“A wee bit noisy but otherwise excellent”
Reviewed 25 February 2009

Clean, modern hotel in characterful building on edge of Old Town. Staff very good, rooms modern, clean and well heated. Only slight niggle was our room on the 2nd floor was well away from reception but still noisy because the stairway was close by. Plenty of people clopping up and down the uncarpeted stairs at night !

We liked the location. It's not picturesque but it is only a short walk to the river and town.

We stayed here midweek in the middle of February -- not the best time to visit Gdansk, you may think, especially as we arrived just after a huge dump of snow, but it added greatly to the visual charm of the city. The hotel was warm and welcoming on a very cold night. We liked the room -- it was spacious, with a large, clean bathroom and a comfortable bed. But it was just above the reception area and we could hear every movement below us (so try to avoid room 104 if you can). The wooden floors in the hotel are attractive, but very noisy.

The breakfast buffet was fine -- probably the best scrambled eggs I've ever had in a buffet. They seemed to run out of items at 9 am on the first morning, but we had no problems the second morning. And they'll make you omelettes or boiled eggs if you ask. The coffee machine makes good cappucino, and you can have as much as you like or need. We didn't try the restaurant in the evening, although they were doing a 25 per cent off discount to try to attract customers.

The hotel is a little outside the centre, but only five minutes' walk from the river promenade and 10 minutes (on non-snow covered pavements!) to the main drag with all its restaurants and bars.

The taxi to and from the airport cost 45 zloty (about £10); we paid about £110 for B&B for the two nights, which we considered to be excellent value for money. Staff at the hotel were friendly and efficient.

I have just returned from a 3 night stay at this wonderful hotel. All the positive reviews sum up this great place. Our room was exceptionally clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were outstanding, full of choice and well presented. I have stayed at 5 * hotels and this breakfast out classes those of the 5 * I have recently stayed at. We also had an evening meal there oe night and that was also superb. There was an excellent choice and beautifully cooked and presented. All in all the hotel was excellent value for money and I will certainly return. I mist add here the hotel is close to the old town where the restaurants are also superb. We also tried the bar mentioned in one of the previous reviews which id a short walk from the hotel. My husband loved it ,especially the Ukrainian wheat beer and what a choice they had.The staff at the hotel were always freindly and accomodating. Thank you for a wonderful break.

I stayed two nights in aureus hotel with my fiance. I found the interior to be very clean and polished. The bedroom, although not huge was very clean and well decorated. My only problem with the room was the fact that i had asked for a double bedroom and instead found two singles beds. Also there were no extra pillows to be found in the room. The underfloor heating in the bathroom was a delight.
With regards to the location, it was excellent in that we where within about 5-8 minutes walk to all the main attractions, pubs and restaurants. I was a little concerned upon arriving at the hotel that the area seemed a little rough (with some run down buildings) but it is not at all so dont let first impressions put you off . Gdansk is all a little like that.
One of the best things about this hotel is the reception staff. We arrived in October and on our first day it rained constantly. Before leaving the hotel we asked the receptionist for directions to town. She was most helpful and gave us a map, directions and pointed out places of interest. She also asked us did we want umbrellas which i thought was exceptionally thoughful of her. We accepted with gratitude and boy did we use them! Throughout the course of our two night stay the receptionist also booked us taxis and was very attentive.
The breakfast was very continential in style which is not really to my taste but was nice if you like cold meat, cheese, eggs or pancakes in the morning.
Overall, i cannot fault the place.

Hotel Aureus is a lovely little hotel. Whether for business or pleasure, it seems to suit all needs. We were greated by an english speaking receptionist after a 50 zloty ride from the airport, although we used the meter on the way back, and it was only 37 zl.
We headed off straight into the old town of Gdansk. The Hotel is well situated, a nice 5 minute walk from the centre and right next door to the Post Office Museum. I would reccommend this hotel to anyone, as the room was wonderful. The breakfast was a little limited, but there was toast, scrambled eggs and Cereal, and a few other bits, but as a start to the day it was fine.

  • Liked — It just being out of the way of the centre, but not too far.
  • Disliked — The breakfast - Which wasnt bad, so for that to be the worst bit says something.

Wanted a nice hotel for a reasonable price and in a good location and thats exactly what i got. Booked it through staypoland and got a much better rate than that on the hotel's own website. It was £50 a night for a double room. The only other hotel in this price range and location seemed to be the Dom Muzyka (in the musical academy) but opted for this as it seemed to be slightly more central.

I definitely made the right choice as i actually ended up at the dom muzyka as thats the place to get the bus to Westerplatte (can't go directly from the centre). Was slightly further from the centre and over a big bridge.

As other previous reviews have mentioned the surroundings of the Aureus look a bit shabby and slightly run down (this is eastern europe though) but was only a couple of mins walk to the main centre and riverside. Felt perfectly safe walking back even in the dark.

Hotel it self was really clean and friendly and was a good spacious room. Looked very new. Breakfast was nice as well - plenty of choice on the buffet style. Modern safe in the room as well.

As well as being close to the main centre it was also close to the station (where the airport bus stops and train to sopot etc goes from).

If i ever go back to gdansk i will staying here.

This hotel is wonderful. When you arrive, the area may not appear to be the most attractive but it is very quiet and has the advantage of being about 10 minutes easy walk from the station and less than 10 from the old city, in fact I think that the location is one of the many good features of this hotel. The hotel staff speak English and are welcoming and very helpful. The rooms are superb; modern, well appointed and spotless with all that you need. Breakfast involves a huge choice to meet all tates and is really well presented. I stay in hotels most weeks of the year and this is one that really stands out, it has the quality, the service. the attention to detail and you know that it is very well managed. It was also great value for money and as a 3 star hotel far superior in quality to many 4 star hotels that I have stayed in. I have reccommended the Aureus already and will not hesitate to continue to do so, a real gem and a great find (thanks to previous Tripadvisor reviewers).

Gdansk by the way is a great city to visit with so much to see and do in the city itself and the surrounding area, certainly one of the best cities that I have visited and one to which I would like to return.

As a tip for anyone who likes good, proper beer, there is a great bar about 5 minutes walk away from the hotel, Degustatornia Dom Piwa on ul Grodzka. It is small, friendly, basic, with no music, no tv, just the sound of conversation and a great range of Polish and foreign beers. The sort of place that people of all ages go to for a drink and a chat . It is beer heaven, but beware of the strength of some Polish beers.

  • Liked — Quality, everything was done so well. Small and perfectly formed hotel.
  • Disliked — Can't fault it in any way
