywhere else or you will get a fine ( oops we did!! as we didn't know that if there were no road markings you couldn't park, there was sign for limited access, not obvious to us as foreigners). Our advice check with the staff in Villa Sermolli to ensure you are parked legally. You need to be able to walk up a steep incline of about 100m to the Villa residence side entrance. Once you are at the reception door you will find this has been so worthwhile. The Villa is wonderfully rustic with lots of rooms on different floors, vaulted ceilings and winding steps taking you to a breathtaking terrace and panoramic views of the surrounding hills, there are lush private gardens with lots of nooks and crannies to sit out and relax and a pretty little shaded swimming pool area with table and chairs. If you want a restful relaxing stay this is the place for you. Villa Sermolli oozes a feeling of calmness and wellbeing.

Our room 401 was situated on the third floor with views from the bedroom and bathroom over the hills of Tuscany. You need to be able to walk the stone staircase up to the differing floors, as there isn't a lift but for us this added to its charm. We had a cosy good sized room, recently refurbished in 2011 with a huge comfortable bed and rustic old stone flooring, wood beamed ceiling with ornate mirror and furnishings. There was a paddle fan to provide cool air which was more than adequate at this time of the year when the weather was in the mid 20's. The bathroom was really pretty, bijou but well thought out with a good shower, bidet , period sink and taps and a view to die for!! Fresh towels and linen offered daily if requested or for those of you like us eco friendly you can request a change or clean only as required to save energy and water ect. Villa sermolli even provided shower and hand wash.

Breakfast was offered out on the vine covered terraces, weather permitting; gentle classical music could be heard around the villa on our first morning it was really just the perfect setting. There was an abundance of fresh bread, croissants, home baked tart, fresh fruits, ham, eggs, salamis and cheeses, juice, cereals and yoghourts, served as a buffet, in a large Tuscan kitchen close to the terraces. One morning it rained and breakfast was located in the upper period dining area with vaulted ceiling, which was again a very pleasant experience, the breakfast buffet provided on a central table area.

Villa Sermolli offered evening meals if you wanted to dine in. We used this service one evening and found that the owners prided themselves in offering home cooked and locally picked produce including their own Villa Sermolli wine, limoncello, marmalade ( which you could purchase), fresh fruits and hand picked mushrooms. The food was lovely and we had excellent service. We both had a 4 course meal a pear, cheeses and a fruit marmalade starter, mushroom linguine, veal or pork fillet main with veg and a lemon drizzell home made cake. 60 euros including beer and soft drinks, we though well worth it - the setting just wonderful with twinkling lights of the terraces views over Tuscany and watching the sunset. Every evening had a different menu and we were given a menu and weather forecast every morning at our table in the form of a leaflet. Many trips could be booked from the hotel and we found that Martin the owner and Cecelia were both welcoming and helpful during our stay.

We were provided with Italian wine and beers pre-dinner on the terraces, however I think as a B&B this might not operate as an open bar throughout the day. However if you are like us we took off after breakfast and didn't arrive in until often late evening having eaten out and ready for bed!!

The local station in the town of Baggiano was 0.5km downhill and easily found. There is a great market selling local produce, clothing, leather, bags and shoes on a Tuesday morning. Tickets and train times could be obtained from Villa Sermolli reception and although we had a car a local taxi could be organised to take you down to the station. Only mad people drive in Florence so we took the rain 6.5 euros each way with trains running approx hourly we took the 10.28am train to Florence and the last "Lucca" train home at 20.38hrs taking 50 mins. You really could use the local train service to get to Pisa, Lucca,Florence and a short taxi to the Viila if pre-booked would mean you might not need to drive at all. We had an early flight back to Dublin and needed to depart at 4.30am so a car was really important and it also mean't we could explore as we wanted. So much yet to see. Montecatini terme is only 2 kms downhill and has wonderful Spa buildings, there is a "Funicular" tramline which can takes you uphill to its "Alto" area where walks bars and restaurants exist- really pretty with great views (check tram times to make sure you can get down again!! There is again a local evening market in the back streets across from its theatre- selling clothes, murano glass, leather wear. Do try and eat at "Viccolo" restaurant in main Montecatini-great food at very reasonable prices- pre-book if you can or get an early table at 7pm as we couldn't get into the restaurant at all last year.

