We have just come back from a lovely week at the Galley Bay. We stayed in a premier beachfront villa, ground floor no 17. It was lovely to step off our terrace onto the sand and then a few meters to the sea. The 2 other categories of beachfront rooms ( superior and delux ) are actually closer to the shoreline than our room was, but appear to be quite a bit smaller. There are a lot of trees between the rooms and the shore, and sometimes this made it difficult to find a spot in the sun! Be very wary of the sea. For the first 2 days it was very calm and lovely for a swim, but later in the week the waves got quite large and the red flag was up. One day we swam on a day that the waves were not too big and yellow flag was out, even so we got knocked off our feet and I really hurt my neck tumbling around..... so be very careful!
We found the service at times quite slow, esp breakfast in the Seagrape. Also we felt that some off the staff were not that friendly and a little bit surly, no smiles and just 'going through the motions'.
We ate twice in Ismays, but did not really feel that the food was much better than elsewhere in the resort. It is a more polished service, with an amuse bouche, and mid course sorbet. Our favourite was the Gauguin, esp at lunchtime, and I am surprised that more people did not seem to venture down that end of the beach in the middle of the day. Also really enjoyed the lunchtime snacks at the Barefoot grill, the only place for lunch if you did not want to loose an hour of sunbathing! Overall we thought that the food was very good, and drink choice great, especially the cocktails. Be aware that if you want a drink you have to make your way to the central area at the Tipi bar to get it yourselves. There is no beach service and a limited poolside service. This would be quite annoying if you were staying in a room at either extreme of the beach. Worth a look at the map of the resort on the website and being specific which room you want to be in when you book.
We took a sailing trip with Captain Sean on his sailing boat. He can be found most days on the beach or though guest services. The trip lasted 4 hours to a reef for snorkelling, which was really good, with a light lunch and lots of strong run punch! This was one of the best things we did and thoroughly recommend. It was $110 pp.
The hotel provide a shuttle to St Johns each morning, which we didn't do, at about $20 pp, and on a Sunday night to Shirley Heights for about $44 ( see my separate review on this!). We Also hired a car for a day. Driving was easy and really enjoyed exploring the island. Also did extreme circumnavigation day trip with Adventure Antigua, which was great. Although we did quite a bit, the resort we found very relaxing, great that no kids around, enjoyed that it was not blingy and low key, and came home very rested.

Room Tip: Premium beachfront for lots of space and huge bathroom. I would head for right hand side of the resort ( as looking out to sea) as left hand end beach rockier and also further to walk to central amenities, bar etc

This was our second visit to Galley Bay, which we visited last year but this year, we took our children and their partners all of whom are adults. This resort is extremely relaxing and offers a great holiday, lovely food and beautiful surroundings and 95% of the staff are happy smiley people. This year a new manager Chris had joined the staff and he is a great addition with boundless enthusiasm and a good eye for making sure things happen correctly. Rather disappointingly one member of staff who was there last year, was extremely surly and rude this year. I was very embarrassed by one of the comments he made about the nationality of one of our party and this alone would stop us from going back to Galley Bay again.

Room Tip: Book direct it's much cheaper

We stayed at the Galley Bay resort from April 17 to April 24 2014 and really enjoyed our stay. We had a deluxe beachfront room on the second floor which had amazing sunset and beach views. We loved how close our room was to the beach and all of the facilities. It is very relaxing and secluded. Most of the time we felt as though we had the entire beach to ourselves. Dinner at Gauguin restaurant is a must - the setting is beautiful and the food is delicious. The staff are amazing and tend to your every need; especially Janice, Everton, Natasha and Chris (the manager).

Room Tip: A deluxe beachfront room is sufficient for any couple and the second story has wonderful views from the balcony.

Our week at Galley Bay is sadly coming to an end. What a great resort! Great location on Antigua, tremendous service and terrific food. Adults only makes this a great get away for newlyweds or couples and small groups that enjoy being in an intimate setting. Well worth it!

Our recent stay at Galley bay was our 9th and although we had not visited for 5 years we were greeted as if we had only been away for a few weeks. From the moment you enter the property until the inevitable departure you are treated with the utmost courtesy and respect. The improvements to the resort are welcomed and have not detracted from the peace and quiet that most guests seem to go for. The food standard is exceptionally high in all restaurants and the "fine dining experience" at Ismays is certainly worth the supplement.
This was the first time we stayed in a Gaugin cottage and can thoroughly recommend this grade of accommodation. The addition a few years ago of the private splash pool to the cottages has been a great asset.
We are already counting down the days to our next visit.

Room Tip: For peace and quite go for a Gaugin cottage.
