First advice - i was in that hotel more than ten years ago...but, after reading the reviews, i guess that the Hotel Opatov did not change at all during the years!

It is placed in a peripherical zone of Prague, with sparse and very tall Soviet-style buildings, separated with wide and totally empty green zones (you can go from an aggregate of buildings to another one through small pedestrian streets). Definitely a good ambient for cold war movies - in the reality, just a common peripherical zone.
The panoramic view was not the best. Believe or not, in front of our window there was a small graveyard!

It's probably better to not go alone - the zone is very isolated. Metro station is ten minutes distant.

The zone, albeit extremely far from the center, is well-served with a supermarket and some other shops, however there was a BMW without wheels, put on bricks - not a very good sign.

Hotel is very essential and anonymous, in full Communist style. No frills at all. Rooms are wide and complete with (very old!) fridge and TV set. TV did not work though - it was so old that probably it was there just to be part of the Communist-style furniture.

Bathroom was separated with very thin panels. In front of the WC, a panel can be opened, showing the pipes! However, everything was very clean. In the WC there was the classic "stripe of rust" caused by the water - hopefully it was rust and not some other brown matter.

Breakfast is normal. That hotel probably still carries the character of the Communist era. Service was quite frugal - personnel is there only to clean and work there. Don't leave stuff in the room - my cheap camera disappeared :-))

Decent hotel for young people, rough but very clean. But DON'T go if you don't have the right spirit and if you have precious goods with you. .

If you have a chance to book a room in ANY other hotel, TAKE IT NOW!!! My choir stayed here for about a week a few summers ago left quite traumatized by our experience. Our choir director woke up in the middle of the night to see A STRANGE MAN in the room, robbing her!! Noticing her, he grabbed her purse and ran. The lock on the door didn't work, and later inspection of the lock on *my* door revealed it didn't work either!
The elevators broke down and got stuck 50% of the time, and after a few horrific experiences we all took to strictly taking the stairs...all 16 flights of them...up to our floor. You must relinquish your passport upon checking in, supposedly for "safekeeping," and you are not granted any access to it until you check out.
The metro to and from downtown lets you out a distance from the hotel in a sketchy area, I do NOT recommend traversing this alone, nor at night.

The Opatov does not deserve three starts. It actually deserves no stars. The building looks like a relic from the Communist era, as do the nearby apartment buildings. But enough with its virtues: since we were only two people we receives a standard Opatov two-bedroom suite. One room had three small beds with foam mattresses, the other room had two foam-mattress beds pushed together. The toilet and shower room were separated from the living area by a wall made of something that seems to be a bit stronger than cardboard but not as sturdy as plastic. We also had a fridge in the entrance, which was not plugged in. The phone did not work, the wireless internet which was only available in the lobby and for an extra fee did not work. The television worked, but was clearly another artifact from Communist days since it had a 4x2 inch screen.
Czech waiters we met in Prague were absolutely shocked to hear we were placed there by the last-minute deal we got, since it is known as a place for school groups. It is very far from the center.
However, it was reasonably clean, and the metro ride to town was easy enough. But it is not geared toward tourists on a vacation, and there are deals to be had in hotels within the center of Prague.
We checked out after one night and forfeited our money and wish we had done so the moment we arrived.

we booked our trip through last minuite and got this hotel. It said the room had a bath this was a tray 6 inches deep!, there wasnt even a proper bed just 2 devans pushed together, the balcony was covered in bird poo, we went to reception and asked 4 a refund so we could stay someware else but they wouldnt do it.the trains only 2 mins away but was very dodgy, specialy at night.the lifts are dangerous we took the stairs to the 7th floor, the fire exit signs were spray painted on the wall, they take your passport when you arrive and you dont get it till you check out.this hotel ruined my trip to prague i would never go there again!
