Owner description: Mozart played the organ in this church, a magnificent example of the "Prague Baroque" period of the 18th century.

There are two St Nicholas Church's in Prague. This is the more impressive of the two and sits in Lesser Town Square, the other is in the Old Town. It makes a nice place to rest your legs if you are about to walk up to the castle. Entry is 70kc and you aren't allowed to take photos, which is slightly annoying because it has one of the most beautiful interiors in all Prague. The high baroque artworks covering the walls and ceiling were begun in 1673 and continued for the next 80 years by the Jesuits. The ceiling has a spectacular fresco which gives a 3D illusion that it disappears up into heaven. The organ is one of Prague's finest and was once played by Mozart. There are concerts most nights starting 6pm and lasting an hour, they cost 500kc.

Beautiful church. If you have the chance, attend a concert there in the evening and close your eyes and enjoy!!

Nice to see a church without the abundance of crucifixion scenes. I went to a performance there: a soloist and the organ. It was an uplifting and beautiful experience.

We spent a whopping 500Kr to see an early evening performance in this great hall. The programme consisted of a soprano soloist and an organist, both of whom were excellent, playing pieces from Vivaldi and Bach to Dvorak and Schubert. There were only a few people at the performance, all tourists. Strangely the performance took place on a high balcony to the side of the pews, which we couldn't see, instead we faced forwards and stared at the gilted alter for the extent of the performance, which was rather dull. The sound quality was very good and the performers didn't skrimp for the tourist audience, but the lack of visuals combined with the tiny audience in the huge church made for a strange and disconnected experience. I also felt that the programme was a little strangely put together, 3 Alleluias and although I love Bizet's Agnus Dei, it was a weird choice to end the performance on. It was a fine experience, but I don't think it was worth the 500 smackers, I'd spend my money elsewhere next time.

Our first day. Disoriented, jet lagged, a bit grumpy, we wandered into this beautiful cathedral and soaked up the late afternoon light playing off the statues. And a rare treat! An opera singer and a violin concert. This put us in the right frame of mind and made us feel welcome and entranced.
