“Breath-taking property in Costa Rica”

We loved our stay at this romantic property near the beautiful Matapalo beach. The house is exactly what we hoped for with panoramic views of the rainforest and the sound of the ocean in the distance. We wanted an adventure vacation with our two boys, so the idea of a Swiss Family Robinson tree house appealed to us. Casa Vida Verde surpassed our expectations and the kids loved the hammocks and the pool. We had a very active week with hikes up to waterfalls, a boat trip to an animal sanctuary and a gruelling tree climb! After each of these excursions it was heavenly to return to Casa Vida Verde and cool off in the pool. Carlos and Sianne looked after us very well and we found everyone very friendly. Don't miss Pizza Mailit in Puerto Jimenez if you're looking for a break from peas and beans!

We absolutely LOVED our stay at Casa Vida Verde. We enjoyed the 4-wheel drive road into Cabo Matapalo where the home is located, as we find the challenge of 4-wheeling a fun adventure. (The road definitely gives you the feeling of being off the beaten path!) And we found the home to be absolutely beautiful and very well designed. The mosquito nets over the beds were all in very good condition; very clean, though we didn’t end up needing them because there were so few bugs.

The small 2-section pool (with a lovely little water-fall flowing between the 2 sections) was a very relaxing and beautiful area to hang out, perfect for cooling off, and safe for my 7-yr old daughter to practice her underwater swimming skills (there is no deep end). She also made friends with the caretakers’ two lovely children (girl and a boy, both a few years older than my daughter) and they spent hours together playing in the pool and poolside. There were quality shades over sections of the pool, in addition to shaded areas on the poolside patio, so you could always have shade or sun depending on your preference.

We actually had internet at the house! (I did not expect this, being in the middle of the rainforest). It came in handy, though I had not planned on using internet during my stay.

The caretaker (Carlos) was extremely friendly and helpful! He (or his wife) was always available whenever we needed anything, and there was no mistaking his passion for making guests at the house feel very comfortable and safe. He was extremely attentive and of course very knowledgeable about the area, plants, animals, etc… (even the stars!) and he helped us plan any activity we wanted at affordable prices with the best, most appropriate guides! We really appreciated his (and his family’s) presence on the property. THANK YOU CARLOS!!!! You helped make our stay better than we could have imagined.

I’d also like to thank and recommend Irma as our personal chef, Robby for horseback riding (down the Piro river and through the rainforest to the beach with fresh water pools and a short hike to a beautiful waterfall), Michael as a Rainforest and birding tour-guide, and Charlie for zip-lining and mangrove kayaking (osadreamstours on FB).

“Excellent for Multi-Generation Experiences”

We found this spot, on the south coast of the Osa Peninsula, just great for our three-generation family vacation. The small but beautiful swimming pool kept our 7-year-old occupied (sometimes with the caretaker's children) for hours at a time; the late-teens were perhaps most charmed by their surfing lesson on one of three beaches (all within walking distance, but better for surfing than swimming, at least during our stay); the older generations loved identifying (surprising numbers of) birds, monkeys, frogs, iguanas, small mammals, etc.; and _everyone_ loved the home, which is beautiful, a 5-10 minute walk from the nearest beach, and exceptionally well laid out for large-group living in the tropics.

The home's design is as graceful as I've seen for providing shade, allowing airflow and hearing the sound of the surf, not to mention the chorus of howler monkeys, frogs and birds that announce every dawn. The railings and staircases are lovely curvilinear shapes, and the garden walls remind one of the buttress roots on many of the largest trees in the rainforest, such as the Ficus. The three bedrooms--one of which has two bunk beds and two single beds--provided ample sleeping space for the 9 of us, and every bed had a canopy-style net, though I preferred not to use mine because we had few insects (due to the unusually dry weather, I'm sure).

I thought some of our kids might sleep in the hammocks, but instead, that gazebo-like extra room was used (amply, during the waking hours) for reading, socializing and listening to the rainforest. The entire arrangement provides nice separation between sleeping quarters while offering large, comfortable common areas for dining and conversation. Despite primary reliance on electricity from solar panels we found the lighting adequate for reading and playing games after dark.

Our booking contact--Roberto, at Osa Tropical--was helpful with every possible detail, and we found the caretaker and his wife, Carlos and Sianne, completely charming as well as attentive. We were given good contacts/guides for horseback riding, surf lessons, nature/birding walks, zip-lining and kayaking (in the mangroves), and we got clear directions for two waterfall walks we undertook on our own. Carlos' excellent familiarity with the local wildlife, by sight or sound, might have been anticipated, but I was completely surprised by his conversance with astronomy. We experienced this one clear night via his laser pointer (various constellations, including the southern cross!) and his telescope (the beehive-cluster nebula and the rings/moons of saturn).

