My husband and I stayed for four nights at Puri Mas in early September 2018 to conclude our two week holiday in Indonesia. We had some apprehensions about visiting Lombok so soon after the earthquakes, especially as we knew that the hotel would have only very recently re-opened before we arrived, however, I am so glad we decided to keep our booking, as our stay at Puri Mas was without a doubt the highlight of our trip.

We were upgraded to a Jacuzzi Villa which, in addition to a refreshing plunge pool in a fully enclosed private garden outside, had a huge sunken bathtub I could swim laps in and a fantastic rainfall shower inside. Outside in the garden, there is a small shady terrace with sunbeds and a table and chairs with a full-sized water cooler and tea/coffee facilities. Should we have desired, we needn't have left our little villa at all!

This would have been a mistake though, as the exceptional grounds of the hotel are filled with fragrant gardens which made the short walk to breakfast every morning an exotic delight. With lots of shady hideaways, vibrant flowers, and unusual statues, it feels like you're staying in a private home. The pool area is quiet and offers comfortable beds and beach towels with sturdy parasols should you wish some shade. There is also a compact hotel-only beach area with an assortment of beds, covered day beds, and swings if you wish to change your view throughout the day.

The food selections at breakfast provided an assortment of Western and Indonesian options, and everything is made to order including fresh squeezed fruit juice. My favourite was the Puri Mas omelette, filled with vegetables and tofu and served with fried rice and sambal! The evening menu at the Ballroom restaurant was equally exceptional, with vegetarians and vegans easily catered for. We enjoyed a 'Rijsttafel' on our last night, which is a delicious parade of small Indonesian dishes for sharing.

All of the above praise is, of course, a tribute to the fantastic team at Puri Mas. The attention to detail is unrivalled across the board, from the clear dedication to excellence shown by all of the grounds and cleaning staff, to the personable and resilient restaurant staff (who continue to come to work despite many of them having lost their homes in the earthquake), and the GM Sara and Owner Marcel who are seen every day around the resort talking to guests. A special fluffy mention goes to the very friendly Puri Mas dogs, Sultan, Lisa, Raja, and Bomber, who were a highlight of every day as they embarked on their regular walkies on the beach.

It is abundantly clear that a lot of love and care goes into the running of the Puri Mas Resort, which eclipses any other luxury resorts we've stayed at. Chain hotels deliver excellence in a robotic, tick-box style which eventually loses impact. When every day of your stay is filled with new delights, then you know a hotel is something special.

Thank you so much, Sara, Marcel, and all of the Puri Mas team. You're a very long way away from our home in Scotland, but we can't wait to come back.

I feel I should be responding on behalf of our Puri Mas pooches who were only too delighted to stop by and get a wonderful fuss from you both every day. What a smashing review and thank you both so much. Not just for writing the review but for visiting Puri Mas.

Yes it’s true we’ve had a terrific time following the earthquake but it is over and life goes on and as you rightly said things here are just beautiful and that includes our amazing staff.

We are so proud of what we have achieved by ensuring our resort is up and running quickly and this is thanks to our owners support and our staffs hard work. It was then just down to amazing guests like yourselves having the courage to realise that Lombok needs travellers to return NOW.

Thank you both again so much. It was great chatting to you and We really hope we see you again.

Warm wishes and thanks feom is all.

Sara

This place really is the definition of a relaxing, tropical paradise.

We stayed in the Queen room with partial sea view for 7 nights as part of our honeymoon. The room was very traditional looking, clean and more than sufficiently sized with a large patio area for sitting in evening, a bedroom with a king sized 4 poster bed with mosquito nets, and a large bathroom with shower. Yes, the bathroom is technically outside, but there is a roof that covers about 70% of bathroom, and there is absolutely no privacy issues.

The staff are very friendly and genuinely keen to help where they can, and will often prompt you to ask if you would like anything. The gardens are impeccably well looked after. Yes, you may bump into a few Geckos during your stay, but the are completely harmless.

The location is outstanding, yes technically the beach isn’t directly in front of resort, but literally a 30 second walk will get you there.

My favourite memory is lying on one of the the beds watching the sunset. Incredibly romantic.

One thing to note, is Lombok isn’t as developed as Bali as a tourist hotspot. Certain areas of the island can be dirty and full of litter, but this area of Lombok is stunning and much cleaner than other areas. You will struggle I find fault with this place.

If I come back to Lombok, I will come back here.

We stayed at the Puri Mas by accident at the last minute, after having decided against it in a long trawl of hotels in Lombok, but disliking where we did stay. What a mistake we made by not booking it in the first place. The photos just don't do justice to this splendid, relaxing, beautiful hotel.

It was perfect. The staff are lovely, even when we were doing a reccy to see if we wanted to stay. The gardens are impeccable and luscious, trailing around many paths into secret sections including a stunning meditation and yoga garden. Our room (Garden view queen) had a big open bathroom and a whole huge daybed on the verandah. Inside an immaculate white king bed with voluminous mosquito net.

Lunch was great, breakfast was great, lounging in the pavilions looking out to sea an to hazy Mount Agung in the distance was great. Important point - the beach was great. We'd stayed further up the coast on the beach and found you couldn't actually swim there because of a strong current (with a rip) and very stony sea floor. The beach outside Puri Mas is a good rake, and clear easy swimming. We walked up the beach and found it was the nicest of the beachside properties on that strip. Swimming in the pool, all you see is water and sky.

One of the things that makes the Puri Mas refreshing is its age. When square box resorts go up at a rate of knots, this hotel started as a holiday home for the flamboyant champion ballroom dancing owner. So there is a sense of graciousness and history and organic development that's missing from most other Lombok properties. It felt like staying on a private estate.

We were truly impressed. The Puri Mas is enchanting, a perfect tropical paradise and we are longing to go back as soon as we can. A new favourite hotel worldwide.

Room Tip: Look at the room types on their website carefully to find one that suits as they're all quite different
