“Magical Stay at a Wonderful Hotel”
Reviewed 29 December 2008

Just returned from an incredible stay at this lovely hotel tucked away in peaceful Mala Strana. We have been very fortunate with our hotel stays in Europe but MO gets top grades in all our most important categories:

Location
Accommodations
Dining
Service

Set on a quiet cobblestone street in Mala Strana- near the Charles Bridge (and around the corner from the Lennon Wall) it is a beautiful hotel that has managed to preserve its historic charm while providing luxurious modern amenities. Our spacious suite had comfortable sitting areas, a lux king-sized bed with soft sheets and plush down duvet & pillows and the most wonderful shower (with a double Grohe rainhead) we have ever found in Europe. Our room was in the "Spa Addition" which encompasses the Abbey Chapel and has a colored glass floor that reveals the original foundations. The whole addition is infused with the MO signature scent of frangipani, jasmine and mandarin. A fabulous buffet was included every morning (try the yogurt smoothie) and even though it was not on the menu they were happy to accommodate special requests (like Palacinke (Czech pancakes). Until now Andrea (from the Excelsior in Florence) and Jean-Pierre (Hôtel Prince de Galles) had tied for our best-ever concierges but Vaclav Jancarik at the MO Praha is right up there with them. Like other great concierges he made helpful suggestions but more than that- he went out of his way to provide "above and beyond" service. After we mentioned how impressed we were with the jazz trio that played on the jazz boat he recommened he surprised us on our last day with a copy of the hard to find CD. Prague is a fascinating city and we were fortunate to visit when we had the city to ourselves. The MO was a perfect oasis to retreat to at the end of a busy exploring day

Stayed at Mandarin Oriental for 6 nights over Christmas in a Mandarin Deluxe Room (#122). First the positives. The room was very nice - spacious, well appointed, large comfortable bed and excellent bathroom. The public areas were also good - atmospheric restaurant, modern comfortable bar, good gym. We had a spa session which, whilst expensive at EUR 272 for two, was very good. Location of the hotel is perfect for a tourist. But we had three 'issues'. Firstly the food was average. We had breakfast in the hotel 5 times and were consistently disappointed. The buffet seemed stale - bread verging on dry, fruit not particularly fresh, jams tasteless. Only two juices, orange & grapefruit which in fairness were okay. My wife ordered boiled eggs 4 minutes on 3 days and they varied between almost hard boiled to watery, cool and underdone. I ordered Eggs Benedict on first day and it was awful - no flavour to the Hollandaise, eggs overdone and spongy muffin. You pay extra for eggs, unbelievably. Our second problem was price. Everything in the hotel is expensive. Examples - in room internet connection EUR 22 per day, a Mulled Wine and one beer in the bar EUR 20, aforementioned breakfast EUR 21 for buffet or EUR 29 with eggs. But the biggest disappointment was the complete lack of Christmas 'feel'. On Christmas Eve we had the special dinner in Essensia Restaurant. The restaurant did not have a single Christmas decoration, no tree, no tinsel, not even a Christmas cracker. The staff made no mention of Christmas. The food was okay, just okay. Having stayed in hotels for the last 11 Christmases we've come to expect a small gift, perhaps chocolate, or even just a card in the room but no such luck here. Where there was piped music, for example in the bar, it had not been changed for Christmas. I cannot recall, even once, being wished 'Merry Christmas' by a staff member. Bizarre and disappointing. So would we return ? No. Which is disappointing as we will definitely return to Prague which is a lovely and enchanting city.

Just spent 3 nights here. Booked direct with hotel for our wedding anniversary. They had an offer on 3 nights for the price of 2 and also got breakfast included.Booked the Limo from the airport (1600 Czk). Met in terminal and bags taken off us. Car was a great big Merc with plenty of legroom in back and that's someone of 6'5 talking. Relaxed drive approx 20 mins or so (11pm).Easy booking in then taken to a what was a huge room and nealy the same size again bathroom. Wine, cake and roses left for us along with greeting cards.Massive double bed, huge pillows. Double set of windows so couldn't hear any noise from the street.Shower was about 5' sq. Bath even I could lie down in !!!Towels changed twice a day so you had fresh for the morning. Even provided an adaptor if you forgot one. Bottled water by the bed everyday.Complimentary toiletries replaced daily.Dressing gowns, slippers, etc.Kept finding other stuff in draws. They even leave you an umbella in the wardrobe !!Have to say the only slight downside was the breakfast . If we hadn't got it included then probably would have eaten out but it was a very relaxing start to the day.One other slight negative...everything has tax (9%) added to it with the limo @19% so that "boosts" the final bill somewhat. It's about 5 mins very gentle stroll to Charles Bridge ( The Castle side).Prague itself....well simply walk around you stumble across everything without getting worn out. Old Town Sq 15 mins on 1st night looking for somewhere to eat. You could never starve or go thirsty in this city !!!! Meat eaters paradise and still good value for both food and drink without going off the beaten track.Back to the hotel.....took the limo back to the airport......started chucking it down. As we got out driver rushed round to wife's side with umbrella then said she could keep it. Also offered me one as well...nice touch. To sum up......Its certainly not the cheapest but as a special occasion this was quite simply a fantastic hotel from location to service and would recommed it to anyone thinking of doing a bit extra for a romantic break away.To all the staff at MO Prague.....Thank you for a memorable trip.