Referring to a compass embedded as a mosaic (!) in the tile of a patio floor, and using his laser pointer, Carlos also showed how the ecliptic (the plane in which all planets rotate about the sun) and the milky way (the visible manifestation of our galaxy) relate to Earth's axis of rotation. It was a fun evening!

The 45-minute drive between Casa Vida Verde and Puerto Jimenez (the nearest commercial airport) was a bit rough--requiring 4-wheel drive to be engaged a few times--and might have been an issue if we hadn't found so much satisfaction in and near Cabo Matapalo, where the home is located. The large chest-style refrigerator held provisions for a week, and Roberto (at Osa Tropical) made arrangements for Irma to shop and cook (evening meals) for us, so our 7 days were simultaneously relaxing, intimate and adventurous.

Paradise were the first words out of our mouths. The house is absolutely incredible. You feel like you are right next to nature with all the comforts of home. We saw monkeys in the trees around the house daily, toucans and macaws. It was a short hike to the beach and the trails were great for exploring. Carlos, the caretaker, was very friendly and helpful. It is definitely a bit of work to get there, but definitely worth it. I would recommend a massage by the pool from Saene, Carlos's wife - it was a treat. It was hard to leave after only a week. We will be back.

What a beautiful place! You really feel like you're in a treehouse. The pool isn't big, but it is perfect for cooling off and relaxing. The whole house was spotless with brand new netting on the beds. The caretaker was very nice and spoke perfect English. This is a birdwatcher's paradise. And Monkeys... We saw a dozen howlers and spider monkeys - from the deck! (Different days, of course.) The best part is you are in the jungle, a short walk to the beach, and you still have flush toilets and a shower! I was in heaven.

“Nature-enthusiast's 'Tree House'”
Reviewed 7 March 2012 for a stay in March 2012

My daughter and I just returned from our weeks stay at Casa Vida Verde where we had a relaxing, nature-filled vacation. We have traveled and stayed in
houses around the globe and this house rates at the very top! I believe that when one
travels, one should experience the ambiance of ones surroundings and not necessarily the amenities that a house provides. Yes, it’s nice to have the conveniences of running water, toilets, stoves, refrigeration, etc…..but, these things are trivial when offered the experience of being surrounded by the sounds and the beauty of nature. If you are a nature enthusiast, you will adore this house. Inside or out, it feels as if you are living amongst the animals/insects as it might have been if you’d originally discovered and settled in this area. Granted, one can walk 20 minutes to a local restaurant and/or call a taxi; plus, the house has
all the amenities that one would need and it is, indeed, a very comfortable house. You would be missing the point if you didn’t just relax and discover what the surroundings of this
location/house have to offer.

We were so grateful to have met and to have had Sianne, Carlos, their 2 children and
their sweet dog living next to us in case we needed anything, had any questions or encountered any problems. They were always there and willing to do anything to make our stay comfortable. Sia gave me one of the most relaxing outdoor massages I’ve ever had.

After our daily hikes (it was an easy walk to the fabulous beaches that were often deserted), it was refreshing to come back to the house and relax in the pools of cool water and enjoy the birds soaring overhead, watch the lizards crawling around and wait for the daily arrival of the monkeys that would swing by in the canopy surrounding the house. The beds were extremely comfortable and the netting kept out anything that might have wanted to nibble on us at night. We had everything we needed for cooking our meals and because we travel lightly, weren't in need of a washer/dryer.

We were sad when we left, but so very glad that we had the opportunity to experience a week living in an extremely wonderful ‘tree house’!

“Stunning!”

I was lucky enough to stay at Casa Vida Verde recently with my family and I have to say it was amazing! This house is not for those of you who want a resort stay (ie. indoors with the airconditioner on while you look out the window at the landscape). This place is for those travellers who actually ENJOY traveling and experiencing new places and new things.

The house is amazing in every way. Its open design gives a real chance to experience Costa Rica for all the amazing sights and sounds it offers. I have a big family, yet there was plenty of room for everyone to relax whether it be in the living room or down by the pool, or even in our shaded hammock area. The yoga platform (for those who don't do yoga) provides a beautiful view of the surrounding area. The beach is beautiful and only steps away. The house runs on solar power, which I think is amazing and wish more places didn't cave to the pressure of destroying the environment for other people's convenience.

The wildlife around the house was amazing and we saw monkeys everyday we were there. I just can't get over how amazing the house was and how beautiful the scenery. So glad we stayed and so glad I got to experience the sleeping in netting surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. Just amazing!!
