Description: Unusualness of this place is proven by its history, which is connected with Gdansk so much, that still on the foreign tours itinerary, there is a stop on Szeroka Street with short story about the Gdansk vodka - Goldwasser. Dutch Mennonite Ambrosius Vermoolen, after he had been given the Gdansk citizenship, in year 1598 he launched the alcohol distillery, which he named "Der Lachs" - the salmon. Since then, this fish, being the symbol of happiness and prosperity, has signed all the products of this tasting room. "Goldwasser" became the most popular product made in his small factory. The dispensing of spicy vodka with swirling little pieces of 22-carats gold, had been kept in the strictest secrecy for ages, and told from generation to generation. The liquor, as a Gdansk brand article, was served on European courts. It was one of the favorites alcohols of Tsarina Catharine II. The historical chronicles in the following ages, mention the names of further generations - successors of the secret dispensing: Bestvater, Henrichsdorf, Marwitz and Wundichow. In the present time, the successor in law, and the possessor of the original dispensing is Graf von Hardenberg, the owner of Hardenberg-Wilthen AG liqueur factory in Germany. The Gdansk tasting room and restaurant "Pod Łososiem" had been famous for ages, as the place full of extreme collection of jewels, paintings and furniture. Unfortunately, the ravages of Second World War did not omit Szeroka Street. Tenement-house was destroyed during the blitz, but the collections survived. In 1976 the "Pod Łososiem" restaurant was re-opened. It has been being managed for over a quarter of a century The Robakowski's Family, who estimate the proper value of tradition of this place.

It is the entourage of the restaurant that gives it its charm. In the lobby you'll find pictures of times when world leaders came here to visit the city (and probably support the Solidarsjnos movement). It hasn't changed much. The kitchen makes good and tastefull old style polish dishes with a wide choice of game. The service did not change much either. It's stiff and rather cold. 10 years ago we ate here and at that time were taken with the whole atmosphere and good food. Now, some years later the excitement is tempered a bit and we started noticing little flaws. The pricey wine, the somewhat arrogant attitude of the waiters....still..for a once in a lifetime experience this is a great place to eat in Gdansk and get a whiff of Poland from the 80's.

This place is so extraordinary. I could not fault the food, atmosphere and service. My other half ordered shrimps wrapped in bacon for starter - WOW 3 large tiger prawns not shrimps - fantastic. The wine was rather on the pricey side but was worth it combined with that 'majestic' ambience. To think I could have sat where the pope or US President had sat!

We were a company of 10 persons, and we were all very impressed with food, service and atmosphere. You feel, you step into an old manor. This experience will stay with me for a long time.

Of course we had some expectations entering the restaurant which has an inviting interior. Decided to order Pork leg. Two persons ordered beer which came in porcelain mugs and gave us the impression that it had been taped one hour earlier. Not a good start. Got the wine menu. Wow! Rip of prices! Where told that it was only one red wine which was possible to order as “half bottle” so why did the “half bottle” arrive in a mug? Ordered still water. Two Eveian bottles where bought to the table opened in beforehand. So the question is:”How can we be sure that it really was genuine Eveian water? Yes it was water but quality water? We doubt it. We stayed at the Hanza Hotel and regretted that we didn’t have the dinner in the hotel restaurant which we have experienced serve quality dinners at a favourable prices.

Hi,
Thank you for your feedback on Tripadvisor!
Not exactly can we accept such blatant remarks !
Yes, opening water in the back by a waiter is a mistake. Such a situation in a restaurant of this class should not take place. For that I'm so sorry
Unfortunately the description of wine served in a “mug” - carafe is allowed by the sommelier - opened wine is aerated and therefore gains richer flavor.
Beer that you ordered is wheat beer there is no gas in it and can seem stale.
Regards

Nice food, charming interior, perfect service. A very nice dining experience of traditional polish food for reasonable prices. Make a reservation as it is very popular. Try the fish dishes !
