“It was Exactly What We Had Hoped For”
Reviewed 4 August 2011

Casa Bambu is one of 4 rental houses in the Matapalo region of Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula. In order to experience all that Costa Rica has to offer, you really need to spend time on the Osa Peninsula. In 2005 we spent time in Puerto Jimenez. This time we wanted to be a little further off the grid. (Casa Bambu is essentially on the beach, has solar power, and is open to the outdoors.) Casa Bambu certainly did not disappoint. Monkeys and Macaws galore - exactly what we had hoped for. And, as promised, not very buggy at all. The set-up on the beds should set the standard for rentals in Costa Rica. The mosquito netting surrounds the bed on a frame, rather than just hang above the bed, so it is out of the way. The light and fan are inside the net, which is very smart and makes for a very comfortable night's sleep. The girls' who work for the owners can be hired to cook using whatever groceries you have. Their cooking was fabulous and they were so kind to do our laundry. They cleaned the house on our 3rd day and it was pristine. The beach was a bit rocky when we were there, so a bit tough for boogie boarding, but I understand the beach conditions are constantly changing. The surf was fairly slow compared to the more populated areas of the Nicoya Peninsula, which was perfect for learning and helps contribute to the laid-back atmosphere of the area. Almost any walk in any direction from the house leads to sightings of howler monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, agoutis, and all kinds of birds.

We all miss the Osa and it's people and wildlife. The boys miss the surf. I miss having Dennis drive us around and teach us about the area. We loved the boat trip and we all 5 adored Carol and Hannah at the Sanctuary. We hope to make it back to Casa Bambu in the not-too-distant future.

We spent 3 nights in Lynn's wonderful Casa Bambu. The house is very cool and the grounds are full of flora and fauna. The monkeys would swing by, the blue butterfly, macaws... and the ocean right off the front yard. A bit of heaven. If it wasn't so far away from Seattle I would be back in a minute. Lynn, KIrk and William are welcoming and warm. Great resources for total newbies to the area. We felt very well taken care of.

Our group consisted of my husband and I - and our 4 children ranging in age from 7 - 16. I wasn't sure what to expect and was even surprised with myself for booking this vacation. In the past, I haven't been much of an outdoor person. Casa Linda and the Osa Peninsula has converted me. I loved every last second and hated to leave.

Lyn's information on the website and through email communications was spot on. We didn't encounter any surprises -- except for everything far exceeding our expectations. There were activities to occupy all the different interests of our group - whether it was lounging on the beach, fishing, hiking, surfing, etc.... We tried to take advantage of as much as we could. The house was very comfortable. The ceiling fans and bed fans were more than adequate for comfort. If you are a coffee drinker --- make sure you pick up some coffee at the market and use the tico coffee pot in the kitchen. It was the best we've ever had!

We stayed at the end of June. Though we were in the Green season, we booked it at a time where typically the rain is lighter. We only had one afternoon of rains. The bugs/mosquitos were never an issue.

William, Leda, and Vicki were wonderful and always available for any need that we had. I highly recommend the waterfall hike with William. Very memorable! The dolphin tour that Lyn arranged for us was also an unforgettable experience. This was by far the best vacation our family has been on ---- and we will return.

We stayed just shy of a week in mid-July and the Osa was spectacular and Casa Linda was all we expected and more. The stilted bamboo house was spacious, cool, and very well laid out. We were about 50 meters from the beach where we had 6-8' swells on a right point break and rarely had to share a wave. The birds and wildlife were everywhere since most of the plants and forest are native. Flocks of Lapa (Scarlet Macaw) flew by regularly and we spotted lots of toucans and other birds in the forest canopy.
Lyn and Kirk ( the owers) were around and were very helpful and informative. Lyn's web info is accurate and helpful as you really need to bring everything you need with you since Pto Jimenez is a hard, 45 minute drive IF the rivers are low enough to cross during the "green" season. We had lots of rain during our stay but it didn't prevent us from doing everything we intended. Amazingly only 4 mosquito bites amongst 4 people in days so Lyn was correct that bugs weren't a problem. The solar power was more than adequate for ceiling fans and reading lights late into the night. I've been going to CR regularly since the early '70s, averaging 2 trips a year for most of the past 15 years and this Osa trip was one of the highlights. The accomodations, the caretaker William, and the owners contributed to this grand experience. Remember, however, going to this part of Osa you are sort of off the grid, so be realistic in your expectations.

Am a bit ambivalent about letting the secret out, but feel grateful to Lyn, William and others for the special experience that is Casa Bambu. It's very difficult to get off the beaten path these days, but Casa Bambu placed us square in the middle of one of the most special places in the world. Monkeys and macaws were regulars in our yard. The beach was a child explorer's dream. We will never forget sleeping under the summer thunderstorms and fishing from the beach at high tide. We hope to be back.

We can not say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay at Casa Pina. It was even better than the web site depicted. We woke early to the sounds of the howler monkeys and then set out to explore - taking long walks, kayaking, swimming and more. Most afternoons were spent relaxing on the beach or on the stunning porch. We saw countless monkeys (and other animals) from the porch - all without a single bug bite! Our stay at this beautiful house was both exciting and relaxing! It is the best of both worlds - a true "rain forest experience" with all of the comforts of a nice home.

Lyn and Kirk, the owners, were extremely helpful with so many details and it was wonderful to have Lyn's advise before (and during) our trip. We are already trying to decide how we can go back next year! This is a very special place and the memories we made will stay with us forever. I am so grateful we found Casa Pina and this beautiful part of the world!

We stayed at Casa Pina from June 13-19th. It was wonderful. The description online and through emails was Lyn was spot on, so we knew just what to expect and it was exactly the kind of experience & location we were looking for.

We spent every morning doing something fun & adventurous, and every afternoon lying in a hammock in the open air porch reading, listening to the sounds of the jungle (and the rain), and watching monkeys travel across the yard. It was, for us, the perfect blend of relaxation and aventure.

We chose the location because it offered both beach & ocean experience and the jungle experience, and we enjoyed both. The dolphin tour which Lyn set up for us was WONDERFUL, and WELL worth the money. It was a fun boat ride, a trip to an animal sanctuary (where we pet a howlery monkey), snorkeling in a reef, a trip through the mangroves, AND a dolphin tour, where we were able to plane-board (SO MUCH FUN) and my husband was able to get right into the pod of 300 dolphins and swim with them. A meal at a quaint but tasty restaurant (Delphines) a short walk from the pier completed the day.

It was great having Lyn on site as our Spanish is terrible and William doesn't speek much English. However, William was very friendly and accomodating - he drove us out to a Canopy Tour which allowed us to see some of the country-side (and meet his parents!), and took us on a waterfall hike. Even in Spanish, he was able to explain things we were seeing in a way we could understand.

We enjoyed an excellent lunch at Lapa Rios, a 10-15 minute hike up a steep hill. We also really enjoyed Buena Esperanza (Martinas) on Friday night - a small menu, but delicious food, local artisans, and a fun atmosphere. All of the locals gather there - mostly hippy & surfer Americans who live in the area and some native Costa Ricans - all in all, a great crowd.

The local Costa Ricans are extremely friendly and seem very happy living in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Thanks for everything. We will never forget our honeymoon on the Osa. We'd LOVE to come back some day.
