“Disgusting, horrible experience”
Reviewed 24 July 2011

Our stay in this hotel was a tragedy... We were offended as soon as we walked in to this place. Very narrow minded staff made comments about age difference between me and my husband. When we walked into our room, there were coffie stains all over the place, dirty douvet and mouldy bathroom. There was even a green mould over the toilet roll! Extremely unhigenic. For so called warm breakfast (every day the same for 5 days - bread, ham, cheese, egg) the only warm thing was coffie which was so weak and decafeinated didnt remind coffie at all. Neither by smell nor by colour. Whenever we have asked the staff about anything (like a real coffie) they were extremely rude and unhelpful. The only nice person was the chef. Except him no one ever smiled on us, and the staff made us feel like intruders. Wouldnt reccomend to anyone unless you want to experience hollidays from hell! Youth hostels have better standards.

Upon arrival the lady on reception did not seem to know what she was doing and appeared very surprised to see us! She could only offer us a smoking 'double' room or a non smoking twin (though I did specify double with easytobook.com). We regrettably chose the smoking double as my girlfriend and I like to share the same bed. The room stank horribly and turned out to have 2 single beds pushed together, with 2 single sheets! (Also I should mention the sheets were disgusting and didnt even fit the beds)
The staff were unfriendly and rude, the night barman constantly looked very unhappy to have to get up from watching television with his friend and serve us a drink, and one evening we caught him pointing and shaking his head at us to what looked like the hotel manager (who also stared and scowled) when we asked for a dessert menu after a meal!!
The hotel staff didn't provide enough bowls/plates or cutlery at breakfast, but that didn't matter too much as there was never enough milk for all the guests, so we couldn't have cereal anyway. Breakfast was supposedly served until 10am, however the staff started taking the food away at 9.45am which left some guests visibly disappointed and probably hungry.
After the extra charge to our bill ripping us off, this is definitely a hotel to avoid in our opinion

the toilet/ shower smelt like sewerage and wafted into the room, my mattress and linen were covered in gross stains and there was dirt and dust and dead bugs on the floor. The staff were really rude and extremely unhelpful. The room rates were really cheap so I guess you get what you pay for!

First of all we arrived at the Hotel at 11pm, check in wasn't meant to be allowed until 2pm, We asked if there was some where too put our bags and they said it was no problem to check in early which we thought was nice.
We brought out self a bus/tram ticket each for 22k, we found out later that there cheaper if brought outside the hotel. (18k) The tram stop is 5 min walk to the right of the botel. Its 7 stops to the main part of the town and takes maybe 10 mins. In all honesty it looked like a lot of people would never validate there tickets on the trams.

First nights sleep was very nice, you can turn the radiators up or down via a tap on the left hand side of the room. We asked for extra sheets and didn't end up using them. We did find the odd ant in the cabin but it was nice and clean in general. House keeping was very very good. We would go for breakfast and by the time we come back the room was fully made up. Great service so we tipped them well at the end of the break.

The hotel is as mentioned out of the way. but very nice in our eyes. The river had no smell and it was nice to nick a bit of bread and feed the ducks in the morning.

We ate in the hotel once and it worked out very expensive, the food was good but was almost twice the price of even places in old town. We didn't eat in there again due to this.

The bar was nice, but felt the bar staff was a little rude. The bar was advertised as closing at 01:00 but on the Saturday night it shut at 23:30. For the last 30 Min's they put on some horrid music to try and get rid of everyone. The beers was also 54k and only 29k over the road.

The next night we ate in a place called Negatif over the road from the hotel, its one tram stop away or about 15 min walk. The food & price was so good we went back the next day. The staff are really nice and friendly, the prices are good and the food is amazing. Less then half the price of the hotel. Free wifi there too.

The hotel has free Wifi in the reception area but its not very fast. fine for checking emails.

We would of liked to have had a dvd player in the room as the tv channels wasn't great for anyone English as the only English channel was Euro Sport.

What do you want for less than £20 per night double room bed and breakfast? Botel Racek is located slightly out of town on the river Vltava a floating hotel with small but comfortable ensuite cabins. The reception is fully manned 24 hours and the staff are pleasent and helpful. There is plenty to eat at breakfast providing you like cold meat and hard boiled eggs but best of all, the views accross the river are beautiful. You can go out after breakfast and feed the ducks if you like. The hotel is about half a mile from the start of the city centre and takes about ten minutes on the frequently running trams to Charles bridge. Tickets are available from Reception, a 24 hour ticket costs 120Kc. The hotel has its own bar and restaraunt but there is a local pub accross from the tram stop where you can get Czech beer for around £1.20 a pint and Czech food from £3 about half the price of the hotel, It has a big green sign and is called Hostinec Na Stare Sokolovne well worth a visit. For a value-for-money short stay hotel it's brilliant and it's location gets you out of the busy city when you have had enough. Five nights bed and breakfast for less than £100 for two, can't go wrong.

This botel was an interesting choice by a friend. There's no reason to stay here unless you really want to save money, I mean really want too. It was 60 euros for 3 nights so expectations were low.

The beds are hard, only twins available and anyone talking in the corridor will wake you up. Breakfast is the biggest problem, I need to start the day with at least a decent cup of tea or coffee and there is no where to get one from in the hotel or near by. However on the up side its only 120 crowns for an all day tram/train ticket and a 5 minute walk to the tram so 10 -15 minutes into town or a nice 50 minute walk on a sunny day. The local restaurant Negatif Restaurant Grill is 10 minutes walk and has excellent steaks and service, 4 hours of eating and drinking cost £30. Don't eat on the boat.

It's hard to recommend but at the same time if you're budget is really really tight maybe its an ok option.

After having arrived 6 hours later than planned due to adverse weather conditions, I was still able to eat in the restaurant which is open from 11am to midnight as was the bar. Good choices of traditional Czech food on the menu, well presented and service was very efficient. If you want burgers or typical English food then you won't find them on the menu. But be adventurous try something new, you ARE in a foreign country, beef or pork are still the same the world over.
Having been on other boats/cruise ships, the cabin was much bigger than expected, very comfortable, warm, with lots of storage space, TV and separate bathroom with shower. What more could I want? Except a kettle for making tea as I am a tea addict. But I soon got over that as every evening I would take my thermos flask to the bar where it was filled with tea so that I could take it back to my cabin.
The staff were always very friendly and their English was excellent which didn't stop me trying to use the very few words of Czech I had learned like "please", "thank you", good morning" ...
I found out a lot of information from them in particular about what to see, using the trams for which you can buy tickets from reception. There is a tram stop a short walk from the boat, the service is very frequent and the no17 will take you into the Old Town which is an excellent starting point to get to know Prague. Don't forget to buy a return ticket for later in the day! On my first day I forgot the return journey and it was a long walk back from the Castle but in the snow and walking by the river I was able to take a lot of night shots and some of them turned out really well.
Would I stay here again, a resounding YES.
