We originally found the Gate Restaurant because of its close proximity to the Hilton Hotel where we were staying and had lunch there 3 times because of its straightforward good food at very reasonable prices. Three choices of seating, outside tables in the street, inside ground floor (smoking allowed) or downstairs (non smoking). We chose downstairs – it had a busy and lively atmosphere, subdued lighting, large illuminated fish tank and 4 flat-screen TV monitors playing MTV Music channel – but with the sound almost on mute so didn’t drown out conversation. There was also free Wi-Fi.
The Czech food dishes are hearty and filling and the portion sizes are substantial. If some of us had had a good breakfast earlier, then a starter only for lunch would be adequately filling, for example Soups (homemade and substantial) were around 45CzK = 1.7Euros = $2.00 approx. I had the intriguingly named “Drowned Men” starter which was 2 piquantly bratwurst sausages pickled in vinegar with onions and beer for 62CzK = 2.5 Euros = $3.00 approx. On a day that I had appetite I had the main course Beef Goulash with Grilled Sausage 149CzK = 5.8 Euros = $7.00 approx. For those that couldn’t muster the appetite for the traditional Czech dishes there were choices of salads, pastas, meat dishes, homemade burgers etc. Bottles of wine were very reasonably priced around 350CzK = £13.6 Euros = $17 approx. Service was speedy and friendly and everyone spoke good English. The food is good and the prices are very reasonable.
