Having read many great reviews for this restaurant, I looked forward to spending a pleasant evening here. How disappointed I was, to actually eat here.

We walked into the restaurant at 7.45, which we did not feel was a late and last minute dinner. On choosing our meals, 2 of us were told our choices were unavailable and that we needed to choose something else. The bottle of wine we chose, was also unavailable and when we changed our option, in light of this, no bottle on the wine list was actually available to be purchased.

The food was reminiscent of school days, with mashed potato being served by ice cream scoop and the food whilst looking totally unappetising also tasted as bad. We did not feel in the least bit inclined to order a dessert.

Where to start.... well don't be mislead by the full menu. When we came to order, a number of dishes were off the menu - we should have guessed. Despite the waitresses best efforts, both the wine and the food was quiet honestly dreadful. None of the dishes lived up to their billing - when you get mashed potato served with an ice cream scoop you know the food is to say the least basic. Two of the three meal were very poor indeed and the only edible one tuned out to be a rolled chicken Kiev! All in all a dreadful time had by all and 2 hours of our lives we cannot claim back

Lovely restaurant - very authentic feeling. Prices are very low, including for drinks. Portions a little small but great for the price anyway, so sides can be added without it becoming expensive...

Do have the beef with michliwski sauce - really tasty dish; don't have the chicken with fruit sauce (the fruit is canned)...!!

The service is excellent!!

In early October I was on a hunt for a good place for some potato pancakes and goulash. Just looking in windows when I saw this place. Poked my head in and spoke with a pretty girl at the little bar who spoke English. I saw what I wanted. And a couple hours later I was back to have dinner. Was a wonderful meal and a good beer. Very nice place and the staff were kind.

I plan to ear hear again when next in Krakow and would recommend to all who like good Polish food. Sometimes you just have to walk a couple blocks off the main tourist routes to find the good places.

Give it a try.

My wife and I have visited Krakow nine times over the years, and once we discovered Restauracja Cechowa, we never failed to return to it. The first time we saw it, we weren’t sure if we really wanted to enter the premises. The country was still under Soviet domination, and we didn’t feel at ease. But we thought, “We want to try traditional old Polish cuisine, and this place looks as old Polish as it could get. Why not? If we don’t like what we see, we can always walk out.” In we went, and from that point on we always made it a point to return to it time and time again when we wanted authentic Polish food. Over the years we saw gradual changes: from a menu entirely written in Polish to a menu with English translation, from no credit cards accepted to acceptance of major cards, from no knowledge of English language by servers to gradual increase of understanding (although still slight).

The menu is extensive, the food is well prepared, the prices are ridiculously low, and the servers can’t do enough to please (all they need from a guest is a pleasant smile). An example of how accommodating our server was on this last rip is her making it her mission to save their wonderful mushroom soup for our next visit the following evening since they had run out of it when we arrived. Sure enough, when we returned, here was our server with a big smile and a greeting, “have mushroom soup, have mushroom soup.” By the end of our 6-day stay in Krakow, the server (Barbara) and my wife became “kissing cousins." If you like garlic, be sure to order their fried chicken. You like pierogi? They have them; I liked the potato filled Russian pierogi. And of course, to help you “wash down” these hearty dishes, they offer a selection of local and imported beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages. By the time you get to the desserts, you are to full try them, but they sure do look good.

The restaurant could be easy to miss because it is on side street, but it is a short walking distance from the Old Town Square, around the corner from Trattoria Soprano (a good Italian restaurant), and slightly up the street from Collegium Maius (Jagiellonian University) on Jagiellonska Street. The restaurant is not only frequented by average Krakovian residents, but also by university students, professors, lecturers, and visitors from other Polish cities. You will not see too many foreign tourists, although we have seen an increase over the years. In short, if you like traditional Polish food in a traditional Polish restaurant, try Restauracja Cechowa.
