This hotel was the most expensive one of our 3-week trip (Berlin, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna, and Munich), and I’m sorry to say - aside from the awesome breakfast buffet - it didn’t live up to our expectations.
First the positive - location is excellent. The welcome drink (a coupon good for soda, wine, or beer for everyone in the room) is a lovely idea. The gym and sauna are free and quite nice. Our room was spacious with two benches, a small sofa, and a table. Our bed was comfortable, and if you don’t like the pillow, a pillow menu offers options. We removed mini-bar items from the small refrigerator and used it to store small items and wine of our own. The room also has a safe. If you don’t want to have the room made up every day, hang a sign on the door handle, and receive a free soda or beer or wine. Finally, the breakfast buffet is amazing. Breads with butter/jams/several types of honey, meats, cheeses, fish, yogurts, dry cereals, muesli, fresh fruit, freshly squeezed OJ and other fruit juices, and a coffee machine to make your own cappuccino, milk coffee, etc. I’m probably leaving something out! The staff was courteous and quickly served juice and coffee and cleared dishes. This was the highlight of our 3-night stay.
The negative - the sliding door to our bathroom (room 411) did not work. We had to wrestle it every single time we wanted a little privacy. The sink and tub don’t drain, the tub is extremely slippery (take caution), and the towels are thin and scratchy. The room had a slight sewage smell to it, which was even worse when we returned from a day out sightseeing (outdoor temps were 80-85 F). The first night, we had adequate air conditioning. The next night the power went out for 3 hours, and even once back on, our room never recovered, and we had no air conditioning. One very kind employee (Jan) checked it for us the next afternoon after we returned again from sightseeing to a stiflingly hot room. Jan apologized for the power issue, brought us a fan and a half bottle of champagne. We went back out for the evening, room was still hot, and we slept badly. We saw Jan again the next morning, and he said he’d work on getting us another room. When he went off duty, he left a note for the night staff, and when we returned, staff agreed to let us change rooms. Another kind employee showed us 3 different rooms, all on our floor, and we took a slightly cooler one. But our room never did cool to the temperature even in the hallway.
Let me acknowledge that staff was responsive, and we appreciated that. But we could barely enjoy our room with the door issue, the smell, and the heat. We know it’s an old building, and problems occur, so I will say if you book a room here in the spring or summer, make sure it doesn’t face the west sun. There are so many good things about this hotel, but one very unfortunate occurrence can - and did - overshadow those. But, my goodness, we will always remember that breakfast!
