Reviewed 23 June 2011

We saw this hotel last year when we used to pass by it, and as we couldn't get into Wanda again, we booked this. We'd booked a room with sea view and being shown into it up 54 tedious steps with no porterage for our bags, my wife went rather quiet. It was small, needed some TLC, and there were numerous rubber marks on the floor where the carpet had been inexpertly removed. I saw the manageress and she gave us another room, which by comparison was absolutely palatial, with a separate bedroom, shower/WC and a huge lounge which had enough armchairs, settees and what-not to host a large cocktail party! My wife was delighted, as was I when we got it for the same price.
If you've seen the film 'The Shining' you'll have some idea of what Zatoka is like inside: high-ceilinged rooms, dark wooden panelling everywhere, heavy wooden furniture, dim lighting. Breakfast is standard continental fare, with something of everything and plenty of it. The staff are very helpful, but I should say that in the whole 10 days the room was not cleaned once, the towels were only changed twice and the bedding was not changed or made up at all, although curiously when I reported a light had blown in the bathroom it was changed the next day. The hotel regularly hosted large wedding receptions and conferences while we were there, and as these are held away from the rooms they were only obvious when we came or went, otherwise we wouldn't have know they were on.
One of the hotel's main advantages is that it is right next to the renowned Bar Przystan, Poland's best fish restaurant, and is about 150 yards from the beach. Sopot centre is about 20 minutes stroll along the beach path.
We paid in the end 2500 Zloty for 10 days B&B, which can't be quibbled at, but although the hotel has been taken over by Gdansk Polytechnic, it still has some way to go before it reaches the standard of Wanda up the road.

Room Tip: If you don't like the room, say so
