Former Cesky Krumlov Brewery
Reviewed 17 August 2014

We did the tour in August, and were surprised to be given a heavy discount on the admission price. The reason soon became clear - the people who wrote reviews saying they couldn't believe that brewing was still going on in the old brewhouse have got their way - they have closed it down and are planning a much reduced operation with modern technology.

What we got, then, was a rather stilted tour of the old brewhouse and brewery gardens, and the sense that something has been lost - not least the jobs of many of the workers there.

The tasting beer provided was excellent and cheap - they have enough stock to supply their customers until the new facilities come onstream.

We had a small (3 person) group for the English-speaking tour, and it was great! The guide was very friendly, answered all of our questions, and gave us plenty of time to look around. It was relaxed and the sampling was ample. Pay the extra money for the tasting and the gift - you get 2 drinks in the beer garden and four 0.5l bottles to take with you, and it only costs the equivalent of 4 extra euros! Great time at the brewery!

We were in town, and our hotel suggested a tour around the ancient brewery - about 500 years old. The tour was exceedingly cheap at about 170Kr (£5.60, $8.50) for a guided tour, tasters of the beer and a gift pack of 4 x 500ml bottles to take away). Fascinating to see how these places operate (I'm biased as I work for a small UK brewery) and great to be able to sample the products - very good too. The lemon beer is particularly recommended on a hot day. The old style cafe seems to be very good value though we didn't eat there, and the beer is superb value at about £1 per pint too. Well worth the visit

Not always working, but worth a tour through to learn more about the history of the brewery. The bear was great too.

We did the tour with the tasting samples afterwards and were glad that we did. The different beers were excellent. We did not eat in the restaurant. The tour itself was informative and you saw that standards in Czech Republic are not up to US standards. The mold on the walls and the fact that you could get so close to the equipment did make for a more interesting tour though. Nothing is actually working in the brewery so you do not get to see the beer making in action.
