“Great hotel, great location, great breakfast!”
Reviewed 13 May 2008

We had a brilliant stay in this hotel. Friendly staff, completely refurnished rooms, with great taste. The hotel is 4-5 minutes walk from Gdansk main attractions. I would definitly recommand this hotel for those staying in Gdansk.

Have just returned from an excellent stay in the Hotel Aureus. Do not be put off by the immediate surroundings - bear in mind Poland is still emerging from a communist state and these kind of major upheavals take a long long time. The hotel is immaculate and the staff are all helpful & friendly. With only a short walk to the main street & waterfront, i would definitely return again & again. Lovely fresh, clean bedrooms, bathroom & flat screen TV to boot. Breakfast very good also. Well Done to all the staff!

The hotel is 3*. I will tell you the pluses and the negatives so you can make up your own mind if this hotel is for you.
The location is in the Old Town - The negatives- very run down area. The positives - quiet and only a few minutes walk to centre.
The buildings the hotel are in have recently been refurbed. Therefore interior is new. Reception was bright, and staff very helpful offering advice if asked. The bar - what bar? Downstairs in the restaurant/breakfast room drinks were available. There were two stools to pull up to a serving counter. The were a limited selection of drinks available. Closing at 10pm. The staff serving here were always polite, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fair to good. Selection of teas or coffee, fruit drinks, pastries, cold meats, salads, cheeses, scrambled eggs, stir fry( which included bacon, sausages, peppers and onions) selection of bread rolls, jams, yogurt and cereals. Did not eat dinner here so unable to comment. We had a King sized room it was not big, and the bed was twin beds pushed together. I did query with reception just in case an error had been made but they checked and confirmed my room was correct, it was one of the larger rooms.
No extra pillows or blankets available in the room. No Tea/Coffee facilities. Limited toiletries. Shower but no bath. There was a safe that was free to use. A flat screen TV, a hairdryer and complimentary mineral water.
Overall opinion: a good clean 3* hotel. Dont be put off by the location, yes it is in a run down area but I felt very safe. It was only minutes walk to the centre/river walk. Take your own kettle to use in your room. All staff extremely helpful at all times.
Other reviews have mentioned that they thought the walls were thin as they could hear noise from adjoining rooms - when we stayed the hotel was full but I heard nothing. Should I return to Gdansk I would check out Hotel Hansa 4* just because of the location right on the waters edge (near the crane) but I would be quite happy to return to the Aureaus

Just retuned from Hotel Aureus, we stayed for three nights and thought the hotel was really great. Buffet breakfast included hot and cold and was plentiful. The biggest shower i have ever seen in a hotel. Although the walls werer a bit thin we could hear everyone returning to there rooms all thoughout the night. Reception staff were really helpful . An easy walk from the main station and really near to all of the sites. On both ends of the St there are small shops to buy localbeer and vodka.

This is excellent hotel. No doubts. I don't believe that it is 3* only. Its standard is 5* in my opinion.

I had superb room at the attic. Clean, large in modern style with huge bathroom.

Breakfast was absolutely fantastic. Full of delicious and fresh things.

Only think I don't like is location. It looks like in poorest place of Gdansk. Of course it is very close to Old Town, but I was little bit afraid to leave my car next to the hotel :) Luckily they have free guarded car park. (And free Internet connection in each room!!)

Staff were very helpful and well motivated. I had a terrible flu when I came in, so they gave me some precious advices.

Finally I would say that this is very good place to stay in. Especially in their reasonable prices. Enjoy! :)

This is one of the nicest hotels we have stayed at in in europe.

The rooms are first class for cleanliness, decor etc. The hotel staff were some of the most helpful i have ever come across, giving advice, maps, booking taxis etc.

The breakfast is first class compared to some of the hotels i have stayed in, offering sausage, egg, bacon, fresh bread cheese, yoghurt ,cakes ,pancakes and much more.

i was particulary impressed by the extensive use of wood flooring and exposed brickwork and the moderness of this hotel.

