“Quite a unique experience, with a great well-kept lodge.”
Reviewed 22 March 2009

This lodge is extremely well maintained. They put a lot of effort into maintain the grounds, the trails, the facilities and the rooms. The house (Casa Teca) was very clean and maintained. The views of the garden were decent. The area probably had all four-monkey types, I only saw the white faced and spider and heard the Howler. They had Macaws and Toucans viewing was good but to high for pictures. The guide (Phillip) was very good he does a bird walk, forest welcoming, canopy tours and night walks and all are fantastic. He is definitely a one man asset to the lodge. The lodge was quite pricey and everything you do is an extra charge so it was fairly expensive but overall a great place. This lodge has many trails to walk and could keep you busy for a few days if you did them all. Getting to the beach was a little difficult as it required at least an hour walk/hike. - Not a good place for children.

It's hard to remember how many times we've been to BDC..I think this was either #8 or # 9. As has always been the case it was a glorious time. The weather was perfect for animal sightings and we saw plenty. This trip was my first sighting of a sloth and an anteater. Both were amazing. I also found a Little Hermit hummingbird nest and sat and was able to see the mother feeding the tiny babies. Fortunately I had the camera ready and "got it" on film. Then there was a hawk spreading it's feathers on the roof of the restaurant to dry them - another amazing sight. And the Great Curassow was very interesting to see.

One night we were fortunate enough to get to listen to a "big cat" conservationist talking about how they are trying to expand the territory of the big cats. She was very knowledgeable and makes you understand how everything in the rainforests affect us all.

We went horseback riding one day and that was fun..Another day we went down the Pacific Trail to the waterfall. We had been before to the waterfall...but never IN it. What a great way to cool off...It was a cold massage!!! Felt really good and then we were ready to head back UP the trail. We didn't get to the tidal pools this trip...saving that for next time (hopefully in August)

Each time we go to Costa Rica we travel to other spots, but we always come back to Bosque del Cabo...The people are so friendly and helpful, the food delicious and plentiful and the wildlife is always everywhere...I would advise you to take a hike with one of the guides. Philip is an excellent guide and knows ALL about the rainforest. He never misses a thing and makes sure you see it too...and Carlos is an excellent birder. I'll never understand how he can spot a tiny bird way up in the tree and then find it in the telescope!!! Amazing!!

Thanks to Kim and Phil (and everyone working there) for truly making BDC unforgettable. We'll definitely be back!

We spent 4 nights in Bosque earlier this month and discovered paradise! it truly was the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica and we can understand why so many guests return. Our cabin was private and set beautifully, overlooking the ocean, very romantic. We spent hours relaxing in our front porch, observing macaus, monkeys, coaties... The trails surrounding the resort are very well maintained, you can wander around on your own or take part in guided tours if you like. The food was amazing, organic, plentiful, best coffee ever (available all day long, with afternoon cookies...) and best Pina Colada! the staff are excellent, very friendly and knowledgeable. Everything is done for you to relax and forget everything. We loved the wildlife, the forest & the beach. Yes it is pricey but this truly was Pura Vida!

Recently, we returned for 10 days to Bosque del Cabo for our 7th visit and were as delighted and impressed as the first time we stumbled upon this gem in the rainforest in 1995. Since then, it has evolved from a rustic nature camp to an upscale lodge but the emphasis remains focused on offering exceptional opportunities for viewing the rich diversity of wildlife found on the Osa Peninsula. Four species of monkeys and hundreds of tropical birds, including the rare scarlet macaw, are among the many highlights. Amazingly, these amusing and dazzling creatures are a daily feature of the experience at Bosque and are surprisingly easy to observe along the well-maintained system of trails -- or often right from the porch of your comfortable cabina! The owners, Phil and Kim Spier, are usually on the premises and keenly involved with guests in matching their interests to the range of available activities. They are active in community conservation efforts and research projects on the Osa Peninsula, including a landmark study of the behavior of big cats that are found here -- jaguar, puma and ocelot. Even if you don't encounter these elusive predators, you'll gain a profound appreciation for the forest habitat that supports their survival. With warm hospitality and attention to detail, Phil and Kim offer a winning combination of well-designed accommodations, friendly ambiance, and excellent cuisine in a breathtakingly beautiful setting with abundant and amazing wildlife. We are passionate travelers and have visited many far-reaching parts of the planet, but our consistently superb experiences at Bosque del Cabo keep us coming back again and again and again.

