Really very good and relaxing staying at the Alef Hotel, where we spent 6 days from the 17th May to the 23rd May. Rooms very clean and silent. An elegant breakfast room with an open air terrace. Breakfast very abundant and rich with lots of sweet things and delicious Polish egg salades to choose. Excellent position, close to the Wavel Castle, 5 minutes on foot to arrive to the main market square and city centre. Autobus stops just outside the Hotel. 24hour supermarket around the corner and a nice post office in front of the Hotel. All the staff (reception, waiters and cleaning service girl) is very kind, available and efficient! So, everyone should choose the Hotel Alef to stay in Krakow! Greetings from Italy!

Room Tip: You can choose larger or smaller rooms when you book, with some discounts.

We couldn't have had a more pleasant experience then spending twelve straight nights at the Alef-I guess that's more time than usual to stay in one city, but we decided to have a central spoke and wheel philosophy rather than have to schlep every day to a new place and have to carry all your stuff plus your gifts and check in every couple of days to a new city. We just hung out in Krakow, trained off for day trips to our encestral villages and surrounding concentration camps and then came back at night. For a very reasonable sum by American standards certainly we got a small apartment with two bathrooms in a perfect location, half way between the Jewish Quarter and the Town Square. Street Cars made getting around very simple and no one seemed to care if we couldn't figure out how to pay. We wrapped it all up with a visit to the old Communist session now Ronald Reagan Platz! You can't beat that.

The only thing this hotel has going for it is that the location is perfect to do all the tourist things. 7mins walk to the Jewish Quarter and night venues, 10mins walk to the Old Town and Wawel Castle. The hotel itself though is absolute rubbish, barely a 2 star but charges like a high 3 star. The bedding is terrible, sheets, covers, pillows etc dirty, unwashed & marked with all sorts of questionable soilings. Breakfast is better missed as the coffee tastes like muddy water and the food is very basic. The cereal is a cheap brand that tastes like cardboard and although they advertise dinner, nobody goes there so in fact they don't do dinner or lunch at all. The staff try to be very helpful though so that's a good point. The hotel is very run down with a 1980s small TV on top of the wardrobe (you can only watch it laying down as it's very close to the ceiling) and most channels don't work.

Room Tip: There are no good rooms, so best of luck!

We booked the hotel for 3 nights and if it was not for our booking policy, which meant no free cancellation, we would have left immediately. (Lesson learnt and next time we will go for the free cancelation option even if it means more money). We were given a tiny room with a sloped ceiling on the top floor where we could not stand up without bumping our heads. There were wires hanging off the door handle and a wall light did not have a cover (see photos). The window blind was dirty and there was no floor towel in the bathroom. We were also not given hand towels. The room certainly had a feel of a cheap hostel room despite the cost of 243zl per night, which is about £50. After complaints, we were given a choice of a different room next day, but we felt that our complaints should have been addressed immediately especially as the hotel charges for the first night on arrival leaving you with no choice, but to stay in. Our second room was still on a small side, however felt more spacious due to high ceilings. The room was cleaner and had a more of a "hotel feel" than the poky room upstairs, with clean curtains and colour co-ordinated cushions and bed throws. We were also given hand and bathroom floor towels, unfortunately they were tatty with stains on. A 3***hotel certainly demands higher standards than that.

The breakfast was basic, with a choice of brown and white bread, cheese and ham with an option of scramble of fried eggs cooked to order.

As for the positives- apart from the bedroom on the top floor, the hotel is in a quiet, but good location, close to main square, Wawel Castle and Kazimierz.

We would not stay in this hotel again, as there are other 3*** hotels in the city with a higher standard and similar price, but if you decide to stay at Hotel Alef, make sure you are not accommodated on the top floor unless you are given a hefty discount!

Room Tip: Not on the top floor!

The location of this hotel is perfect - 5mins walk to the Jewish Quarter, 7mins walk to the Old Town & Wawel Castle, 30mins walk to the modern centre & railway/bus station or take many trams that all get there within 10mins. There is a 24hr supermarket across the road. However, this hotel is only 1 step up from a hostel. The bedding, towels etc are like a hostel, the breakfast provided is terrible (don't drink the coffee or eat cereal/muesli). Mostly things don't work in your room - lights, bathroom plumbing, etc. Some staff are hospitable, others are unfriendly so you need to pick your staff. Although a restaurant is advertised on the premises, there are no people coming here to eat so it's never open. It's a very run down hotel that shouldn't be rated more than 2 stars.

Room Tip: There are no good rooms in this place - all are old, very small & not value for money.

This hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the main square and also has a tram line nearby. it's a great base to explore the city. While it's not in the main square, this also means that you don't get the late night noise that can be created in some other parts of the city. The hotel has young and genuinely friendly and helpful staff with very good english. The public areas of the hotel look well and are interestingly decorated. By contrast the bedrooms are a bit of a let down. They look and feel run down. New beds, curtains and carpets are badly needed. No AC in the rooms as far as I could see so that could be a problem in the height of summer. Despite these negatives I did sleep well. The hotel has free wifi. Breakfast is fairly basic and a bit boring. However, there is plenty to see in the breakfast room which has a curious collection of objects, wall art and furniture. Because of the tired bedrooms I could not recommend the hotel at present. I have stayed in similarly priced hotels in Poland which were better value for money.

With only 15 € per person my friends and I we treated like gentlemen.
We ate and drank well, the quality of food was very good and great service.
Atmosphere very cozy, elegant decor and classical music in the background.