This was my second visit to the hotel. I found the hotel impressive the first time (it had just opened) but this time it was even better. It is a boutique hotel and in a short time has become my home away from home in prague. I am surprised at some of the comments made ont his site about the hotel - can only assume the guests were determined to find fault.

Unlike the other leading hotels in prague the location is in the old town and about 5 minutes walk from the charles bridge. It compensates by being in a beautiful old area surrounded by embassies and pretty courtyards and cafes. As a result one is not swept away by the hoards of tourists that stalk through the city.

The accomodation I had was contemporary and elegant. The hotel is built within an old monastery and has been designed to perfection. What truly makes a great hotel are the staff who reflect management. This hotel gets it right . From arrival to departure all the staff were pleasant, helpful, cheerful and very able. The concierge team were impressive and helpful as was the assistant manager who made a point of "walking the floors" and greeting guests.

I stay in the best hotels in the world and often rate manadarin oriental as the group that gets it more right than others. With this hotel they have exceeded expectations. I do acknowledge that the hotel may not be for everyone - it is classy !

After a disappointing stay at the Boscolo New York Palace in Budapest, my stay at the Mandarin Oriental in Prague was truly a luxury experience. A beautiful and serene hotel that offers a relaxing and enjoyable stay. This is my second stay at this hotel and I recommend it to all my friends and clients..

We were met at the airport by the hotel limousine and whisked to the hotel. There we were greeted by the Deputy Manager, and given a nice cup of Jasmine tea. We were taken immediately to our room where we checked-in. We asked for the same room as before (which we got!) and they also provided the extra pillows and towels which we had requested on our previous stay. This was what I would expect in a great hotel – they remember each guests individual requirements.. I am a platinum member of other hotel groups, but sometimes they don’t even bother to read my profile.

We stayed for 5 nights this time round and I must say it was a delight. The staff were very friendly, efficient and couldn’t do enough. The food at breakfast was always fresh and very appetising. I would also recommend the hotel restaurant. The Deputy Manager was utterly charming and greeted every guest by name.. I thought all the concierge staff were excellent, helpful and effective – they recommended some great restaurants and art shops.

I will be definitely be returning to this hotel, I am a fan of the Mandarin Oriental Group and I wish other hotels would take heed.

This was our third stop of a trip around Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria and our first experience with Mandarin Oriental thanks to a relatively reasonable rate. We would certainly stay again there and would look for good rates at other Mandarin Oriental properties worldwide. We have not stayed in the MO in New York due to its outrageous rates.

The hotel is located away from Prague's tourist bustle but just a walk away from everything. We arrived at night after a long drive from Munich. Check-in was smooth and quick, the car taken care of and we were in the room in no time. The room was an upgraded suite thanks to Amex Platinum program. High ceilings and lots of space everywhere; separate living room and bedroom with huge flat screen TV's in both. The desk was comfortable and had essential office supplies. Welcome amenities included fruit and chocolates presented beautifully. The bed was very comfortable with full sheets, a welcome change from the beds in hotels in Germany. The bathroom was spacious with the largest shower I have seen in a hotel. Bathroom amenities are top notch. The room and all public areas were meticulously clean.

All staff is very professional, helpful and eager to please. No language problems either. The concierge had excellent recommendations for shopping and was able to get us tickets to the philharmonic. We had a fantastic lunch in the hotel's oriental restaurant. The breakfast was not to our expectations, it was just acceptable. Regardless, the quality of the food was very good.

If you want typical Czech food in a cozy environment try U Modre Kachnicky which is right next to the hotel. We had a very satisfying dinner there.

Prague is a city that's suitable for walking and everything is very close. I was surprised that so many tourists were there in October. I can't imagine how it is during the peak summer. The best bet is to cross the bridge, walk the old town and take a cab back.

In summary, this has been one of our best hotel experiences in Europe.
