“Good art but unfriendly staff”

We visited this art gallery as part of our Prague Castle tour and although some of the art was impressive including a Titian, Rubens and Tintoretto and some famous Czech artists, the staff were very officious and seemed to think that everybody wanted to touch the exhibits and if you walked close to have a good look you requested to move away-I have never experienced such unfriendly staff anywhere in the world.

If this lovely palace seems a little familiar, it is because it was designed by the French architect Jean-Baptiste Mathey, who also designed the Archbishop’s Palace. There are two main entrances to the palace and above the portal of the left-hand entrance you will find the Tuscan Coat of Arms.

The statues on the roof were designed by the German sculptor Jan Brokoff and made by his son Ferdinand. On the wall of one corner of the palace you will see a wonderful statue of St Michael the Archangel sculpted by Ottovio Mosto who was the father of Baroque Illusionism in Prague.

I translated the one star review here, and sadly, I was glad to see we were not the only ones to experience bad behaviour by the staff of this particular area of Prague Castle. I will get to that later.

The pictures we saw were interesting but to be honest we did not see anything remarkable. However we only saw 2 galleries before we left in disgust.

We encountered 3 staff members, all exhibiting rude, discourteous behaviour and frankly it is difficult to understand why 3 such people got jobs in the tourist / public domain area without having better training. The behaviour ranged from loudly berating people for who knows what transgression, following visitors around and standing so close to them you could feel their breath on your neck, and screaming at a 70 year old when they tried to read a piece written in minute type next to a painting. Our party comprised of 2 seniors and 2 females in their 40s. We witnessed other people getting this treatment and were not the only people to leave in disgust.

I will be contacting this organisation, I have never encountered such unreasonable behaviour from people in the service industry.

There was restoration going on when I was last there, but scaffolding did not diminish the beauty! Walking the areas in the surrounding neighborhood will reveal sights familiar in the film "Amadeus" ! The city views from the castle hill are outstanding, and a check of daily concerts- many at little or no charge - can make the experience even better!
