Hurricane Earl hit on our 5th day there, but it was over within 24 hours. Luckily we saw the resort and island before all the damage. GB took very good care of its guest during the category 2 hurricane. We'll never forget this vacation, for sure!
I spent many hours on Trip Advisor before we went to GB. Most of the things people wrote about GB are true, but here's what we thought...
LOCATION was great as far as close to the airport and town.
FOOD was just ok. Not bad, not great. The best meal we had was at Ishmay's. Too bad we had to pay extra for it.
ROOMS were nice. We stayed in a Superior Beachfront room. They were perfect! We also stayed 2 nights in the Premium Suites because of Hurricane Earl...they were "safer" rooms because they were further away from the water. They were almost too big. Who needs that much room on an island/beach vacation? If we were to go back, we'd split our time between the Superior Beachfront rooms and the cottages. We got a tour of a cottage and loved them. They are so different. The benefit of having any waterfront room, however, is that you get a set of lounge chairs just for you, right outside your room. With a cottage, you have to share beach chairs with other rooms. The beach is public, but everyone has their own space in front of their room which could make it awkward for those not staying in a waterfront room. We had "guests" take our lounge chairs one day and camp out literally in front of our room! We practically had to say excuse me to them to get past them and into our room! Awkward!
GROUNDS were gorgeous. Beautiful flowers and tropical plants everywhere! We wished the lagoon path was labeled with the names of flowers, birds, etc.
ATMOSPHERE was extremely laid back. The bad thing about that was that the manager did not allow music at the tiki bar or anywhere during the day! It was completely quiet! Island music would have been perfect. Many people complained about this same thing while we were there. The nightly entertainment was all the music we got! (Thank goodness it was good!)
POOL was pretty and very warm.
BEACH was pretty rough. The undertow was was pretty bad. It was hard to get out of the water without being pulled back in! There were large swells every day. The waves kicked up as Earl got closer and they were quite big. The beach at GB was described as a surfers beach in the guide book found at the front desk! That says it all! We were disappointed because we couldn't snorkle. But it was an amazing view!
STAFF were pleasant and helpful. Some more than others.
OTHER: We thought the buffet food should have been labeled. We don't have food allergies, but lots of people do. We are just picky eaters and like to know what stuff is instead of hunting someone down to ask. How hard would it be to prepare a label for each dish, just to be safe?

Would we go back to GB? Only if we won a free trip! Otherwise, we'd prefer to explore new islands and resorts.

From the welcome at the entrance with a cold beverage from the mini bar at the front desk, to to the goodbye and come back soon when you are leaving. The Galley Bay resort is the best resort out of the islands that I have traveled through out the Caribbean. The rooms immaculate, plenty of room and we could walk a few yards and be sitting on the beautiful sands looking at the unbelievable turquoise waters. The service impeccable, a genuine pleasure the staff has taking care of there guest. The signature drinks and daily specials at the bar could very easily keep you from moving from the stool but don't fret you can take them with you. If the beach is not your fancy move over to the beautiful pool area with its on water fall. With a array of activities with in the resort from kayaking, wind sailing to a tennis match you can be busy everyday with something new. After along day of enjoying paradise it is time to relax and enjoy the sunset on the deck of the Sea Grape Restaurant. With three amazing restaurants to dine from you will enjoy Five Star menus and service. The food with it's original blends of authentic Antiguan and international flavors, makes enough never enough. Now one of my favorite experiences..THE SPA...enter a utopic environment, enjoy the open huts that sit admidst the trees with the sound of the wind softly singing in a harmonious tune with the native birds and at the same time in total seclusion, (they also offer air conditioned rooms). The spa attendants are absolutely amazing, the soothing rhythms of these hands are sure to take you to a little slice of heaven on earth. Now behind every good resort is a amazing leader and by the smiles and joyful attitudes of the staff, you can definitely see he has created something special. Mr. Lane takes a very hands on approach in his pearl he possesses, making sure that all is running correctly and making sure everyone is experiencing what they came for and I will have to say it was accomplished with me and my wife as well as all the other couples we sat and spoke with. Meeting Mr. Lane personally, his property reflex the man. When you plan a get a way to the islands make sure to make your first choice the Galley Bay in Antigua and have a specialty drink from Natashia for me. Cheers and best regards, Daniel and Nuria Huff.