We visited Luca, Florence ( pre-booking Uffizi Gallery tickets on line), Siena, Montecatini and had a morning at the main shopping mall outside Florence- approx 70 miles from the Villa and took just under 11/2 hrs drive but we didn't budget to spend on the high end designer ranges such as Gucci, Vivienne Westwood, Prada. We noted discounts from 30-70% with handbags at 500 euros down from 1000 euros! But for those of you looking for a designer bargain I'm sure this trip could be well worth it. There are quite a few outlets in one vicinity we saw about 5 fashion centres and all have cafes and somewhere to eat. We purchased some lovely gifts in Lucca centre at the local market- Italian leather shoes, geogeous pashmina scarves and my hubbie got a fantastic Italian suit and shirt, I bought some baggy sweat tops for my daughters in a retail chain called O.V.S-found in both Lucca and Florence. Lovely fashion wear for all the family.

Such a great trip. Tuscany is wonderful. Villa Sermolli is an Oasis when you fill your days with sight seeing or a complete chill out if you want to relax read and enjoy walk locally around the gorgeous hamlet castle and church. We would highly recommend for its charm and excellent value. Hope to return. Thank you so much Martin. Kind regards-Maureen and Martin Thompson-Northern Ireland

We did try to get into another B&B located near by just 500m across months before our wedding celebration, but the owner blew it with weird promises. So by then we found this stunning place. Once we arrived everything had been perfect.
KITCHEN, SERVICE, LOCATION, OWNER, HOST, STAFF.........

We have decided to celebrate our most special day in our life at Villa Sermolli, because of the "laid back attitude" because of the good "simple" food, because of the stunning exceptional terracce, just located above Montecatini Terme.

We are hospitality professionals, whaving worked in various 5 star Hotels like Claridges, Emirates Palace, Bayerischer Hof Munich, we are aware of unique, outstanding, intuitive and celebrated service skills.

Please consider this place to be one of the most spectacular and easy handling locations for your next "the most important day".

We loved it and will ever do.... We will be back in October 2012 for a few days... Havent booked yet, but we are sure the Host knows how to accomodate guests at any time...

All we can say.... no hesitation to book there nor attempting to just turn up.

We will be back at VillaSermolli hopefully at our next 50 anniversaries every year........

This is not a 5 star hotel, or a chain. It's a unique, charming villa, quirky and delightful, on top of a Tuscan hill. The management and staff go out of their way to be helpful and the atmosphere is friendly and lovely. We were part of a group of friends coming from various countries to celebrate a birthday and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. We were able to keep wines that we bought during wine tastings in the main kitchen fridge and enjoy them on the terrace or during dinner. The restaurant within walking distance was excellent and again, friendly and lovely.

There are shortcomings - there's a steep hill to walk up to reception. We parked at the nearby restaurant and had a gentle saunter along the back road to avoid it. The room lighting is subtle and not ideal for face painting. Our laundry took a couple of days but we didn't need or ask for it to be done quickly.

This is a good venue for a group holiday, providing a mix of self catering and full service. The view from the rooms and terraces are beautiful. The breakfast is ver good. Just don't go expecting a 5 star hotel.

We booked through Booking.com in Villa Sermolli and got nice letter back confirming
2 adjacent rooms – essential for being on hand for my 87 year old mother in law as we were taking on her short annual holiday.

When we arrived the reception said one of the rooms had been “sold” and so we were offered a second room – overlooking the restaurant – and above the kitchen.
This meant my wife had to lodge with my mother in law and I was on my own.
Holiday ruined for all 3 of us .
With an 87 year old lady you can’t kick up a fuss and set off for unamed alternative hotels .
It would have been to stressing for her and she was very very tired.