Yes, you can some times hear noise from your neighbours but i never really found it a problem......... don`t let it put you off.

The hotel is in a nice quiet location with minimal traffic noise and is ideally located for the main attractions. The hotel staff will happily oblige with a good map.

This is our third trip to poland in 18 months and it is still good value for money with no rip offs cons or suprises.

Taxis from the airport cost around £8.50.

We have just returned from a stay at the Aureus.

At the aiport the taxi driver hadn't heard of it!! (So make sure you have the address on you)
That worried us a bit at first but it is a new hotel so maybe understandable.

The hotel is in a strange position, almost a poorer residential area that is obviously ripe for redevelopment. However, turn right out of the hotel doorway, walk to the end of the road, turn left and you are almost on the riverfront.
We ate at 2 restaurants along there, Domichowski (sp?) and the Zawaw, both excellent and good value and the famous crane is along there too.

Checkin at the Aureus was great, absolutely superb helpful staff all the time we were there. An extra pillow was provided pronto and they provided maps and showed us where to walk to see the most.

The furnishing of the hotel was ultra modern and extremely tasteful. The whole ambience was excellent.

Our room was on the 3rd floor (305) facing the back. The lift was small but efficient.

Room was excellently furnished, plenty of draws & wardrobe space, beds were comfortable and warm. Flatscreen TV - note: no tea or coffee making facilities.

In the Aureus I have to say the walls are a bit thin, our room neighbours came in one evening and were holding a perfectly normal conversation in low voices and I could hear EVERY WORD - so be warned!!
That's a bit strange considering they are reclaimed brick.

Bathroom was superbly appointed and scrupulously clean, an excellent power shower with a LARGE cubicle! If I am being really picky I would say I prefer fluffy towels to waffle ones but that is about the worst criticism I can make! The waffle towels were adequate and did the required job anyway!

Breakfast was wonderful! The pancakes filled with cottage cheese were to die for and there was a terrific selection to suit all tastes: scrambled eggs, bacon, polish sausages (in vegetables!) a 'sunny side up' egg on toast, cereals, meats, cheese, fresh bread......
Coffee & juice...
SUPERB!

Gdansk is well worth a visit, it is being renovated at a rapid rate of knots and the main street 'The Royal Way; cannot be bettered anywhere in Europe in my opinion. It is FABULOUS, and needs to be strolled along by day and by night.
The whole of the city centre is awash with magnificent buildings and imposing churches and edifices and most of the centre has been restored to full glory.

I was glad we stayed at the Aureus as opposed to anywhere else, it was very central for everything.

One big bonus is that it was only a 10 minute walk to the massive 'Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers' and all the plaques and tributes to Lech Walesa and his comrades who had the immense bravery to form Solidarity and take on the might of the Soviet Union.
For those who remember that in 1980 onwards (like me) and who saw the news bulletins - and expected the leaders to be shot - it is an emotive place to be.
The Roads to Freedom exhibition is across the road.

We also went to Sopot on the train - which is very easy to do, everyone at the station speaks English and shows you what to do re punching the ticket, which platform etc and having asked someone if we were on the right train to Sopot, it was funny when the whole carriage called out "SOPOT" as we arrived there! :-)

There seems to be many flights to Gdansk from the UK now and in under 2 hours you are in another world.

It is COLD of course, but wrap up warm and the hotels, restaurants, trains etc are all well heated.

Finally, as an example of the attention to customer care, the hotel reception arranged us a taxi for 4am for an early flight and furthermore provided us with 2 packed breakfasts! (We had to drink the juice and eat the yoghourt before passing through airport security though!)

In conclusion I would say the Aureus is an excellent place to stay, clean & warm with friendly staff who speak excellent English.
I can recommend it without hesitation as a well located and comfortable place to stay when in this lovely city.
