Could this be the worst hotel in Europe? Probably not but it is the worst I have ever stayed in. In fact is was bad enough to be funny. The furniture was either recently bought from the local charity shop or had been there for the past 35 years. The bedding and pillow seemed to be of a similar vintage. The TV was probably only 20 years old but didn't work anyway. The towels were wafer thin.

Breakfast was apparently included in the price but I was asked to pay seperately. The food was OK at least.

The staff were reasonably helpful. They ordered a taxi for me anyway.

The only reason I stayed here was that it was close to the train station and still open late at night. They are its biggest positives. Oh, and it gave me a laugh.

We chose this hotel as our stay in Ostrava was so we could arrive by train from Poland and hire a car. By doing this instead of hiring the car in Poland we saved about 600Euros in one-way fees. So, we just needed a reasonable bed for the night easily reached from the train station, in a quiet area and walking distance to somewhere decent for dinner.
Hotel Max ticked all the boxes, it's about 50m from the train station and has an in-house restaurant that is inexpensive and serves good food. The waitress who doubled as receptionist was friendly and helpful. A simple breakfast was included in the tariff, wich was 1000Kc for two. It's not in the night club district and the only noise we heard was a slight rattle in the window from passing trains occasionally, not enough to really register after the first or second time.
From the outside the Hotel Max looks like a grand old lady who has come down a little in the world. The area, being close to the train station, is no longer a prime district, but it's by no means dire, just a little run down. Our room, which was accessed by a flight of stairs (no lift) had a sort of small ante-room where the wardrobe/ luggage store was, a bathroom off to the rght and straight ahead the bedroom, which was pretty full with three single beds and a tiny table with a small TV. The beds were comfortable and clean. The bathroom was clean if a little dated. We slept well and the next morning the staff organised a taxi pick-up for us to collect our hire car from the airport.
If the purpose of our stay was a relaxing holiday or a luxury getaway, I would have looked elsewhere. But if you just want somewhere decent, quiet and cheap Hotel Max fills the bill.
