Mala Strana is a lovely place to stay in Prague quieter than the old town but still walking distance from the Charles Bridge. It has lots of different types of restaurants including a wonderful vegan restaurant called 'Lo veg'. It has bars/pubs that sell local beer and everybody is really friendly apart from a few café/ restaurants on the hill leading up to the castle (staff in these places are pushy and rush you) so just keep walking down hill from the castle where there are plenty of nice place to eat and drink in a relaxed atmosphere. Everywhere will close around 10.30 so a good place if you like early nights and not being disturbed by revellers.

Just wonderful if you want to feel the spirit of the Middle-Aged Europe. There you'll see and hear street singers and even whole orchestras, eat traditional food and (of course!) drink some beer! Don't forget to visit the swans! They are graceful, beautiful and quite friendly.

My wife and I stayed in a delightful penzione in the Mala Strana just 1/2 block from the Kampa garden on a small island in the Vltava river and found that taking walks down each of the small street gave us something different and interesting to see in each one of the streets, sometimes a church, sometimes a new restaurant or bar or coffee shop or just a wonderful view of the river etc. we will definitely be going back and staying in the Mala Strana again.

We walked from the old town to this area of Prague. What a lovely area with beautiful buildings round every corner.
Don't miss the steps coming off the Charles Bridge, which go down to a canal, as well as a park which runs along the side of the river. This area is much quieter than the main drag, but equally as lovely.
