“Lovely country pub”
Reviewed 9 June 2014 via mobile

Enjoyed dinner on a Friday evening. Between the menu and the specials there was plenty of choice and everything was delicious. The service was excellent, friendly and attentive without being pushy. I'm not sure the band added much to the evening but we were about done by then anyway so didn't mind heading off.

“Excellent Pub Restaurant”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

Had a family Birthday lunch last Sunday. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

It's a nice village pub setting with pleasant garden. The service was really good & very friendly.

The food was delightful, being very tasty and well cooked - very happy to recommend thoroughly. Very good value for money.

“Fantastic pub! ”
Reviewed 26 May 2014 via mobile

I have to say that The Rising Sun is brilliant. Great food, lovely staff, relaxing atmosphere (unless it's their Millfest which is by far the best beer festival in the area!!) and it's so hard to find a decent pub nowadays. They've either shut down, are hardly ever open or have really bad service. This is by far our favourite pub and we live in Liss so we still have to drive a few miles to get to it! Love it, love it, love it!

“Great”
Reviewed 7 May 2014

Great food, great drinks, friendly smiley staff and a huge plate of food for Sunday lunch. What's not to like? Coffee is pretty good too. Highly recommended.

“Nothing special, unless you are from Milland”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

Many pubs are rated either excellent or poor and nothing in between. This is no exception. The locals like having a pub that is average or above on food. The odd person has a bad experience and cannot distinguish that from the objective view, and therefore rates as low as possible.

Neither of these views tell someone who is not from the area what they need to know:

Is the food good?
It is entry level gastropub food. It is certainly better than your average pub fare and some of the produce appears to be locally sourced. It is not hugely imaginative and it was satisfying but not the kind that would have me head back there.

Are there local ales on tap?
Not really. I was surprised to see Fuller's ales almost exclusively. There are no Sussex ales, which is a real shame.

What is the service like?
Average. There were a couple of hard-worked young girls doing their level best to serve all customers. The problem is the kitchen. Our food took quite a while to come. Service at the bar is effective enough and fairly straight-forward.

Does it have country pub charm?
No. It is a local pub in a community. It is charming in that it is clearly popular locally and has community spirit. In terms of architecture, location and layout, it could be a London suburban pub.

Will I go again?
I am afraid not. With other options in the area like the Duke of Cumberland, the Horse Guards and the Hollist Inn, I am afraid that the Rising Sun falls short.
