It is worth the walk up to the castle. Beautiful views and great architecture make the walk worth while..

A step back in time with all of the charm and history (but none of the beheadings). The entire town is picturesque, well preserved and should be included in any itinerary through the Czech Republic.

The town is really a cute little story book medieval village & easy to wander around (NOT easy to drive around). The Vltava river does an S curve around the centrum, w/ the castle across the river and on the hill. All is so quaint w/ plenty of cafes, restaurants, pubs, & souvenir shops.

The Castle area (2nd largest in size after Prague Castle grounds in Central Europe) is also beautiful and interesting to wander. We hit it on a nasty rainy day, so didn't see the gardens but it was still very neat. We did Castle tour #1 and the Baroque theater tour - both very worthwhile. The Theater in particular was very interesting to see how the props & such work. Be sure to reserve in advance if you want an English speaking guide & the theater can be closed at times as well, so check before you go if you have that luxury.

We wandered into an exhibit next to the hotel on Siroka (street). It was a Hall of Mirrors - a labyrinth of mirrors & clear mirrors - it was fun, would recommend. Fun photos.

We had wonderful steaks hot off the grill in front of you (ignore the chef's meaty hands pulling those steaks out of the melted butter/garlic sauce and onto the grill) at U Dobraka - yumm. The asparagus & potato pancakes were nice too. We stayed in a nice simple room across the street at Alt Straninger. 4 rooms for rent - we paid about 2,000 kc for a room (included breakfast w/ scrambled eggs, cold cuts & raw veggies - coffee or tea).

You need a full day, a week-end is better to enjoy the restaurants as well. Would definitely return and recommend to anyone if you like exploring/wandering.

We went to the castle a few times during our stay, we didnt pay to enter the castle. we just walk around the castle and garden. you can take a lot of nice photos from here..good enough, unless you want to view the castle rooms and etc. We went during the day and also the night just to get the amazing view of CK and the river..

Okay so Europe is all castles all the time and many can be a bit of a letdown. Or maybe the ol 'seen one, you've seen 'em all'. I can guarantee you, however, you have NOT seen them all until you see this castle. It's absolutely kooky and bizarre and wonderful. A lot of the "brick" work is faux brick work, it's painted to resemble a different building material. and the colors! Plus, bears hang out in the moat! A castle with bears. I can get behind that.

AND even better is there there's actually quite a bit to see, you can mostly wander around at your leisure, get some FANTASTIC views of the town and the scenery and see quite a bit of the structure if you'd like to. It's so worth a visit. I adore this castle.