We decided to return to Galley Bay after spending 2 weeks there in August 2008, we made a big mistake last year by going elsewhere and just had to return this year. We were not disappointed in any way in fact the food has improved and we had the most blissful time. As we have visited Antigua a few times, we didn't feel the need to leave the hotel until it was time to return home. I know that sounds awful but we have very busy lives and just wanted to chill out and recharge our batteries and Galley Bay certainly gave us that. We were warmly greeted like family when we arrived and shown to our room which was beautiful. We unpacked and just drifted into the relaxation and peace of the resort. There were many members of Staff who remembered us and made us feel special. The returning guests dinner was delicious and Cedric a delightful host. We mentioned that we missed Roti being available on the menu but the next day, as if by magic we had Roti! We ate at all the restaurants on site and can only give our compliments to the Chefs and Staff who made our meals a delicious and enjoyable experience. James Lane the Manager is very helpful and is interested in everything all the guests have to say and their recommendations. It is very hard to improve on a well run resort but helpful ideas are taken on board. All the staff are friendly and helpful, once you get to know them they have a laugh and joke with you..... Kerry, Natasha, Sadi to name but three are amazing but there are many more who deserve a mention. The maintenance and grounds staff, the Chambermaids and Laundry Staff all the people behind the scenes are marvellous and they all pull together to make Galley Bay and wonderful place. We will definitely return again. If you want loud entertainment go somewhere else but if you want a happy chilled-out relaxing holiday with Caribbean music most evenings then this is the place for you. We hope to return in 2011 and have in mind a couple of rocking chairs on the decking waiting for us with a chilled glass of Rose wine.

We stayed at Galley Bay for our honeymoon in the last week in August (it is the hottest most humid time to go I'm told, and being 6 months pregnant didn't help!) It is an amazing resort with a beautiful, private tranquil beach, a short walk along the beach brings you to a small cove with a large villa on the cliff belonging to Georgio Armani, this is obviously the area to holiday!
The staff at Galley Bay are very friendly and attentive to your every need, from the porters to the manager everyone gets involved and it has a real personal family friendly feel (despite there being no kids of course!) Saying this staff are never intrusive, their just laid back and appear very happy to be working there, great staff moral!
The choice of food in the restaurants is excellent, as is the service. We never got bored of the menu and enjoyed trying out all the different dishes on offer, your wine glass is never left empty and the dining views of the beach and sea is just beautiful.
We stayed in a sea view suite, and chose the upstairs suite for more privacy and higher view. The suite itself could not be faulted, the bed is immense as is the bathroom, and cleaning services were excellent.
I used the spa on several occasions and would highly recommend the body/back massages and reflexology. the staff are professional and the massage huts are tranquil and cool.
On the last few days we experienced hurricane Earl! It didn't hit us hard but the staff took care of each and every guest, moving all guests to the sea view suites for added safety, handing out lanterns incase of power failure, providing transport around the resort as and when required, they managed to continue with breakfast, lunch and tea and all hands where on deck, we where served dinner and drinks from the manager due to staff shortages and at the time it was a reassuring fun place to be dwelling! The hurricane did cause damage to the resort in the way of fallen tree's etc and a very thorough clean up was underway once hurricane Earl had passed. Unfortunatley due to 'Earl' we didn't get to see Shirley Heights and watch the sun go down. However watching the sun go down at Galley Bay was pretty awesome, sat on the deck in the rocking chairs drinking evening cocktails.
All in all we loved this place and consider it the perfect location to get away from life and live in lazy luxury. They really do do themselves proud and I thank them all for making our holiday just perfect.

We just returned from the most unforgettable vacation EVER. Memorable, not only because it was during this time that we experienced Hurricane Earl and my now-fiancé proposed to me, but moreover because this property and principally its staff and management surpass anything in my past experience. To better explain: I grew up on the small British Caribbean island of Nevis in the Lesser Antilles, and, while I had experienced Antigua in transit from Europe and had on occasion stayed at one or the other hotel on the island, I had never previously chosen Antigua as a complete travel destination. As you can imagine, I was also very biased toward Nevis and never believed that any other Caribbean island or experience could ever even come close! ☺
A few months ago I met my now-fiancé in the United States where I now reside, and we both decided to go on vacation together. I found some fantastic package deals to Antigua on CheapCaribbean.com and, after doing some research on the local resorts, my decision finally came to rest on the Galley Bay. As you can see from the other traveler reviews on this site, the Galley Bay is one of a kind.

The Galley Bay is situated on a beautiful stretch of sand about 20 minutes from St. John's, the country's capital and principal town. The view is mainly to the west. The property has lush tropical landscaping and the layout lends itself to a feeling of spaciousness rather than overcrowding.

The Galley Bay is an all-inclusive resort so naturally we were concerned about the quality of the food. In contrast to our preconceived notions, Galley Bay Resort's restaurants consistently turned out one great dish after another, to the point that we found ourselves snapping photos of our food prior to eating!

The friendly and incredibly polite staff was all down to earth people and soon became like extended family. If you take some time to speak with them you will have a great insight into island life. On the other hand, if you wish to have quiet times, the staff will gladly oblige. It's really all up to you at Galley Bay!

I wish I knew where to begin in recounting all of the incredible experiences we had on this spectacular island and this hotel in particular with its entire wonderful people. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of the staff and management at the Galley Bay (you know who you are!), and invite any and everyone reading this review to visit Antigua and the Galley Bay and experience it for yourself!
