“Eggenburg Brewery”

Former Cesky Krumlov Brewery
Reviewed 21 June 2014

We were in town, and our hotel suggested a tour around the ancient brewery - about 500 years old. The tour was exceedingly cheap at about 170Kr (£5.60, $8.50) for a guided tour, tasters of the beer and a gift pack of 4 x 500ml bottles to take away). Fascinating to see how these places operate (I'm biased as I work for a small UK brewery) and great to be able to sample the products - very good too. The lemon beer is particularly recommended on a hot day. The old style cafe seems to be very good value though we didn't eat there, and the beer is superb value at about £1 per pint too. Well worth the visit

Not always working, but worth a tour through to learn more about the history of the brewery. The bear was great too.

We did the tour with the tasting samples afterwards and were glad that we did. The different beers were excellent. We did not eat in the restaurant. The tour itself was informative and you saw that standards in Czech Republic are not up to US standards. The mold on the walls and the fact that you could get so close to the equipment did make for a more interesting tour though. Nothing is actually working in the brewery so you do not get to see the beer making in action.

It was pretty interesting; we were surprised as you usually would not be able to get as up close and person with the equipment as in the US (in the US you would probably have to stand to stay a long ways away behind barriers). The young man who acted as a guide answered questions; some times there was a question that didn't receive a really good answer due to the language issues. Although I don't drink, I would suggest paying extra for the taster beers; they were of a good size.

We had an amazing tour of this working brewery in Cesky Krumlov. The site itself is quite beautiful, with the typical sgraffiti to be found throughout the complex. Our guide was an extremely knowledgable young man who ran us through the entire history of the brewery, when the buildings were constructed, the families who owned the brewery, its change of hands during communism through to present day owners. We were shown all aspects of the process and even got to watch someone cleaning the fermentation tanks. As previously mentioned the mould is very prevalent, and also the general OH&S is not up to the standards I am used to. But that's all part of the fun.
If you pay 30 extra koruna you get a couple of 'taster' beers. In fact you get an entire litre of beer! Luckily it's good beer. This place is definitely worth a visit if you're interested in breweries, mainly because you get access to all aspects of the process. A must do!
