“Nice little square to visit.”
Reviewed 12 June 2013

The statute in the center is typical of one erected to ward off the Plague that swept Europe long ago. Restaurants, shops and small hotels ring this square. A natural place to visit while in Cesky Krumlov.

“Mariánský sloup”
Reviewed 23 September 2012

The pillar was erected in 1716 as a reminder of the plague period in 1680 and out of graditude for the end of the last plague pandemic which haunted the Czech Republic two years earlier. The sculpture group was created by the Prague sculptor Matěj Václav Jäckel (1655-1738) and consist of the statue of the Virgin Maria Immaculata, images of Rochus of Montpellier (Saint Roch, also known as Rock or Rocco, specially invoked against the plague, patronage of the saint who recovers from the plague), St. Francisus, St. Sebastian and St. Cajetan of Thiene, and standing at the Cobbles the patron saints of the city: holy Wenceslaus I (Duke of Bohemia), St. Vitus, John the Evangelist and St. Jude Thaddaeus (Jude the Apostle).
