“OK, but no where near top notch”
Reviewed 25 July 2006

The Hanza Hotel is written up as one of if not the best hotel's along the Polish Baltic Coast. The hotel is fine, but it probably has not been at or near EXCELLENT status or 3 or 4 or 5 - star status for decades (if ever). The location is great, the hotel is so-so at best. The staff is "disninterested" as is mentioned in one guide book, the gym is "non-existent", and the carpet and bed coverings are as old as the "crane", and it is priced like the best hotel in Poland with none of the features. My suggestion is to look elsewhere.

The Hanza has an excellent location, close to the old area of Gdansk and on the waterfront beside the Maritime Museum. Our room was at the back, overlooking an ordinary (but quiet) street. The hotel is described as "luxurious" - to us it seemed to be of, say, 3 star standard, but maybe the suites are more special than the ordinary rooms. The room was clean, spacious, and everything worked. Powerful shower in the bathroom.

The main letdown was the appalling sound insulation between the rooms - we could hear every word from the adjoining rooms, and every splash in their bathrooms. There was quite a bit of noise from the corridor as well. Luckily our neighbours weren't too nocturnal, but it was still an annoyance.

Breakfast was a good buffet selection (cereals, cold meats and cheeses, bread, rolls, and (unspecified) hot food available to order). Overall, I don't think I'd be back, as I value a good night's sleep above everything else.

We stayed at the Hanza Hotel for one night at the end of June of this year. Excellent location right on the waterfront-minutes from the main tourist street in Gdansk. Excellent, clean rooms-we were upgraded to a suite for the price of a double room. Staff was courteous and professional, and helped with recommendations on food, sightseeing (although they did try to recommend the hotel's restaurant). Breakfast was the best we had in Poland, and we stayed in 4 different hotels througout north-Central Poland. A bit pricy, but you can't beat the location. Pod Lososiem, Gdansk's oldest restaurant, is just around the corner-excellent seafood and game entrees. Highly recommended. Will definately stay there again when we revisit.
