“Very Gracious People”
Reviewed 24 May 2012

Our family of two grandparents, two parents, and two teenage boys spent a delightful weekend in Prague at this lovely house. The host, Mr. Jan Rippi, his wife Charlotta and son Jacob were so welcoming, gracious, and concerned for our comfort. We were greeted with fresh coffee (delicious), maps (accurate), and directions on what to see (all very interesting) and where to eat (all very delicious). Breakfasts are included, and everyone in the family is an excellent cook (for scrambled eggs, at least). The location is perfect for those willing to see Old Prague on foot.

Room Tip: We occupied two rooms on the 3rd floor and were quite comfortable there.

We were in Prague for the wedding of our former exchange student. I made all of our arrangements and following trip advisors recommendations, booke our stay here. Wow!!! First of all, we like to stay at places that give a flavor of the country , not some big chain that cannot offer such a feeling. Tucked in past the American Embassy ( tht alone will make it easy for people to redirect you if you get lost) and directly across the street from the German Embassy. We were at the bottom of the Castle and could easily walk up there in 15 minutes. Ditto for the Charles Bridge area and the Jewish cemetery and synagogues. Jan and his staffincluding Marta were WONDERFUL , sitting you down for an overview of the area and restaurants. There is a winding staircase to rooms( not sure if elevator as these are old buildings). Everything is in Czech antigues. There is a delightful brakfast room where you will be offered eggs and bacon, cereal, breads, cheeses, yogurt to your fill. There is a computer for use as well as some exercise equipment in the lower area but not sure you will need it after walking the cobblestones and hills of Prague!!!, Our Czech friends were amazed at our find and said in future stays when returning to their country they would stay THERE as opposed to what they had booked!!!

As requested, we were met at the Prague airport by Tomas Rippl, a son of the owners of this fine B & B. After exchanging a few words in English, we discovered that Tomas is perfectly fluent in Portuguese & has visted Brazil several times. So after the long flight from Brazil, we were taken to the "Big Boot" & were able to rest up from our trip.

As others who have posted reviews, I agree that this is one of the most agreeable places we have found. The service was perfect. The location could not be better. When we left & Jan Rippl was driving us to the airport, Jacob called to inform that I had left the connecting wires for my PC & Kindle in the room. He brought them out to us before our flight to Lviv saving the day.

For a pleasant stay in this interesting city, Dum U Velke Boty is your best bet.

Room Tip: Avoid room with street light just outside

Stayed for 4 nights at the start of May. We booked the hotel's transfer service from the airport to the hotel, and right from the start, our hosts were friendly and welcoming.

Location wise, I think it would be hard to beat. The old town streets were frenetically busy with tourists day and night, and the area round Wencelas Square is also busy. The hotel is in Mala Strana, just 5 mins walk from Charles Bridge, and a few minutes downhill from the Castle. It's in the embassy district, and is quiet and calm- we really appreciated getting back to this after mingling with all the tourist crowds. There are plenty of bars and eating places close by, and Jakob recommended several for us, within easy walking of the hotel. There's also a couple of very useful mini marts close by. Mala Strana itself is full of elegant buildings and charming little streets, and is very near to Petrin and Kampa parks.

Breakfast was great. I think we disappointed our hosts as we only needed a continental breakfast and they were very keen to provide us with a cooked one! There's internet access downstairs and an honesty bar.

Bedrooms were lovely - all completely individual and with heaps of character. Beds are SO comfortable, with very good quality bedlinens. My room looked out onto the street and German embassy, and was very quiet, even though I sleep with the window open. Bathrooms are compact but very well equipped with especially good power showers.

Above all, the standard of housekeeping was supreme - everything is clean and pristine, but the house is so full of charm that it's completely unlike staying in some corporate ,sterile hotel. Everybody speaks very good English and they are always helpful and informative. It's a real sanctuary, and a very relaxing place to stay.

We were sad to leave, and would definitely stay there again on any return visits to Prague.

Room Tip: I had room 33, with the big brass bed, overlooking the Embassy.

I come to Prague regularly for work, and typically bring my family with me so that they can have a vacation. We always stay in the House at the Big Boot. In fact, it is one of the best B&Bs I've ever stayed at (and I've stayed at a lot of them).

The biggest plusses for me are:

1. Big suites (with separate rooms and privacy for the whole family) for the cost of an ordinary hotel room.

2. Extremely helpful, warm-hearted, and intelligent hosts. They bend over backwards to make your trip work, whatever your needs happen to be.

3. Great location, right by the castle, Charles Bridge, and various tram lines.

4. Safety and quiet, due to the location directly beside the American and German Embassies.

5. Free, fast, reliable internet (essential for work).

6. Good breakfasts.

7. Nice little amenities (e.g., the give-a-book-take-a-book shelf; the friendly car rides to and from the airport; the fridge filled with juice, water, and beer accessible to guests at all hours; etc.).

I would say that if you are looking for the corporate hotel experience, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a B&B experience OR just want an alternative to an ordinary hotel -- a way to get something more for your money -- this is the best in Prague.

Room Tip: Talk to the hosts about your needs. Every room is different.

Our family stayed here for 2 nights in May. Our hosts were fabulous and gracious, very helpful. We stayed in the first floor flat (2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms). We loved the breakfast: breads, meat, cheese, coffee, tea, plus egg & bacon. The location was wonderful for seeing Prague. Our hosts arranged a pick up for us at the Main Train Station and arranged a taxi cab back again. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone. If we ever make it back to Prague again, we would certainly stay here.

What you can expect:
- Large room with antique furniture (Brass Beds and Ceramic Fire Place)
- Safe location, in embassy area
- Near to Prague Castle and Charles Bridge ( better than staying on the other side of the river)
- Very friendly hosts
- Modest Breakfast