From there the unimpressive sory of Villa Sirmolli continued.
Wifi almost non existent with a very weak signal . Noisy plumbing from rooms above. Broken washbasin tap. Broken lights. Normal plug in hair dryer right above sink ( a real danger hazard) .
Lots of small details out of place which I wouldn’t have expected.
No aircon, which in August, in Italy, is a real challenge!
The shower was a notable exception . Large, modern, faultless.

No phones in the room . Very scarse Hotel information indeed.
The pool is very very small and in 50% shade until 17.00 when it loses most of the sun altogether. Only 2 seats and 1 sunbed . So it was a total non –starter.
And we had booked mainly for the pool.
Don’t expect a posh restaurant. Half the outside tables are standing on soil.
The kitchen and the kitchen staff were very noisy indeed.

To get to the reception you have to leave your car by the roadside parking area and climb a steep little street on foot for 100 meters. Sometime the roadside parking is full.
If there is a function at the hotel ( most wednesdays it seems ) you could end up walking 300 meters, as we did, to park the car on the more distant roadside.
140 euro local police fine if you leave your car near the reception area.
So the hotel is VERY bad news for elderly guests.

You can hear the Lucca –Pistoia railway very clearly and if you dont like Church bells through the night this is not the place for you. Every hour gets rung twice by 2 competing loud bells .
The whole place has a strange unkempt feel about it . A bit like a student’s house.
Rception suggested we might have breakfast on an upper terrace long table .
But it was thick with dust .
Apart from the reception , I didn’t find the staff very friendly by Italian standards.

Then came Wednesday night . A huge birthday fuction which took over all the common areas of the hotel. This meant you were in your room ( hot non aircon ) – or you just had to go out for the evening . The function finished around 2 am . Lots of major crashing about from the kitchen just below my room.

Generally the crisis has meant that most Italian hotels are trying very very hard to please.
I found Villa Sermolli an exception.
This may be the last holiday my mother in law may have .
A real shame the hotel didn’t honour its written booking agreements.
Its not what you expert in 2012.

BEWARE when using villa Sermolli for planning your wedding, we found this place on owners direct website in March this year 2011 and booked for a weeks self catering for 30 poeple in Aug 2012 for our wedding, and arranged to visit for 2 nights stay this Aug 2011 to discuss details. From our many emails with the owner all sounded ok he said he would organise and cater for the wedding and help with the paperwork for the ceremony. On arrival of our visit to talk through arrangements he said he would prefer to rent it as a BB not self catering (something to do with experience of english weddings and beer!) and we said we could not afford the price for BB which was approx double the self catering price we had booked, and he had never mentioned this in any of our emails. He said that as we had booked that would be ok as long as we didnt use the main kitchen, but became very non committal on all other details regarding the wedding, apart from the catering for the wedding day which he said would be 75 euros per person. He appeared very un-organised he didnt even know we were staying for 2 nights even though I had the confirmation email with me. We offered to pay the deposit but he said to pay in January. On our return he sent a short email saying that because he had bad experiences of self catering he was cancelling our booking!! Judging us on the behaviour of other English wedding bookings evidentally! We tried to phone to ask why he didnt tell us that before our visit of which he charged us over 500 euros along with the expense of wasted flights and other accommodation, or why he didnt tell us whilst there so that we could have looked for an alternative venue in our last few days in Italy. He finally sent an email with no reason for either. We have had our wedding ruined by the owner of this villa, which I find un business like and extremely cruel. So if you want to be sure of your big day going ahead DO NOT BOOK IT HERE. We certainly will never forget or forgive this callous behaviour and are now back to square one finding a alternative venue within 10 months. J & M Hants England

we stay in Villa Sermiony almost a week during our Tuscany trip. Actually we planned to spend there only one night, but just cannot leave this amazing place. Gorgeous view, incredible garden, very-very kind and hospitable atmosphere. Very quite place, there are a lot of space in home and in the garden, when you can be alone or with your company... The real food and wine from owner... what you can wish more from the heart of tuscany...
