“Good hotel; very helpful staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2011

I recently completed a very pleasant stay at the Mercure Panorama. The hotel is very well situated, with major tram/bus lines within 50 meters and a short 5 minute walk to the lively market square. It is also convenient to the train station (direct bus, 15-minute walk or short taxi ride).

The staff were all very friendly and spoke perfect English. When the desk receptionist learned that I had an early morning train, she offered to check me out and settle the bill the night before in order to save time. Not only that, I got a second wake-up call (without needing to ask for it) just in case I had gone back to sleep after the first one. Internet service was both free and trouble-free.

The restaurant service was also very good, and the food was excellent. I sampled Źurek (a Polish sourdough-rye soup) several places, but theirs was by far the best. I also had an excellent bacon-wrapped pork loin. (Note: Polish food is inconsistent with any weight-loss diet.)

The room was spacious and the towels & linens were new and of good quality. It would have been nice to have an option to have the sheets changed, but for a three-night stay it was not too bad. One housekeeping 'nit': I used both towels the first day and was rewarded by having only a single set from then on.

One negative was that the doors did not have a peep-hole, so I had to actually open to see who was knocking (or in some cases, who was knocking at the door of the next room). Combined with an overly persistent housekeeper on Sunday morning, this was less than optimal.

This was neither my first nor last visit to Wrocław, and when I return the Mercure will be my hotel of choice.

I can really only echo what others have said. This is great base for a short stay in the city. We took the public bus from the airport which terminates near the railway station. From there it's a 10-15min walk to the hotel in pretty much a straight line. We arrived slightly early and were allowed to check in without any problems. Pieter at reception was exceptionally helpful, meeting our room requests and not only giving us a map but also pointing out the main sights of the city and how to get there.

The main square and other old town sights are indeed within walking distance but if you want to go further out of town to the zoo or musical fountains for example, the tram stop is right outside the hotel. When the new airport terminal opens in due course it looks like the tram will take you straight to the door. Shopping centre with supermarket is joined to the hotel. What more could you want from a city break base?

We loved the city - a few tips - if you like the bronze gnomes scattered throughout the city, buy a (red) map at the tourist office in the main square, showing the locations of the main ones. Gnome hunting becomes quite addictive (don't forget the one at the benches outside the airport terminal!) The white "gnome guide" (also available for a small cost at the TIC) is humorously written and gives "the true stories" of some of the main gnomes. Another must is the musical fountains - especially the "special" shows on Fridays and Saturdays. High quality performance and completely free.

Room Tip: High floor facing the church is best for quietness

Very clean hotel with a perfect location - 5 minute walk to the old town and to the Panorama. It's also right next to a mall - perfect for shopping.

The Mercure Panorama is indeed located within an easy walk of the famous Wroclaw "Panorma", a painterly recreation of a late 18th-century battle in which the Polish forces were victorious. The Panorma is an absolute must! But the location at the edge of the pedestrian zone also means that you can reach the main square (Rynek) within 10 minutes--and from there explore the entire historical downtown area.

The hotel staff is extremely friendly and helpful and provided us with 2 valuable tips: (1) to leave our car in one of the few stalls right in front (which elsewhere would be designated for loading/unloading, but not there), thus saving us at least US $ 50.00 for 3 days in the attached parking garage, and (2) how to bypass the free W-LAN access to my American ".edu" address that the server blocked. (Free internet access is also available in each room with the help of a USB cable that the hotel provides).

The rooms are perfectly decent, clean, bathrooms are fine--overall we found the Mercure Panorama an excellent place to stay in a 3-star category (which I would gladly up to 3 star superior, especially in view of the great buffet breakfast each morning ...).

And, by the way, Wroclaw is in the midst of last-minute renovations and constructions as the city will be a Cultural Heritage City next year ... . Until spring of 2012 this will mean traffic detours and closed sites (such as Centennial Hall, which may re-open late this fall)--but even with all this the city is well worth a trip.

An absolute must is a one-hour (plus) drive (some 40 miles) to the former Silesian town of Schweidnitz/Swidnica, where a "Peace Church" was built for Protestants in the 1650's, one of the 3 such churches that the Hapsburg rulers had to concede following the re-Catholization of Silesia at the end of the Thirty Years' War. A timber-frame structure sporting 4 (!) balconies, thus accommodating 7500 parishioners, is a true marvel--and justly deserves inclusion as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (There is train service if no car is available).

Room Tip: Ask for a room the upper floors, possibly with a view (of the Dominican church opposite)

Rooms were very clean and spacious. Hotel in good location and walking distance to most major attractions in Wroclaw. Parking/drop off difficult as limited space in front of hotel to stop. Had to drive around a few times in order to stop to check in. Conveniently located next to a shopping centre and parking. Staff were very helpful in ensuring we had everything we needed for our 15mth baby.

Central position easy walking to the old town. The staff were helpful in booking me a taxi for a long distance journey and the restaurant staff almost too attentive in whisking away my food as I went for a coffee.
