Secret Harbour offered a beautiful, quiet beach to spend the day snorkeling and lying on the beach. Snorkel equipment can be rented at the dive shop, but it was so great to have brought our own stuff. I recommend staying in the lower condos that are 10 steps from the sand and to utilize the kitchen to save a few bucks as the Blue Moon Cafe is a bit pricey for the food served. Condos are basic, nothing extravagant, but not much time is spent in the room anyway. Food can be purchased at a few different stores down the road, I think we went to one in Red Hook. Bring bug repellent for the "no see-ums" that attack while watching the stars on the beach. Service was wonderful, staff always willing to suggest ideas to spend the day and night. Venture to different beaches on the island and especially on St. John. Reasonable ferry price. Definitely a bonus to rent a car to check out restaurants and beaches. We are in our twenties and got engaged on the beach the first night we were there... we had an incredible stay in Secret Harbour.

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon and loved it.
PROBLEMS: It is expensive. Rates are generally a little high for lodgings which were acceptable but not spectacular. Rooms are mostly clean though sand is everywhere and mildew in bath thrives on the humidity. Restaurant is expensive, quality is inconsistent, but location is convenient. Our room had a kitchen and we usually had lunch and cooked shrimp, saving some cash. Cabs are expensive and charges vary by driver. Staff does the minimum and are competent though not especially friendly.

COMPLEMENTS: Totally relaxing. Quietest of beaches. Some of the best snorkeling on the islands by far. We saw more here in terms of marine life than we did at any of St. John's lovely, but crowded, beaches. We spent so much time in the water we were too tired to play tennis, and we love to play tennis.

CONCLUSIONS: Go here if you 1) aren't interested in shopping, 2) want some quiet, 3) want to visit St. Johns and 4) love to snorkel. Definitely family friendly, though kids might get bored.

Our family vacationed at SECRET HARBOUR the last week of August. After having read several bad reviews along with many good reviews, I figured I was rolling the dice on this one. we came up a winner big time. Our 2 daughters had never snorkeled before and this was the ideal spot for them to learn. The beach was great.
Our room was a 1 BR. with murals covering nearly all the walls. They were professionally done caribbean scenes. The furniture was very nice and the king bed very comfortable. The views from our balcony were post card material. The furniture was nice and the king bed very comfortable.
Hats off to manager Halliday and his hotel staff. The landscaping was very well maintained and the beach was groomed early everyday.
The food was good, however the staff could be a bit more outgoing. ( except Jimmy who was very friendly) ( different management).
We spent a day at Trunk Bay in St. Johns, nice beach but the snorkeling at Secret Harbour was better. We saw a barracuda just off shore from the hotel (50') We can't wait to return. DON'T BELIEVE THE BAD REVIEWS.

Since my boyfriend's and my visit in February 2004, I have been meaning to write a review about Secret Harbour. We stayed at the hotel for three days before our scheduled move to the Westin on St. John. We actually prefer smaller, boutique accommodations to the large chain hotels, so we were looking forward to Secret Harbour. We had read the reviews on TripAdvisor, and most reviews were very positive. I've never written a review about a hotel before although we both have traveled extensively, but Secret Habour warrants an exception.

We both agreed, it was one of the worst hotels that we have ever stayed at. Aware of how expensive some of the hotels in the Caribbean can be and before seeing the place, we thought that we were getting a really decent rate at $375. Honestly, paying any more than $50 is highway robbery at this place. It reminded me of a run-down, bi-level motor hotel that you see off some desolate road. The only way it would look good is if you had been driving for 24 hours straight, there was nowhere to get coffee, and it was the only hotel in the next 500 miles. We were given a corner, "oceanfront" below ground level studio right on the path to the bar and the beach. We couldn't actually see the beach because of the wall and shrubs blocking the view-not to mention we were about 3 feet below the path. The room was dark and dank. The bed sheets and comforter were ripped, felt like sandpaper and hadn't been replaced since 1985, it seemed. The towels were equally bad. The lighting was mainly fluorescent, and the mismatched furniture needed some serious updating. Each morning, we were awaken by the family upstairs as we could hear them walk back and forth above us. The kitchen was ill-equipped and the dishes dusty and dirty. The bathroom countertops were stained. We were given a large lock to the safe which didn't have anywhere attach the lock. Someone was supposed to come by and exchange the lock, but he/she never showed up.

Secret Harbour's location was really good as it was close to town and right on the water. The beach was narrow but nice and had a good snorkeling reef. The water was clear and calm, and there was plenty of marine life. A highlight was seeing turtles and a spotted eagle ray. The dive shop was convenient as well.

The staff was fairly helpful when not invisible. We ate at the Blue Moon Cafe for dinner. The prices were comparable to most fine dining restaurants in the Caribbean (for example, around $34 for rack of lamb), but the food was nothing exceptional. The busboy was really nice and actually took over the duties of the waitress. We tipped him separately because our waitress disappeared after she took our order. We didn’t mind the slow service because we were on vacation, and we were so entertained by the loud, rowdy table next to us. One man, in particular, was so drunk and offensive, but he soon fell asleep in his chair.

Although the beach was nice, we really urge anyone reading this to stay somewhere else since there are so many other hotels on the island with better accommodations and service with equally pretty views and beaches.

My family stayed at the Secret Harbor resort this July and could not have enjoyed it more. It has an attractive beach that is sheltered from the prevailing winds so it is calm when other popular beaches are choppy. The small bay off the beach has excellent snorkelling, with a reef at 6-10' on one side and a rocky point that drops to about 20' on the other. I actually saw more critters snorkeling here than on the dive trips I took: this included octopus, rays, squid, grouper and sea turtles (saw turtles every day!).
It is a suite type resort with large rooms and full kitchens, so it is perfect for people travelling with children (dining on St. Thomas is not cheap and you don't see many children's menus). There is a nice restaurant (expensive) on the premises and a beachside bar that is seems very popular with an adult, local crowd. The resort staff is pleasant, but not obsequious.
If you're looking for a full service hotel experience and a stimulating night life this is not the place. If you want a quiet place to unwind and have a little fun in the water, you won't do better on St. Thomas

Our visit to Secret Harbour was something of a disappointment. With few exceptions, the staff was unhelpful, and some were even rude. Service at the restaurant, especially at breakfast, was horrible. Requests for more water, coffee, sugar, etc., were routinely ignored, and we never got anything without asking for it at least twice. The front desk staff were very unhelpful in arranging day trips or other outings, so make sure you have a good guide book if you want insider tips or need contact information for places you want to go. Our room was ocean front and well-enough maintained, but we had not been advised that our 1-bedroom unit would have a Murphy bed. It was so uncomfortable that we could barely sleep. At least we could keep the sliding door open and listen to the sounds of the waves while we rolled around, trying desperately to get comfortable. Although the resort did not appear to be full, management said they could not move us to another unit. The beach is pretty, but quite small, and you can't really go for longer walks as it is situated in a rocky cove. There is a small reef with decent snorkeling close to shore, but when the winds are strong (especially in the winter months), the sand floating in the water really impairs visibility. The resort boasts a fitness center, but it's basically two treadmills in a dark little room near the restaurant. We never use pools when we're near the ocean anyway, but for those who do, the pool at Secret Harbour is located up on the hillside, a steep walk up from the ocean front units. The pool looks in need of a good rehab. The resort does host frequent happy hour parties with steel drum bands, which is nice. Overall, Secret Harbour isn't a disaster, but we certainly wouldn't stay there again.
