“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 15 May 2012

My wife and I stayed at this hotel from the 3/5/2012 to 8/5/2012 and it proved to be a perfect choice. The room was lovely with a great shower and a very comfortable bed. Even though it is a large hotel we found it to be quiet at night. The location is ideal for exploring the old part of the city and it is also close to a very good shopping centre. We made good use of the bar which had really good cocktails. A special mention to Danuta who provided us with great service.

Room Tip: Higher floors with a view of the old town

We stayed with my wife in Hotel Mercure for 6 nights in early May 2012. Honestly in the beginning I arrived alone, my wife came later.
Location of the hotel is it’s the biggest advantage over other hotels. It is situated very conveniently for business and pleasure visits to Gdańsk. In case you want to see Old City – it is only a several minutes walk. Tram, bus and train stations are even closer but not so close to main roads to disturb your rest in the room. Taxi parking is near the hotel, usually many taxi cars are waiting for customers.
The room we stayed looked very good. Locals told me that the hotel itself is not new, but seems like it was qualitatively renovated. There are rooms for smoking and non-smoking people. The building of hotel looks like a skyscraper in the city comparing to other building: it has 17 floors plus lobby. If you take a room on one of top floors and your window is facing Old City you will definitely enjoy view. Several spacious elevators run fast, usually you do not wait for an elevator to arrive.
Rooms and corridors are cleaned daily and cleaning quality is flawless. Staff on reception is welcoming and prompt, they speak English fluently. I also observed tourists from Germany spoke to receptionists without difficulties.
Breakfast is served between 6:30 and 10.00; variety of offered food is impressing. My favorites for breakfast were scrambled eggs with sausages, excellent cottage cheese and pancakes with jam. The only type of food I missed was hot porridge, however you can find different corn flakes and milk. Rooms are equipped with electric kettle for boiling water, tea and instant coffee bags. As I’m an addict to tea, this became very important. Also the hotel gives complimentary small bottle of mineral water. Mini-bar exists but I never opened it, that’s why I don’t have a clue what’s inside.
There is a safe in the room so spacious that my laptop fits fine there; the safe is free.
All guests can take advantage of free Wi-Fi, daily password is obtained on reception and works for 24 hours.
TV has arsenal of channels from many countries including “France 24” (French), “Euronews” (English) and “RTR Planeta” (Russian).
Unfortunately conditioning-heating system got broken in my room so that I felt chilling; hotel personnel reacted immediately, but since they were not able to fix the root cause they provided me with an electric heater. Thankfully it was even better than build-in heating system as the mobile heater was less noisy and more efficient.
If you arrive to Gdańsk by plane and so lucky to have a seat in plane near the window and flying to Gdańsk on sunny day, you should see entire panoramic view of the city including the hotel and two others “skyscrapers” located nearby.
There is a shuttle bus between airport and the hotel, about 15 zl. per person but it should be reserved in advance. Taxi will cost between 45 zl. and 100 zl. depending on day, time and taxi company. If you do not have local currency in your pocket – Zloty – you will be able to get them out of ATM found in airport right in front of taxi station. In spite in general taxi drivers did not speak English or spoke very little, neither my wife nor I had difficulties explaining taxi drivers where we would like to go especially if we explicitly knew address.
For cases when you need cash, there are lots of ATMs and bank offices besides the hotel, I discovered signs of almost all banks I could imagine. But bank cards are accepted everywhere with few exceptions.
Visit Madison Shopping Gallery which is across the street on the left. I would not call it a big shopping mall, but it is suitable for an unanticipated shopping. You will find cloths and underwear of famous brands, a supermarket on basement level full of food and even a few small cafés where you can dine. Personally we tried “Restauracja Sphinx” right above the entrance closest to the hotel.
But there are quite a lot of cafés and restaurants in Old City, I personally recommend finding a place to eat there. Usually it takes 10-20 minutes of walk to reach the desired place. There are several bakeries on the way to Old City, they are called “Piekarnia Cukiernia”. The good place to grab something sweet and drink a cup of tea. Visit “Restauracja Gdańska” on Świętego Ducha, 16 to feel entourage of Old City. Or make your impression on any other restaurant.
I presume you should pay a visit to Old City automatically since you stay in Mercure. Additionally if you have free time in Gdańsk, visiting Oliwa Park, Oliwa Cathedral and Zoo becomes mandatory. I had a chance returning from Oliwa Park to the hotel by tram – this adds more experience and impression as tram passes through a district with charming houses. Going to Oliwa Zoo by taxi cost me 46-48 zl. one way.
In short, we enjoyed staying in this hotel and if I had a chance visit Gdańsk next time I’ll definitely choose this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for room with view to Old City.

