Owner description: There are about 12,000 tombstones in the cemetery, many decorated with animal and plant motifs. The most important figures buried here: the scholar and teacher, Rabbi Judah Loew Ben Bezalel, known as the Maharal (d. 1609) the scholar and poet Avigdor Kara (d. 1439) the founder of the Pinkas Synagogue, Aaron Meshulam Horowitz (d. 1545) the mayor and developer of the Prague Jewish Town, Mordecai Maisel (d. 1601) the Renaissance scholar, historian, mathematicians and astronomer, David Gans (d. 1613) the collector of Hebrew manuscripts and books, Rabbi David Oppenheim (d. 1736) The Old Jewish Cemetery is part of Jewish museum in Prague. The Old Jewish Cemetery is among the oldest surviving Jewish burial grounds in the world and along with the Old-New Synagogue, it is the most important site in the Prague Jewish Town. It was founded in the first half of the 15th century. The earliest tombstone dates back to 1439; the last burial took place 348 years later. Although the cemetery was expanded several times over the centuries, it was still not big enough to meet the needs of the Jewish Town. As space was scarce, bodies were buried on top of each other, with graves layered up to 10 deep.

“Historic and Sad”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

The Old Jewish Cemetry was very eerie, the guide was amazing and fortold facinating yet disturbing history about the tiny patch of ground which contained around 100,000 bodies. Unable to enlarge the burial ground they were forced to bury their dead on top of each other until 12 layers deeo. Around the Cemetery it was surrounded with a lovely market.

“Incredibly moving”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

Walking through this cemetery was incredibly moving. It really gave you a sense of history and a feeling for the oppression Jews have suffered throughout history.

“Don't waste your money!”
Reviewed 2 June 2014 via mobile

I decided to pay the 300 CZK for the tour 2, which includes the Synagogues, the cemetery and the jewish museum, but after the first steps into the Pinkas synagogue I regretted. It's supposed to be a sacred place, but they just take advantage of the arrival of tourists to raise money in polls. The graveyard is not too bad, but it's not so amazing as some comments say. The best you can do is to see it from outside and read its story, which is more interesting than the place itself.

Thank your for your visit. JMP actually consists of the 4 mentioned synagogues, Ceremonial hall, the Old Jewish Cemetery and Robert Guttmann Gallery. We consider the opportunity to see the exhibition in the natural environment of historic synagogues, which are also themselves rare exhibits, to be a great merit of the JMP. It is worldwide unique - you won't find so many synagogues in one place in a variety of architectural styles ranging from Gothic in any other city in the world.
Thank you for your understanding.

Go and walk amongst the graves and soak up this history. It is so moving to see how these people have suffered and have come through.
