My friends and I were visiting Gdansk from San Francisco and absolutely loved our experience at Balsam! Another friend of ours who visited a few months prior from New York recommended this place to us, and it SERIOUSLY lived up to the expectations. The service all night was great- the guys were very attentive and happy to chat with us about everything and anything, from the history of Poland and Gdansk, to dating, to politics, to the latest and greatest in the celebrities' world! Drinks and beers were awesome, so were the quick bites we enjoyed throughout the night.

Oh, and did I mention it is probably the only place in Gdansk were the staff actually speaks perfect english, knows who Sublime is, keeps up with the Kardashians, knows how to mix a solid Dark and Stormy and will keep the party going all night long with you? Yeah, we are defineatly coming back- hands down THE best spot in Gdansk! Na zdrowie!

It's difficult to find cider in Poland and even a famous Somersby cider is in Poland is called apple beer drink(?). But in Balsam Café they have semi dry cider and it is served in carafe which only is the reason to pop in to Balsam Cafe. The café is very pleasant place with friendly service.

This place made our stay in Gdansk so much better. We had a group of 16 in our family, ranging from ages 16 through to 78 and this place was perfectly situated close to our hotel (Wolne Miasto). You will find two of the friendliest barmen in Poland - Martin and Irwen. Martin speaks better English than I do (he had a stay in California) and both made us feel so very welcome. The bar prices every night were very reasonable despite the rounds including just about every drink imaginable PLUS a few shots here and there on the house. It does not look much from the outside but inside the atmosphere is superb. We will be going back here the minute we return to Gdansk !

Most places in Gdansk seemed to me (admittedly I'm becoming an old fart) to have too loud a soundtrack. This place has music, but it's gentle and in the background. I didn't eat here, so can't vouch for the food, but the pilsner urquell is kept in fine condition and sold at 8zl the half-litre. A very nice place to hunker down with a beer and the papers or a book.

If the owner offers you a glass of 'something home made, based on sherry, mint and coriander', poured from an unlabelled stone bottle - it's not as bad as it looks; it is quite powerful though.