A good hotel with lovely staff and good services.
The room was quite small but the amenities were great. OK TV channels, nice bathroom, although the space between the sink and the toilet was tiny so I was practicing athletics to get close enough to the mirror to put make up on.
The beds were great, I wish I had one like that at home.
They changed our towels every day even though we didn't leave them on the floor: so the sign that tries to teach us about sustainability is rather counterproductive. The soap was also changed on a daily basis which I didn't find necessary.
The food in the restaurant was good and they have a good selection of wine and drinks at the bar.
Over, a good business-class hotel.

It is a very nice hotel: modern style, clean, located near the city center.
The area is not too nice, but it is only 500 m away from very nice historic areas.
People working there were very friendly.

It's a big building, maybe the biggest in Gdansk, although there are a few nearby skyscrapers which run it close. Obviously recently refurbished, and to a high standard. We were in room 1013 on the 10th floor, and had a lovely view over the city. The room was scrupulously clean and well furnished, with a mini bar and a safe. The bed was very comfortable and there was room on the bedside table for all necessary things (not always true in hotels). There were no noise problems and the shower was very powerful. The TV had a good selection of local and foreign channels, including BBC World News, CNN, and one of those financial channels with moving numbers that nobody understands. It's ideally positioned between the main railway station and the old town (Ulica Dluga about 10 minutes, maybe) and there's a modern shopping mall across the street. An airport bus (15 zloty each) stops right outside. We didn't eat in the hotel and breakfast was 50 zloty each: we found a cheaper option was Cafe Ferber on Ulica Dluga, although this didn't open until 9:30 and the mall (which has other possibilities) didn't open until 9: there's a McDonald's at the train station if you're desperate. Jolanta at reception went out of her way to be helpful, speaking excellent English and recommending restaurants and how to use the trains and trams. At under £50 per night for the room, we thought it excellent value.

Room Tip: I suppose the higher up you go, the better view you get! Floors 8-13 are non-smoking and there are s...

We always read reviews before booking a hotel, and have so far agreed with the review average ratings, after having visited the hotels.

This goes for the Mercure Hevelius Hotel too. Thanks to useful experience kindly shared by other reviewers, we found a very good hotel indeed :)

We stayed in room 1113 - on the 11th floor - with a nice view over the Główne Miasto ("Main town"). Główne Miasto is de facto the old town area, and the place tourists head for - just about 10 min walk from the hotel.

Taxi stand is 100 metres from the hotel. Airport coach stops just outside the hotel. The Manhattan shopping mall is 200 m from the hotel. Very few restaurants are found close to the hotel, but the hotel's own restaurant is very good indeed. Alternatively there are lots of restaurants in Główne Miasto.

Good: High standard :: Location :: Very friendly and helpful staff :: Room/bathroom :: A big hotel, with 17 floors or so, but still enough lifts :: Excellent value for money :: Very good restaurant/breakfast room :: Very tastefully furnished interior, throughout the hotel.

Bad: Nothing worth mentioning, really.

We stayed at the Mercure Hevelius for four nights, and will recommend this hotel (and Gdańsk) very much. We would definitely like to go back again!
