if you are looking for a place to get away from everything but not put yourself through an overly rustic experience that borders on extreme effort, go down to visit lyn and kirk's swiss family robinson styled houses at the southern tip of the osa peninsula. they will help you plan a perfect trip from travel advice to logistical assistance. the houses are all gorgeous and hand made by kirk and william the caretaker. each has its own special character. we stayed in la pina, which has a lovely framed view of the ocean (which less than a 5 minute stroll down a path), avocado and banana trees ripe for your picking, and the titular pineapple plants in a broad lawn behind the house. listen to the sounds of the night insects, the roar of the howler monkey, the crashing of the waves, and wind in the trees, you will never find anything else like it. truly a perfect get-away.

thanks kirk and lyn!

The week at La Sonrisa was the perfect family vacation before our children leave the nest. No worries, no distractions in this tropical paradise. The jungle called to explore the trails and waterfalls and the Corcovado National Park was amazing in its diversity. The only reason to get out of the warm Gulf water was to eat or drink. Otherwise it was swim and surf and bask in the sun and the beauty of the jungle shoreline. Every accomodationof information and help was provided beforehand to make this as smooth as possible and it absolutely was! The most hassle free and relaxing vacation any one could have in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Go there!!

This March, my family rented "La Sonrisa" (one of 4 bamboo houses connected with Casa Bambu) for a week. The three generations of family -- my parents, my husband and I, and our three children -- all loved it. While technically, the house is a vacation rental, the expereince is a cross between a rental house and a resort stay. The house itself was all we could have hoped for: simple, open, immaculately clean, a well-supplied kitchen, and incredibly comfortable beds.

But the people connected with the house made the experience soar beyond our expectations: Lyn La Cava is incredibly organized and helpful, sending useful information beforehand to ensure we were well-prepared for the minor challenges of staying in a remote part of Costa Rica. She had great suggestions for and helped arrange day excursions (also run by fantastic people!). Once at the house, the caretakers, William and Elice, made us feel so special. There were even charming little floral arrangements in all of the rooms when we arrived. And we were invited to stop by a shed on the property to help ourselves to freshly picked bananas en route to the beach. Elice and another lovely woman, Leah, cooked us dinner on two nights and the food was delicious. William took us on two guided hikes and he was kind, knowledgeable, and patient.

The area itself is spectacular and worth the trouble to visit. And the Casa Bambu houses are in a wonderful location -- right on or a 2-minute walk to the beach. They have chairs and boogie boards and kayaks available. The houses have beautiful natural landscaping with fruit trees, gorgeous flowers and the scent of ylang ylang is everywhere. And because the houses are right in the rainforest, there is so much wildlife to enjoy right from the outdoor sitting room -- monkeys, macaws, and (extremely friendly) coatimundis among other things.

Ranging in age from 4 to 68, every one of us had only great things to say about our stay, and we all look forward to a return visit.

La Pina was the perfect vacation home for my hustand and I. On this, our second trip to Costa Rica, we wanted to just sit back and relax and enjoy the beauty of the Osa Peninsula, and of course, I was really hoping to see some of the rainforest wildlife.
To my delight, we not only saw much of the rainforest wildlife, but we saw it from the hammock on our living room balcony. We saw four types of monkeys in the fruit tree right in our yard. They visited us daily. We also had a couple of Agouti (It think that is what they are called) and a white-nosed coati who scampered around the yard each morning. We had a resident iguana who climbed high into the trees in the back yard and a couple of Toucans that visited every couple of days. We couldn't have asked for more.
La Pina is a roomy, comfortable and well equipped bamboo house. My husband and I just loved how it was so open. It was everything that the website said it would be and much more. Although there are other houses in the area, it is secluded by the yard of beautiful flora and fruit trees. We also had a view of the ocean from our balcony. La Pina is the perfect place for those who love adventure and the outdoors.
As remote as La Pina and the Osa Peninsula are, there were plenty of activities to choose from if you like to keep busy, or you could just sit back and relax like we did, and take in the wonderment of this amazing PARADISE!

Our family stayed in Casa Linda twice in 2 years and plan to go back again this year. My kids are teenagers. We have traveled to many amazing places and this is the only place we have ever visited twice.
The jungle and/or the ocean immediately pull you in and you find yourself waking with the sunrise and falling asleep shortly after sunset. The hiking is incredible, the beach is amazing, or you can sit in the hammock and see 4 types of monkeys, macaws, toucans, lizards and geckos on any given day. There is something new to experience everyday.
The houses are adequately appointed and beautiful. The staff is supportive, but never intrusive in true Costa Rican style. The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms are big, the ceilings are high, and because the house is elevated bugs in the house are not much of an issue.
I recommend taking the excursion to the Animal Conservatory as you will learn alot about the animals you have the opportunity to see in the wild everyday and get up close and personal with some of them. On the last trip we saw a sea snake sea turtles, and dolphins just getting to the Conservatory.
This vacation style is not for everyone, but for those of us that enjoy getting off the beaten path, waking up with nothing planned to the sound of Macaws, falling asleep with an empty brain and the sound of the ocean, and creating our own adventure this is one of the most accesible places to remember how to live in the moment, laugh out loud, play hard, and sleep like a baby.

My husband and I truly enjoyed our bamboo home. We stayed at La Pina. Everything was perfect !!! Not a problem with bugs even. The Scarlet Macaws are so beautiful. The roosted in a tree in front of the house. And so many monkeys. I'm disabled and had no problem getting around in the house. My husband helped with the stairs.

We stayed in Costa Rica a total of 3 weeks and saw pretty much the entire country. Osa is our favorite. The restaurants are good in the area. We hit them all. You'll love all the homes if you love everything mother natures has. We have backpacked a lot in the near past around Mt. Rainier in WA. state. As we like the natural jungle/woods.

How cool to come home and tell friends you spent a week in a jungle on a remote beach in Costa Rica. Becky and I are entering our sixtieth year and we wanted to do something memorable.. We took our three daughters and their husbands and lived like the Swiss Family Robinson at Casa Bambu. Weather was fabulous. The house was roomy and comfortable and adaptable to weather and time of day--wide open to the jungle or closed up and private. William, the caretaker, taught us how to catch dinner out of the ocean by surf fishing, which we did. He took us on an amazing wildlife photo hike through the famous Corcovado National Park. We had four kinds of monkeys all around us in the trees. Plus three toed sloths and anteaters and scarlet macaws and toucans. Casa Bambu is superior to the swank Lapa Rios up on the hill. We went up there to eat breakfast and lunch and have happy hour, but far preferred living right on the beach at Casa Bambu.
