No visit to Krakow is complete without a stroll around the district topped of by a beer at the Singer Bar

The Jewish district is a awesome place if you want to go back to the 1940s in the nazi era , the buildings are old and you can almost think you are in Russia , if you are covered in tattoos like myself don't expect anyone to talk to you though as they are a bit reserved

Spent 1 night in the Jewish District when we went to visit Auschwitz. We stayed in the Klezmer Hois Hotel which was very nice. The Jewish District itself is very small, and it is difficult to really understand what Jewish life was like in the area prior to WWII. We visited both the "Old" and "New" Cemeteries. Unfortunately the "New Cemetery" is quite unkempt, with overgrown grasses and weeds everywhere. Seems very disrespectful to those buried there. The "Old" Cemetery has a small admission fee since it is attached to a still functioning synagogue and was clearly tended. The synagogues were also interesting to visit, but we found no one to chat with who could tell us about current observances. Overall we found the area interesting, but not very informative regarding what life was like in that area with a thriving Jewish population. The restaurants were not very good, food was mediocre with a "forced" ambiance of a time gone by. I would definitely recommend a visit, but do your dining elsewhere.

One of the highlights of the area was a chance visit to the Jewish Community Center of Krakow which was a breath of fresh air - very interesting to meet and chat with the younger generation of the Jewish Community, born after the war.

This was where the Jewish Ghetto started and the main square was used in Schindlers list when the Jews registered. On the edge of the square is the Polish Folk Museum with costumes from all regions of Poland, amongst other exhibits. Dig a bit deeper and the restaurants are well worth the visit.