My wife and I have been to Costa Rica 3 times. This was absolutely the best trip of all. If you like wildlife and birds, you will love this resort in the jungle. Our room with a porch, was located on the cliff, overlooking the Pacific from 500 ft. above. Spectacular view!! Monkeys and Toucans in the trees outside our room. All the rooms are very nice.
The Owners truly understand the importance of clientele service and providing great meals from their on site chefs. From the time you arrive at the property, you will be greeted with a smile and great hospitality from all the personnel. Upon leaving the property after 5 days without TVs and cell phones, we were sooo relaxed. Looking in the rear view mirror as we headed to the airport, we were already looking forward to a return trip. We would recommend this hotel for anyone who likes nature, privacy and relaxation. jerry and connie smith

For those that have never been to Bosque Del Cabo, all the glowing reviews on tripadviser may seem unbelievable. However, they are all true. Bosque Del Cabo is paradise for nature lovers.

Our first visit was February 07 but our latest visit in February 09 was even better. The wildlife was everywhere. We were out dawn to 10PM hiking the trails and taking pictures. Our bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian list is too long to include.

Coatis, Agoutis and Toucans were more plentiful this trip and dozens could be seen everyday around the lodge grounds. We even spotted more rare wildlife like sloth, tamandua, peccaries, and some snakes (non-venomous). We only spotted Squirrel Monkeys one day, but consistently saw Spider, Howler, and Capuchin Monkeys daily.

Is there a down side? Not in my opinion, but you need to be aware of a few details:
- The 40+ minute car ride from Puerto Jimenez is bumpy. But, on this ride was saw Scarlet Macaws, Caracara, a Two-toed sloth, egrets, owls and more.
- You may have "critters" in your cabina. We had geckos, some bats (only trace was some poop on the floor that was easily picked up), and some insects. None of these critters will bother you and they add personality to the cabina in our opinion
- You still need to have bug spray on the hikes although biting insects were few and far between around the lodge itself

I have more pictures and a trip report on my website FocusedOnNature.com if you are interested.

If you are looking for a great rainforest experience with wildlife, great food, and excellent service, your search is over. Book a trip to Bosque Del Cabo and prepare to be in heaven.

After 3 nights in the Arenal area we we're more than ready for a warm tropical climate. Amazingly while we were checking out at the Lost Iguana Lodge the receptionist told my wife she had a phone call. Cringing, as we thought it might be some ill news from the homefront, it wasn't, it was Jose from the office at Bosque Del Cabo telling us that our flight to Puerto Jimenez was being diverted to Golfito and we would need to catch a taxi to the pier and then take a water taxi to Puerto Jiminez. Nobody from Nature Air in La Fortuna or San Jose seemed to know about this change. When we landed at the tiny airstrip in Golfito it was magical! The sun was setting and it was Warm and exotic! Even the short taxi ride through Golfito was surreal. Many colorful interesting people everywhere. Once at the pier the adventure continued waving off the taxi boat pirates. We waited for another group of folks (we didn't know) to gather and then cautiously boarded what seemed like a reasonable boat enough for crossing the gulf. The ride was sweet (they even black bagged everybody's luggage as it looked liked rain). At the pier in Puerto Jiminez my wife gave Trino our Bosque driver a big hug in relief. After a quick tour of town we made that wild ride in the dark. When we finally arrived at Bosque Del Cabo we were just "blown away". How could this be? We just couldn't believe the beauty!. We had arrived 10 minutes before the 7pm dinner call. The food, the staff and the guests made a marvaleous first impression. It just kept getting better. We stayed for 6 nights. Too short but long enough to relax and flow with the nature surrounding us. Loved our cabina. Wildlife galore. 3 fabulous meals a day and trails you must hike in between. Everyday! The staff and owners are the best! They treat each other as family and made us feel like part of their family too. Thank you Kim and Phil + staff for preserving this oasis on our precious planet. We loved our visit and can't wait to return.

  • Liked — The people, location, nature and the food!
  • Disliked — a softer mattress would be good
