Hotel Dar
Ranked #279 of 649 Hotels in Prague
Reviewed 9 July 2012

The Hotel Dar is located no more than a few tens of meters from the Astronomical Clock tower on Old Town Square in downtown Prague. One could not ask for a hotel better situated to historic central Prague. The room was comfortable and clean and furnished with spartan but adequate furniture and was equipped with a safe for valuables that was large enough to hold a laptop. An adequate breakfast was served in the basement of the hotel - which appears to in the daytime & evening act as a wing of the adjacent restaurant. The hotel reception might put people off as the front room is actually small and cramped - and it is true that on occasion the front door is locked at night (after dark) and one needs to wait for the receptionist to unlock the door. The hotel is located in a narrow alley - and access by taxi is quite difficult - during the day forget it - as the alleyway and side streets will be too crowded. Nonetheless, the reception happily booked a taxi for an early morning departure to the airport and the taxi backed up
straight to the front of the hotel (taxi rides to the airport are a fixed price of 550 Cz Koruna). If one is not too encumbered by luggage, though I would recommend taking the metro to Staromestska station, and walking the 4-5 blocks to the hotel. The hotel appears to cater heavily to a Russian-speaking clientele - indeed about 5 of the TV channels are in Russian.

I have only two complaints regarding this hotel: First, the wifi/internet was so unstable and slow that it was worthless. When I mentioned this to the reception - they said they knew ... it became marginally better on the weekend. Second: the IT equipment used at reception seemed a bit antiquated and slow; It took a bit longer than it should have to print out a receipt on departure.

Still if one seeks a comfortable, convenient, and modest hotel in downtown Prague, then this hotel would certainly fit the bill.

One final piece of advice does not concern the hotel: DO NOT TAKE TAXIS FROM THE MAIN TRAIN STATION, HLAVNI NADRAZI, IN PRAGUE. The taxi drivers are unprofessional and perfectly ready and willing to fleece travelers.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back of the hotel may be quieter.

Couldn't have asked for a better location! Walk out the lane and you see the Astronomical Clock already. Stayed in the attic room, had a view of the clock tower. Room was clean, big and spacious. No complains at all.

Bad side is that the lane might be abit dodgy and quiet at night. Plus, the breakfast was really just average.

Worst hotel experience in years and we stay in many. Their coffee was an insult. Their breakfast horrendous. The staff couldn't have been more rude. The room was awful; the sheets were itchy, the curtains didn't block the 5am sun, but that doesn't matter because you'll be woken by awful noises at 6am anyhow. How this hotel has such high ratings is beyond me, there's no way anyone could enjoy this dump. They are gaming the system. They rushed us out, and overcharged us. Check your bill. They made up a fictional conversion rate based on a high day for the crown from 2011, basically a 20% surcharge on your quote.

Room Tip: Find an honest hotel

My first time in Prague with my love ...one of the most beautiful cities in the world is probably the understatement of the century; without doubt, it *is* the most beautiful city I have ever visited . and spending only 1 night in this beauty...but i'm glad that we spend it in this beautifullllll enchanting hotel . The hotel located in a tiny cute little alley ,only 2 minutes walk from the old town square which gives you the nice atmosphere of being in the middle of everything. the room was so quiet with an EXCELLENT sleeping quality ... the sheets and pillows were awesome ... super comfortable specially after spending a long day city tour :) * I should steal one of those pillows :)) !! *
Great breakfast , great value for money , great in everything ....

This is a great base to explore Prague. Just behind the Old Town Square, we walked everywhere. The restaurant right next door (hotel guests get a discount) to it is worth eating at for some traditional Czech food. We ate at a couple of places and decided this was the best value and food of the lot. Room was pleasantly larger than we expected with free wired internet and friendly helpful staff. Would highly recommend this hotel as the place to stay to explore Prague especially for first time visitors. You can't beat the location.

If you want to see Prague this is the hotel for you, couldn't be better positioned. As for everything else, well it's pretty average, breakfast wasn't good, rooms are clean and a good size. Biggest problem for me was car parking, I ended up about half a mile in a very expensive car park. Oh and close your windows at night, a bell chimes every hour in the square.
