“Nice Clean Hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2011

We stayed two nights in the Botel Albatros. We had a room right at water level on the river side, so we could see the boats going by and fall asleep to the sound of seagulls.
The room was pretty basic but very clean and comfortable. The mattresses were fantastic, like sleeping in a cloud. Of course, a day's walking probably helped, but I usually have trouble sleeping because of back problems, and I slept like a baby all night!
The buffet breakfast had just about everything you could imagine, including a delicious home-made soup made freshly that day, sausages, hot and cold cereals, breads, yoghurt, fruit salad, cheese, cold cuts, coffee, tea, juice. A great start to the day. They also have a restaurant and a bar, which we didn't try.
When we first arrived the receptionist was gruff and businesslike, and we felt like we were back in Communist Czechoslovakia! But after a while she warmed up a bit. The rest of the staff were very friendly.
They also have a room where you can store your luggage for free, even after you've checked out. This was great for us as we didn't have to carry everything around for our last day in Prague.
Oh, I almost forgot this: We asked the receptionist which bus to take to the city center. She answered "This IS the city center!" Ha! In fact, you have to walk a good 15 minutes to get to the main tourist areas.
Overall a very nice and comfortable hotel.

Room Tip: The river side

Cheap and cheerful. Good value if you just need somewhere to sleep, although the beds weren't the best. A bit damp as it is a boat on the river, so can't get away from that. Breakfast was your average continental buffet but again not the best, ok if you want to fill up for the morning rather than enjoy a luxury, relaxed meal. Probably wouldn't stay here again if I'm honest but it did the job for my first trip.

We booked for 4 days as I'd read conflicting reviews about this place but after the first day we decided to stay for the rest of the week! Wish I'd booked it all online as the amazing bargin price went up quite a bit over the counter. The rooms are cosy and obviously small as you're on a boat, (I'm surprised how some people moan). Ask for a riverside cabin and the view more than compensates for any inconvenience. The shower is tiny too but very hot and clean, (take your own shampoo etc). The cleaners made our towels into swans and flowers each day and were very sweet. Breakfast good, shame there was weak orange squash on offer instead of juice but that's just a tiny detail in what was a lovely stay. Excellent central location, trams to most places from round the corner and 10mins to old town and Charles bridge.

Room Tip: Street side rooms have no view and traffic noise.

Excellent location. My only complaint is that the first night there was a hell angel party in the bar upstairs and they played unil 4 in the morning. Because it's a boat, and the drums were directly above our room, we were kept awake the whole time. That said, there was an amazing restaurant around he corner. It's within walking distance to everything. The breakfast is nice and it's very cheap. I would recommend it, just beware of old rockers.

We stayed at Botel Albatros for 4 nights for the bargain price of £100. I would rate our overall experience of the Botel as good, and would probably recommend to friends.
Pro's:
- located in quiet area, 5-10 minutes from Old Town and New Town
- cheap, room cleaned daily with English speaking staff
- breakfast buffet contained a wide selection to choose from- avoid the coffee at all costs though
- good selection of tourist information brochures and leaflets in the reception

Con's:
- don't be expecting luxury - cabins are tiny and the bathrooms even worse! Our bathroom was about three foot by three foot, into which a toilet, basin and shower was squeezed (and the most annoying toilet roll dispenser!)
- TV - only one English channel which happened to be Eurosport
- drinks are overpriced in reception - I paid 30 CZK for a bottle of water, which you can get in the local supermarket 5 mins up the road for 7 CZK
- on the website its states stay more than 3 nights and receive a 200 CZK voucher to use in the restaurant/bar - despite staying four nights we did not receive any such voucher
- nightlife was really poor - this may have been a result of the low season, but by 10.30 pm the streets were almost empty!

Tips while in Prague
- Currency exchange - if you need to change currency shop around... we were offered 1025 CZK in one Western Union branch for €50 only to be given 1200 CZK in the next! Be wary of people standing outside these exchange shops - these street traders are trying to con you out of money--> for example, one man physically put 500 CZK into my boyfriends jacket pocket to get him to change €20 with him, all the while saying 'Please I need this!' - hence be wary of fake notes
- Prague Card- probably the best way to see what Prague has to offer in terms of buildings, museums etc. 2 day ticket for 780 CZK and 3 day ticket also available. However, be aware that entry into Prague Castle requires the pink vouchers in the back of the guide book and the card itself will not suffice! Hence, bring your guide book with you at all times!
- City Sightseeing Tour (Hop-on Hop-off ) i.e. the red bus - located at the bottom of Old Town Square beside the Irish pub 'Caffreys' is this tour company. They offer a much better deal than other company's at 500 CZK for 48 hours and all tours are with English speaking guides
-Be aware that alot of museums and places of interest are closed on Mondays
- We found Prague quite expensive, however money saving strategies would be to buy all your snacks such as chocolate, crisps in supermarkets such as Billa or Albert (located in the Shopping Pallidum in Republic Square)
- Shopping Pallidum - for all you who like shopping, the Pallidum in Republic Square has over 180 shops with the top floor consisting of restaurants and bars including an Indian, Thai, Lebanese, American Sports Bar & Casino and fast food McDonalds, KFC, Burger King
-Public Transport - cheap and easy way of getting about Prague. A 24hr ticket is 100 CZK, whilst a 26 CZK = 75 mins. This is an easy way of getting to and from the Airport (Mustek--> End of the line --> bus 119).

I stayed here in one of the two suites with 5 friends and we loved it! Quiet (apart from the seagulls, which you can't complain about when staying on a boat!) plenty of space, even with three people in each room and the staff were really friendly, organising airport taxis for us and giving us plenty of helpful information. Breakfast was basic, meat, cheese, bread and cereal, but there was plenty of it. Location wise, we were only 10 minutes from most of the tourist attractions, bars and restaurants and the walk along the river to Charles bridge is picturesque enough to be worth the walk. This is not a luxury hotel, and while the beds were comfy, some things had seen better days. Even so, our room was cleaned every day to a good standard.

Third stay at The Albatros. Couldnt agree more with the previous review. We also found the staff great. Take a kettle if you want coffee in your room HOWEVER, there was no problem taking a coffee pot, milk and sugar from the breakfast room back to your cabin.
A superb walk along the river to the centre of Prague (wrap up though it is freezing at this time of year). The A;batros is somewhere you simply have to experience at least once in your life. We would definately recommend this place and after all a holiday is what you make it.
