The people looking for 'charm' should have done some basic research as this is clearly a modern avantgarde boutique hotel and this is so obvious from the web site or most other reviews...!

The location is great - only a 5 minute walk from the square - 10 minutes to the Charles Bridge. I found the staff were fine and generally very poite, efficient and helpful - isnt that what you need rather than fawning and grovelling which is obviuosly how some folks like it. The place is spotless - the breakfast is superb and as for comments about a dark street outside - what planet are these people from!!! It's got as much lighting as any other street - it's all part of being in Prague!

Go for the Josef - it's not cheap but in life you do get what you pay for and you wont be disappointed here.

A recent stay at the Hotel Josef ,whilst clean comfortable and well located, was actually proufoundly disappointing for my partner and i who feel that the hotel completely lacks any charm. It is sleek and chic in a late 90's minimalistic way but as a result we found our tiny room totally atmosphereless which was furthered only by being overlooked by an enormous run down housing block whose tenants had no hesitation peering into our room at every opportunity.
Furthermore,we had booked a smoking room and had our booking record on hand to verify this but on arrival we were allocated a non-smoking room.Despite our polite attempts to rectify this the best the hotel staff could suggest was that we could smoke 'out of the window' and no efforts were made to honour our booking specification. It was also blindingly obvious that the level of customer service you can expect at the Josef is largely dependant on how affluent you appear....we were kept waiting several times at reception while the Louis Vuitton/Dior clad residents were dealt with despite our having waited longer and paid the same room tariff as they had...personally i find this kind of snobbery appaling and the total antithesis of decent customer service.
We have visited Prague on several occasions now and the Josef is by far our worst experience, there are several other luxurious options available with miles more charm and a genuine Czeck welcome.

My husband and I have just returned from four nights at Hotel Josef, and we both loved it. I can't speak highly enough about the hotel - our standard room was no 506 in the Pink House, overlooking the courtyard. It was quiet, spacious and very comfortable. The weather was very bright and sunny, and a lovely touch were the exterior window blinds that were centrally controlled by the hotel, but could also be operated by controls beside the bed. Great at maintaining privacy whilst letting maximum daylight in!
The breakfast buffest was excellent - a great selection of fresh and dried fruits, nuts, yogurts, juices, breads etc. The hot breakfast included fried eggs, omlettes and pancakes, with a great selection of teas and coffees.
All dealings with the hotel staff were handled professionally and courteously. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful, giving advice and directions. The bar staff even gave us a champagne bucket full of ice upon our return each day - very handy given the heat! We took a taxi in from the airport but used the hotel's limo service for our return trip, and the driver was just lovely!
I can't understand earlier reviews saying that the hotel was up a side street. All the streets in the Jewish Quarter look like this and I had no worries about coming to or from the hotel at night.
The hotel is perfectly located - about 5 minutes walk in one direction to Old Town Square, and 10 minutes in the other to Wenceslas Square. We had a good meal at Red Hot Blues, a New Orleans/Creole restaurant on Jakubska (turn left outside the hotel, first street on your left) and the best ice cream in the world in Creme Milano (or something) on Parizska, off Old Town Square. Both highly recommended!
My husband has two niggles - no ice machine, and the hot water (for tea) wasn't hot enough, but then he's a tea freak, so don't let that put you off!
All in all, Hotel Josef has spoiled us and we wouldn't think of staying anywhere else during our next visit to Prague.

Have returned from four nights staying at the Josef. Excellent hotel in what I considered to be an ideal location with numerous bars and restaurants close to hand. Standard room was more than adequate on seventh floor with a small walkout balcony overlooking courtyard. All of the staff were helpful. I was slightly concerned prior to departure to read a couple of posts regarding the "dodgy" street. While we all have our own opinions and measures of "dodgy" I found the surrounding area and streets leading to the hotel to be perfectly safe with no apparent threat even when returning late in the evening. The area reflect the attraction of the Old Town/Josefov with narrow winding streets totally different from the Wenceslas Square area which I found tacky in comparison.

My husband and I stayed at the Josef for 3 nights in mid-August. After looking at many hotels on the web I am so pleased that we chose this area as compared to Wenceslas Square - whilst this is worth a visit I'm glad we were not staying there. The Josef is in an excellent location -just a 5 minute walk to the old town square. Another review states that the hotel is in a dodgy back street - not so! The street may be fairly quiet but in no way did we feel unsafe walking back in the dark late at night. The reception and bar staff were all polite and helpful as were those in the breakfast room. We had a standard room (110) on the 1st floor overlooking the courtyard which was quiet and spotlessly clean. The bed was comfy and huge and had the best quality linen I have ever had in a hotel! Breakfasts were superb- everything you could imagine with even a choice of different coffees and teas - all served till 11.30am(12.30 w/e). I would recommend the Josef to anyone looking for a comfortable and stylish place to stay in Prague.A tip for women in Prague - wear your flattest and most comfy shoes (high heels are a no-no) the cobbles are treacherous !

Again, we used Trip Advisor for user’s critique. This time, we stayed at the Hotel Josef (9-12 August 2004), and we were not disappointed. Arrived at the airport with one piece of luggage each, we took the Čedaz airport transport service (1-4 persons 480 Kč) directly to the hotel - glass and chrome all around.

Three receptionists were on duty, all of whom spoke English. Registered and shown to our room swiftly, but courteously. The hotel has two blocks, orange and pink; the hotel’s façade being one of the pink block’s elevation, the other elevation overlooked the courtyard. Our room (pink block, second floor and without a glass bathroom) overlooked the courtyard. The room was clean, stylishly angular with minimalist décor, but adequate. The reception area compromised as the bar/lounge area, albeit the bar/lounge is near the entrance, it is relatively quiet. Breakfast was enjoyable, with a good assortment.

Complimentary services seem to be discretionary - no slippers, no welcome chocolate or bottled water during our stay. Nevertheless, an aptly rated four star hotel.
